The Formosa Dreamers officially announce the signing of 22-year-old Jeff Wu for the remainder of the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) season.

With 9 games left, the Formosa Dreamers have an 11-6 record and are sitting at 2nd place in the ABL standings. They are currently only 3 more wins away from securing a playoff berth and have decided to add another important piece to strengthen the squad for a deep playoff run.
Jeff Wu made rounds in the rumor mill after attending his first ABL game to watch the Formosa Dreamers play against the Saigon Heat on February 16th, speculating that the 1.88M (6’2″) swingman could be joining the team before the ABL player registration deadline.
“The intensity of the game is very high. Many people are very good physically, especially with physical contact. The way the ball is handled on the court is quite similar to that of in the United States,” Wu mentioned of his impressions from his first ABL game viewing in the Dreamer’s press release, as roughly translated. After having practiced with the team for a week and getting a feel of the ABL competition, Wu has decided to join the Dreamers.
As a 15-year-old, Wu was starring as one of the top youth players in Chinese-Taipei at Jinhua Middle School before making a tough decision. As a teenager with limited English skills, he went on a year long exchange program at Union High School in Washington, USA. Wu later transferred to Modesto Christian High and shined with 10.4 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 2.1 assists to get recruited by NCAA D1 schools, Sacramento State and Eastern Washington.
Wu eventually accepted his scholarship offer from Sacramento State, becoming the first ever player from Chinese-Taipei to receive a scholarship to play NCAA Division 1 basketball.
“I said, ‘Holy moly, this kid can play,’ ” Sacramento State Head Coach Brian Katz mentioned about Wu’s recruitment process. “I’m like, ‘Are you kidding me?’ We went at him hard his junior year, and we got lucky. He signed with us early.”
“Jeff is very dynamic. When we heard about him, we had this image of him being just a shooter. But he’s got some real pop. He’s far from being a one-dimensional player and he’s quicker than you think,” added Katz.
In 69 games over 3 years with the Sacramento State Hornets, Wu averaged 5.3 points, 1.4 rebounds, and 1.2 assists in 18.6 minutes per game. Wu was hampered by ankle injuries in the later stages of his recent season with the Hornets and after an early graduation, decided to return to Taiwan to rehab and look for professional opportunities in Asia.
Over the summer of 2018, Wu made his debut for the Chinese-Taipei national team at the 40th William Jones Cup with Chinese-Taipei White team. Wu averaged 7.7 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 2.0 assists while shooting an impressive 38.9% from downtown. It was the second time for Wu playing at the Williams Jones Cup since 2 years ago at the 38th addition of the tournament with the Sacramento State Hornets.
Wu is now close to making his professional basketball debut for his homeland with the Formosa Dreamers in the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) when they take on the Hong Eastern Basketball Team and Wolf Warriors on February 23rd and 24th, respectively. Blackie Chen, a member of the Formosa Dreamers management, is glad to give this opportunity to Wu as both are alumni of Jinhua Middle School.
“Whether it is now or in the future to be able to take care of my former schoolmates has always been my goal,” Chen says in the Dreamer’s release of Wu’s signing, as roughly translated. “Being able to work on the same team is another dream come true!”
The addition of Jeff Wu, or Wu Yong Cheng, gives the Dreamers an additional and much needed presence on both sides of the floor at the wing position. The team is loaded in the backcourt with solid production from guards like Lee Hsueh Lin, Chen Shih Nien, and Wu Sung Wei but needs another warm body to split minutes with Kenny Chien and Malcolm Miller.
Chien is having a breakout season with 8.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game while Miller leads the team in scoring (20.7 points) with a ridiculous three-point shooting touch of 43%. To have a guy like Wu step up and give these guys a breather would mean a lot for a Dreamers who are aiming for a deep playoff run.
“We are very happy to have Jeff join the team,” Dreamer’s Head coach Dean Murray says (again roughly translated from the team’s press release). “He has the experience playing at the NCAA level in the United States and can defend the opponent’s local and import guards on the defensive end. He has a good understanding of the game and can also handle the ball, making us more threatening on offense.”
Wu will join Macau Black Bear and Filipino-American Mikh McKinney as the second Sacramento State Hornet alum in the ABL, though the two were one year apart from being teammates in college. However, Wu was did get to play with Filipino-American Trevis Jackson who is currently playing in the Philippines Basketball Association (PBA) as a rookie for the Meralco Bolts.
