After much anticipation and expectation that Justin Brownlee would be a late addition to the roster of San Miguel Alab Pilipinas, it was announced that he would instead be signing with Sporting Al-Riyadi in Lebanon.

Several Lebanese outlets broke the news first of the signing, including an official announcement by the club themselves on Instagram. Al-Riyadi are among one of the best teams in Lebanon with multiple league championships as well as a FIBA Asia Champions Cup title in 2017. They are among the title contenders in the Alfa Lebanese Basketball League this season, currently sporting a 9-3 record and are suffering a two-game losing streak.
This was then followed by an announcement from Brownlee’s agent, Sheryl Reyes. The Filipino agent assured that though Brownlee will be joining Riyadi for the remainder of the LBL season, he will be returning for a 4th consecutive season with Branagay Ginebra San Miguel in the Philippines Basketball Association (PBA).
Brownlee has helped Ginebra win the Governer’s Cup conference twice (2016-2017) and another title in the Commissioner’s Cup (2018). In two conferences last season, Brownlee averaged 30.8 points, 12.3 rebounds, and 6.9 assists per game.
The 2.01 M (6’7″) swingman also played a huge role in the championship run by San Miguel Alab Pilipinas in the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) in 2017-2018 with averages of 21.9 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 6.3 assists.
Most recently, Brownlee represented the Philippines again by playing for Mighty Sports Philippines in the 30th Dubai International Basketball Tournament in February 2019.
What does this Justin Brownlee signing mean?
Riyadi are still a pretty strong team, despite two straight defeats to league leaders, Champville, and 4th seed, Sporting Beirut. They have one of the best backcourts in the league with Wael Arakji, Jean Abdel Nour, Amir Saoud, and Mark Lyons but they still lacked muscle at the forward spot. In their two recent losses, they were overpowered by Fadi El Khatib (Champville) and Quincy Douby (Sporting Beirut).
Adding Brownlee is going to give Riyadi a good bulky all-around wing that can handle guys like El Khatib and Douby in the latter part of the seas-
Sorry, but I don’t really care much about that. What does this mean for Alab Pilipinas?
Oh.
It was much speculated among Alab Pilipinas fans that the team would eventually return Justin Brownlee to the team, especially after the run to the title last year. Even after not being signed to start the season, there was still optimistic hope that Brownlee would eventually join for the eventual playoff run.
The major hit in returning Brownlee to Alab was supposedly the salary cap, which would not allow the team to make a reasonable addition on top of the previous signings of PJ Ramos and Renaldo Balkman.
Even then, the rumors did not die down as there were still speculations that Alab Pilipinas could make a move at the roster change deadline (February 24) by cutting either PJ Ramos or Renaldo Balkman. In Alab’s game right before the day of the deadline, there was a rumor that Ramos had already moved on to another team and would be already be playing his last game.
No such moves were made and as we know now, Brownlee has eliminated all possibility of joining Alab Pilipinas this season by signing with Al-Riyadi. This shouldn’t matter much to Alab Pilipinas who currently have a 17-4 record and are not far away from clinching a top 2 seed in the playoffs. Getting Brownlee would have made their case as the best team in the league much more stronger, they are already doing a convincing job nonetheless without him.
So while the possibility of an Alab Pilipinas team with Balkman, Ramos, and Brownlee running through the ABL playoffs would have been fun, it will only remain as a pipe dream at least until next season.

มีการคาดหวังการมานานว่า Brownlee จะกลับมาอีกครั้ง ยิ่งหลังจากที่เคยคว้าแชมป์ด้วยกันมาแล้วด้วย แม้ว่าตอนต้นซีซั่นจะไม่ได้มีการเซ็นสัญญาไว้ด้วยกัน แต่แฟนๆ ก็มีความหวังมาตลอดว่า ไม่ช้าก็เร็ว Brownlee จะต้องมาแน่ๆ
สิ่งที่ทำให้การคว้า Brownlee มาร่วมทัพต้องติดชะงักก็คือ เรื่องของ Salary Cap หรือ เพดานเงินเดือน ซึ่ง การที่จะเซ็นทั้ง Brownlee, PJ Ramos และ Renaldo Balkman ให้ได้โดยค่าตัวไม่เกิดเพดานนั้น เป็นเรื่องแทบจะทำไม่ได้เลยสำหรับทีม Alab Pilipinas

แต่ท้ายที่สุดแล้วก็อย่างที่เห็น Alab Pilipinas ไม่มีการเปลี่ยนตัวใดๆ ทั้งสิ้น อีกทั้ง Brownlee ก็ยังออกมาประกาศตัวชัดเจนเรียบร้อยแล้วว่า ตัวเองคงไม่มีโอกาสที่จะมาร่วมป้องกันแชมป์กับทีมได้แล้วในปีนี้ หลังจากที่เซ็นสัญญากับ Al-Riyadi ซึ่งก็ไม่ใช่ปัญหาอะไรเลย สำหรับทีม Alab Pilipinas ที่ตอนนี้เป็นทีมจ่าฝูงด้วยสถิติชนะ 17 แพ้ 4 และน่าจะรั้งตำแหน่งจ่าฝูงนี้ได้จนจบซีซั่นอีกด้วย การที่ได้ Brownlee มาก็ทำให้กลายเป็นทีมที่น่าเกรงขามมากขึ้นอีกหลายเท่า แต่แค่นี้ ทีมก็ค่อนข้างที่จะแข็งแกร่งมากพออยู่แล้วด้วยซ้ำ
ถ้าหากว่า Brownlee, Balkman, และ Ramos ได้มาเล่นทีมเดียวกันกับ Alab Pilipinas ก็คงสนุกดี เป็นที่แข็งแกร่ง หาช่องโหว่ได้ยาก… แต่ตอนนี้มันก็คงเป็นได้เพียงแค่ฝันของแฟนๆ Alab Pilipinas เท่านั้น อย่างน้อยๆ ก็จนกว่าจะถึงฤดูกาลหน้าอีกที
