Now that we have the SEA Games in the rear view mirror (congrats, Philippines) we can start looking forward to next big thing in ASEAN Basketball: The ASEAN Basketball League!
While nothing is officially set in stone, we think it’s safe to say that there be some new (and old?) faces this upcoming season.
I’ll be honest, I had no knowledge whatsoever about the basketball scene in Hong Kong. In retrospect, maybe I should have paid more attention.
The offseason made it look like a promising season for the Saigon Heat. They resigned Lenny Daniel, David Arnold, and Stefan Nguyen. They snapped Chris Charles. They got an exciting athletic wing in Joshua Munzon. They had a load of well-performing locals in the VBA to choose from. This was supposed to be championship-contending season. Which makes their three-game losing streak to start the season a bit surprising.
A weird start it has been for the defending champions of the ABL, but it’s only been two games. Hard to judge a team after only two games.
I had my doubts on the Singapore Slingers before the start of last season in 2015. I had my doubts on the Singapore Slingers before the start of this season in 2016. After their first six games of the season, I have learned that I should never doubt the Singapore Slingers.
It’s been far from an ideal start for the Kaohsiung Truth and they are hoping that a change of calendar will also mean a change of fate for the team in the remaining 17 games.
