eLet’s talk about Andrej Urlep, Mono Vampire Basketball Club’s new head coach for the upcoming ASEAN Basketball League season.

The team sneakily announced the signing of the head coach right in the middle of TPBL playoff contention, even though Urlep will only be watching on and preparing for the ABL season. It was also announced in the caption of the video post that Urlep will be making his coaching debut at the SAT-Srisaket World Basketball Invitation.
This is also a reminder that the current coach of the Mono Warriors squad playing in the TPBL is Coach Tongkiate Singhasenee who took over the coaching position during the ABL Playoffs following the parting between the team and ex-head coach Douglas Marty.
WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT COACH DREJ
Yes, I am calling him Coach Drej because it’s pronounced as An-DRAY and Coach Drej is way cooler than Coach Andrej. This is an undeniable fact. This is an obvious set up for his eventual first win with the club which will be headlined as “Beat by Drej”.
The Slovenian head coach will bring a vast amount of experience to the Thai club with having coached at a high level for more than 20 years. He coached the Slovenian national team at Eurobasket 1997, barking at guys like Spurs favorite Rasho Nesterovic and current Slovenian NT head coach Radovan Trifunovic.
10 years later, Coach Drej would coach at Eurobasket once again in 2007. However, this time he would be coaching the Polish national team and would even go up against Slovenia in the first round.
Though Urlep went 0-6 in both competitions, being named the head coach of two national teams at a major event like Eurobasket should speak for itself on how respect he is in those basketball circles.
THERE’S GOT TO BE MORE THAN THAT RIGHT?
Well, Coach Drej didn’t just get plucked out of thin air to coach the Polish national team. After his stint as Slovenia’s head coach, Urlep embarked on a legendary journey with Śląsk Wrocław (10 TK points for whoever can teach me how to pronounce that because I’m too lazy to Google it).
The Polish club marks the time under Urlep’s reign as the “Great Śląsk Era” in which they won 5 straight titles from 1998-2002, with only the 1999-2000 season without their legendary coach. Coach Drej didn’t stop there, going on to win another title with KK Włocławek in the 2002-2003 season.
So it’s pretty easy to see why the Polish national federation eventually reached out and got Coach Drej to lead their national team in 2007.
DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING MORE RECENT ON HIM THOUGH?
After jumping around in the Polish PLK, Urlep finally left for the Lithuanian LKL in 2014. He made his return to Poland in the middle of the 2017-2018 season, to coach Stelmet Enea BC Zielona Góra who were coming off 3 straight PLK titles.
Despite Stelmet’s success in the local league, they were struggling in the Basketball Champions League (BCL) before Urlep arrived. The Polish champions were sitting at the bottom of their group with a 2-7 record and heading into the Christmas break on a 5-game losing streak.
Coach Drej became their Santa Claus.

The club signed Urlep on December 22, 2017 and from there on Stelmet blasted off to a 4-game winning streak. It started with a win over the group’s top team, Besiktas Sompo Japan, and landed them the last qualifying spot to the Round of 16 which they had missed out on the prior season.
Pundits lauded on how he had turned the team around, crediting his coaching style that upgraded the defense and put the offense in motion. Many pointed out his unpopular yet smart move to make an offensive star like Thomas Kelati come off the bench instead of starting games.
SO HOW DID MONO LAND COACH DREJ IF HE WAS SO AWESOME?
The magic didn’t last.

Dropping out of the Round of 16 against a strong AS Monaco team wasn’t the end of the world and neither was losing in the PLK Semi-finals to KK Włocławek in 5 games. The last straw was a 117-95 lost in the battle for 3rd place, Stelmet’s largest home loss ever. Coach Drej was visibly angry at the post-game press conference said that their 4th quarter breakdown was something that wouldn’t even happen with elementary school kids (rough google translation).
The day after the game, Coach Drej informed the team that he would quit before the second game of the series.
While some in Stelmet looked at Urlep’s move as escaping from a sinking ship, club President Janusz Jasinski said that it was an honorable act for the coach to take the blame all upon himself.
HOW SHOULD MONO FANS FEEL?
Relieved.
The coaching situation for the ABL team was in limbo ever since the swift transition during the middle of the Playoffs last year. While it was rumored that team management were on the hunt for a foreign coach, the season inched closer and closer without a hint even after locking up their three import players for the season.
Now there is a face to put on to that leadership position.
Coach Drej obviously brings a lot of success and experience and the fans in the European basketball circles have mentioned how well he does even with low budget teams.
Now with a team that has one of the higher budgets in the region, it’ll be interesting to see how things work out.
Coach Drej also has a reputation of being “a strict and demanding” leader, which should work well in getting most out of the local Thai players. The question is how demanding and strict will he be? How will it be accepted by the players on the team? It was rumored that there was quite some tension between the players and Coach Drej at Stelmet towards the end, but what were the reasons behind that fallout?
Whatever the case, Mono finally gets their head coach and a really good one, too. And if at any time you can get a head coach who was on the winning end of a historic shot like this one from back in the 1998-1999 PLK season… it can’t turn out to be that bad of an idea.

