The twists and turns of the FIBA Asia Champions Cup 2019 continues heading up to the tournament which will be held this September 24-29. Most recently, Lebanese champions Al-Riyadi will be replacing PBA Commissioner’s Cup champions San Miguel Beermen in the Final 8 of the competition.

The FIBA Asia Champions Cup had previously mentioned that the Final 8 will have 4 spots reserved for the champions of the leagues from China (CBA), Korea (KBL), Japan (B.League), and Philippines (PBA). The 3 champions of the former 3 leagues have confirmed their participation in Guangdong Southern Tigers (China), Ulsan Mobis (Korea), and Alvark Tokyo (Japan).
The situation was a bit trickier in the Philippines as the league is actually an ongoing of 3 conferences. It was eventually believed that the winners of the Commissioner’s Cup would get the slot to the FIBA Asia Champions Cup due to the timing of the event and the regulation concerning foreign players.
The San Miguel Beermen ended up winning the Commissioner’s Cup beating out TNT Katropa, 4-2, earning the spot to the FIBA Asia Champions Cup 2019.
However, the PBA later announced that it would instead be the Meralco Bolts who would represent the Philippines in the FIBA Asia Champions Cup even with other reports that Renaldo Balkman was also signed to reinforce the team along with Allen Durham.
The speculation is that the San Miguel Beermen would be missing out on the service of several key players like Chriss Ross and Christian Standhardinger at the FIBA Asia Champions Cup due to the ruling of player eligibility at the competition, possibly leading to the champions not being interested to play.
Also in consideration might be the fact that the San Miguel Beermen are under the SMB corporation, rivals to Manny Velez Pangilinan’s (MVP) group who is funding both the national federation (SBP) and 3 teams in the PBA; TNT Katropa, Meralco Bolts, and NLEX Road Warriors.
It is possible that the Philippines federation (SBP) lost their automatic spot to play in the FIBA Asia Champions Cup since they could not deliver to send a “PBA Champion” as agreed, eventually replaced by Lebanese champions Al Riyadi instead.
The teams currently confirmed for the FIBA Asia Champions Cup 2019 are Guangdong Southern Tigers (China), Ulsan Mobis (Korea), Alvark Tokyo (Japan), Hitech Bangkok City (Thailand), Fubon Braves (Chinese Taipei), Al-Riyadi (Lebanon), AL Muharraq (Bahrain), and Palayesh Naft Abadan (Iran).

ก่อนหน้านี้ สำหรับรายการ FIBA Asia Champions Cup ได้มีการกำหนดทีมวาง 4 ทีมจากแชมป์ลีก 4 ประเทศคือ จีน (แชมป์ CBA), เกาหลี (แชมป์ KBL), ญี่ปุ่น (แชมป์ B.League), และ ฟิลิปปินส์ (แชมป์ PBA) ซึ่งแชมป์ของ 3 ลีกแรกที่กล่าวถึง ไม่มีปัญหาจัดกันมาตามที่คว้าแชมป์กันมาได้ คือทีม Guangdong Southern Tigers (จีน), Ulsan Mobis (เกาหลี), และ Alvark Tokyo (ญี่ปุ่น)
ในส่วนของฟิลิปปินส์มีความยุ่งยากมากกว่าลีกอื่นหน่อย เพราะเป็นลีกที่แบ่งออกแข่งขันกันตลอดปี มี 3 ถ้วย หรือ Conference จึงมีความวุ่นวายว่าจะเจาะจงแชมป์ของถ้วยไหนดี เพื่อให้ได้โควต้าอัตโนมัติมาแข่ง Asia Champions Cup และด้วยจังหวะเวลา บวกกับ กฏผู้เล่นต่างชาติ จึงได้ตัดสินใจเป็นการเอาแชมป์ Commissioner’s Cup ไป ซึ่งอนุญาติให้มันตัวผู้เล่นต่างชาติได้ 1 คน โดยมีการจำกัดความสูง
ทีนี้ ทีมที่ได้แชมป์กลายเป็นทีม San Miguel Beermen โดยเอาชนะ TNT Katropa มาได้ 4-2 เกม จึงได้สิทธิในการเล่น FIBA Asia Champions Cup ไป!!!
แต่… กลายเป็นว่า อยู่ๆ ทางลีก PBA ออกมาแจ้งว่า ทีมที่จะไปแข่งรายการนี้ เป็นทีม Meralco Bolts แทน ซึ่งอาจจะเป็นทีมที่มีผลงานเนืองๆ ดีๆ มาเรื่อยๆ บ้าง แต่ก็ไม่ใช่ทีมที่ได้แชมป์มา หรือ แม้แต่เข้ารอบชิงมาด้วยซ้ำ ยังมีประกาศไปแล้วด้วยซ้ำว่า Meralco Bolts ได้เซ็นตกลงว่าจะเอา Renaldo Balkman มาเสริมทัพเพื่อแข่งรายการนี้อีกด้วย
จากการคาดการณ์ คือ ทีม San Miguel Beermen คงไม่อยากเข้าร่วมแข่ง เพราะ เงื่อนไขของตัวผู้เล่น ที่ใช้ตามกฏ FIBA จะทำให้ไม่สามารถใช้งานผู้เล่นหลักๆ ได้หลายคน ทั้ง Chriss Ross หรือ Christian Standhardinger อีกทั้ง Beermen ก็ไม่ค่อยกินเส้นกับ องค์กรของ Manny Velez Pangilinan (MVP) ที่หนุน SBP (สมาคมบาสเกตบอลฟิลิปปินส์) และ 3 ทีมใน PBA อยู่ คือ TNT Katropa, Meralco Bolts, และ NLEX Road Warriors จึงอาจจะปฏิเสธการเข้าร่วมไป
อาจจะเป็นเพราะ การส่งทีม Meralco Bolts ไม่ตรงตามเงื่อนไขที่ SBP ต้องส่งแชมป์ Commissioner’s Cup มาร่วมแข่ง ทำให้เสียตำแหน่งใน FIBA Asia Champions Cup 2019 ไป และกลายเป็นทีมแชมป์จาก Lebanon คือ Al-Riyadi ที่เข้ามาแทน