ใช่ ตอนนี้เราถือวิสาสะในการตั้งชื่อเล่นให้โค้ชอันเดร เออร์แล็ป ไปเลยว่า โค้ช “เดร” เพราะมันเท่ดี แค่นั้น จบนะ
ผู้ฝึกสอนชาวสโลเวเนีย คนนี้ มีประสบการณ์การเป็นโค้ชมามากกว่า 20 ปี และ เป็นถึงระดับโค้ชทีมชาติมาแล้ว!!! เน้นๆ ก็เป็นโค้ชทีมชาติสโลเวเนียนี่แหละ ในรายการแข่งขัน Eurobasket 1997 ซึ่งก็ได้เป็นโค้ชของผู้เล่นอย่าง ราโช เนสเตโรวิช ผู้เล่นขวัญใจชาวซาน อันโตนีโอ สเปอร์ส สมัยนั้น และ ราโดวาน ทริฟูดนวิช โค้ชทีมชาติสดลเวเนีย คนปัจจุบัน
… แสดงให้เห็นเลยว่า โค้ชปู่เดรย์ ผ่านมาเยอะจริงๆ
อีกสิบปีต่อมา โค้ชเดร ก็ได้มีโอกาสคุมทีมชาติอีกครั้ง ในงาน Eurobasket อีกนี่แหละ แต่คราวนี้ในปี 2007 กลายเป็นการคุมทีมชาติโปแลนด์แทนวะงั้น โดยได้เจอกับทีมชาติสโลเวเนียอีกด้วย!

ก็แหงล่ะ ใช่ว่าสมาคมบาสฯ โปแลนด์ จะไปคว้าตัวเองโค้ชเดร มาจากที่ไหนก็ไม่รู้เอามาคุมทีมชาติชุดใหญ่อย่างทันทีทันใด
หลังจากที่เขาคุมทีมชาติสโลเวเนียชุดใหญ่เสร็จไปได้ไม่นาน เออร์แล็ป ได้ไปเป็นโค้ชทีม Śląsk Wrocław ในลีกโปแลนด์ (ใครอ่านชื่อทีมออกได้ มาบอกผมที) ซึ่งทีม Śląsk Wrocław ภายใต้โค้ชเดร ก็สามารถคว้าแชมป์ไปได้ 5 ปีติดต่อกันตั้งแต่ปี 1998-2002 (ซึ่งมีเพียงปี 1990-2000 ที่โค้ชเดรไม่ได้คุม) และช่วงเวลาอันรุ่งโรจน์ช่วงนี้ ได้ถูกขนานนามไว้ว่าเป็น “Great Śląsk Era”

Stelmet ได้ตกลงเอา โค้ชเดร มาคุมทีมในวันที่ 22 ธันวาคมปี 2017 และทันทีต่อจากนั้น ทีม Stelmet ก็เอาชนะไป 4 เกมติดกัน เริ่มด้วยการคว่ำเอาชนะทีมหัวตารางอย่าง Besiktas Sompo Japan ซึ่งผลงานช่วงท้ายนี้ ทำให้พวกเขาสามารถทะลุเข้าสู่รอบ 16 ทีมสุดท้ายไปได้ หลังจากที่พลาดมาในซีซั่นที่ผ่านมา

อย่างน้อยก็คือ ตอนนี้มีการตอบโจทย์เรื่องโค้ชของทีมได้อย่างเป็นทางการแล้ว หลังจากที่สถานการณ์ค่อนข้างไม่แน่ไม่นอนมาตั้งแต่ช่วงต้นปี มีข่าวลือมาตลอดว่าทางชุดผู้บริหารทีมจะมีการตามหาโค้ชชาวต่างชาติเข้ามาคุม แต่ยิ่งใกล้เริ่มต้นซีซั่นเข้ามาเรื่อยๆ จนเซ็นผู้เล่นต่างชาติมาเรียบร้อยแล้ว 3 คน ก็เพิ่งจะได้มาเปิดตัวฝึกสอนประจำทีมซักที
แน่นอนว่า โค้ชเดร เป็นโค้ชที่มากประสบการณ์และประสบความสำเร็จมามากมาย และแฟนๆ บาสชาวยุโรปก็เคยแสดงความเห็นว่าเขาเป็นโค้ชที่สร้างทีมด้วยงบที่ไม่สูงมากได้ดี
ทีนี้้ ถ้าได้มาคุมทีมที่มีงบค่อนข้างมาก (ถ้าเทียบกับทีมในระดับใกล้เคียงกัน) ก็คงเป็นเรื่องที่น่าสนใจว่าจะทำผลงานได้มากแค่ไหน
นอกจากนี้แล้ว โค้ชเดร ยังมีชื่อในด้านความเข้มงวด ซึ่งน่าจะได้ผลกับการเสริมสร้างผู้เล่นคนไทยไม่มากก็น้อย แต่ก็มีคำถามอีกเช่นเดียวกันว่า ไอ้ความเข้มงวดที่ขึ้นชื่อของโค้ชเนี่ย มันจะมีผลอย่างไรบ้าง? นักกีฬาจะตอบรับต่อความเปลี่ยนแปลงตรงนี้ได้มากน้อยแค่ไหนอย่างไร? นอกจากนี้แล้ว ก่อนที่จะลาออกจากทีม Stelmet ไป ก็มีข่าวว่า โค้ชเดร กับ ผู้เล่นในทีมเริ่มมีความเห็นไม่ตรงกันพอสมควร ตรงนี้มีความจริงมากน้อยเพียงไร และ อะไรเป็นสาเหตุที่ทำให้ความสัมพันธ์ไปถึงจุดตรงนั้นได้?
