After a delay from the usual timeline, the Thailand Basketball Super League or the TBSL will be back… with a couple of changes.

This upcoming TBSL season will be the 3rd edition of the international league based in Thailand after holding its inaugural season back in 2017. Aside from the usual teams from Thailand, the league has entertained clubs from outside the country as well including the likes of Singapore, Vietnam, Laos, and the Philippines.
What’s new in TBSL 2019?
The league usually starts sometime early in January and continues play for an approximate 3 month season. This year, the league will commence action on February 23 and the final game will be no later than March 25. One reason that the league is shortened down to only one month of play is because teams will only play in a single-round robin format, as opposed to play against each other twice in the regular season before the playoffs.
The 8 participating teams are:
Hitech (Thailand)
PEA (Thailand)
SWU Basketball Club (Thailand)
Luang Pra Bang (Laos)
Kabayan (Philippines)
Bulacan Kuyas (Philippines)
Malaysia Matrix (Malaysia)
Adroit (Singapore)
4 teams will make the playoffs, where they will play in Best-of-3 series in both the Semi-Finals and Finals round.
Teams are allowed to sign two World Import and two ASEAN Heritage Imports without playing time restrictions. However, Hitech will be allowed to field only one ASEAN Heritage Imports on the court at one time when they play against PEA and SWU.
Clubs from outside of Thailand are allowed to sign up to as much as 4 Thai players as locals for their own team, but will only be able to field in 2 of those players on the court at the same time.
After hosting the tournament at the GSB Stadium29 for the past two seasons, the league will now be playing it’s games at the Rajamangala University of Technology Rattanakosin in Nakhon Pathom instead.
That’s a lot of change for TBSL 2019 isn’t it?
One of the more notable changes in the league is the absense of two-time champion Mono Vampire Basketball Club. Also gone are Mono Thewphaingarm and Madgoats which means the league has managed to retain 3 of the previous season’s Semifinalists.
…but the new teams are a pretty nice addition!
Malaysia Matrix, or better known as NS Matrix, is arguably the best club in the country with a line up of national team stars in Kuek Tian Yuan, Wong Yi Hou, Ting Chun Hong, and Ivan Yeo among others. It has not been confirmed whether the Bulacan Kuyas are the same team as the team with the same name in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) in the Philippines, but if they are, they means it could feature a team with former imports like James Martinez, Jerick Canada, Stephen Siruma, and Jason Melano. New Thai club SWU Basketball Club has some of the best and brightest young talents in the country as well.
With the league shortened down to only one month and the change of venue, this almost feels like a whole different competition than that of the past two years.
Initial thoughts on TBSL 2019?
It is going to be weird for a league to be only one month long, including the entire playoffs. Fans will barely be able to get a chance to get used to the players and teams before the competition advances to the next stage. The league starts in about a week from now with little hype and by the time it gains any traction, we might already be crowning a new TBSL champion.
Speaking of new champions… being unable to retain the defending champions of the competition (as well as 2 other semifinalists) is a huge blow. Not only does the league lose the aura of a team defending the throne and teams aiming to topple the current kings, they also lose a very large fan base as well. Hitech and SWU will command a large chuck of attention from Thailand basketball fans, but it might not be enough to offset the loss of the two Mono teams.
Getting a team like Malaysia Matrix should help with the exposure of the league a bit, similar to the effect the Hanoi Buffaloes had with the league in the inaugural season. However, being unable to play in front of your own fans on your own home court makes it a bit awkward in terms of building up the team’s fanbase just as the Buffaloes encountered in their first season.
The change of venue to the Rajamangala University of Technology Rattanakosin is slightly more convenient compared to GSB Stadium29 in terms of public transportation, but is still considered quite a commute even for die hard fans. It will be interesting to see how the league makes the games a big enough of a draw to get fans to go to the games.
In the end, you can’t deny that the TBSL is a good platform for the local Thai players on Hitech/PEA/SWU to gain experience playing against imports and players from other countries. They aren’t playing anywhere else anyways. Of course, it will also depend on how much the team will be willing to use the local players in a league that allows 4 imports on the floor.

หลังจากที่เลื่อนตารางไปมาจากกำหนดการเดิม ในที่สุด TBSL ฤดูกาลที่ 2019 ก็ได้มีกำหนดที่จะระเบิดศึกแล้วในวันที่ 23 กุมภาพันธ์นี้
โดยปีนี้ จะเป็นปีที่ 3 สำหรับรายการ Thailand Basketball Super League (TBSL) ซึ่งเป็นลีกการแข่งขันรายการนานาชาติที่มีถิ่นฐานอยู่ที่ไทย นอกจากทีมหน้าเดิมๆ ในไทยแล้วที่ผ่านมาก็จะมีทีมจากประเทศเพื่อนบ้าน ทั้งสิงคโปร์ เวียดนาม ลาว และ ฟิลิปปินส์ อีกด้วย
แล้ว TBSL 2019 นี้มีอะไรใหม่ๆ บ้าง?
ตามเดิมแล้ว TBSL จะเริ่มต้นการแข่งขันขึ้นในช่วงต้นๆ เดือน มกราคม และ จะแข่งขันกันเป็นระยะเวลา 3 เดือนโดยประมาณ แต่ปีนี้ ตารางจะเร่งรัดขึ้นมาพอสมควร โดยจะเริ่มแข่งวันที่ 23 กุมภาพันธ์ และ จบอย่างช้าที่สุดในรอบชิงชนะเลิศ วันที่ 25 มีนาคม นอกจากนี้แล้ว เหตุผลที่ลีกร่นระยะเวลาในการแข่งขันเหลือเพียงหนึ่งเดือน เป็นเพราะปีนี้ทุกทีมจะแข่งแบบพบกันเพียง 1 ครั้งเท่านั้น จากที่ปกติเจอกัน 2 ครั้งในช่วงฤดูกาบปกติ
ปีนี้มีทีมที่เข้าร่วมการแข่งขันทั้งหมด 8 ทีม คือ
ไฮเทค (ไทย)
สโมสรการไฟฟ้าฯ (ไทย)
SWU Basketball Club (ไทย)
หลวงพระบาง (ลาว)
Kabayan (ฟิลิปปินส์)
Bulacan Kuyas (ฟิลิปปินส์)
Malaysia Matrix (มาเลเซีย)
Adroit (สิงคโปร์)
จะมีเพียง 4 ทีมที่ได้เข้ารอบเพลย์ออฟ แล้วจะทำการแข่งขันแบบ ชนะ 2 ใน 3 เกม ทั้งในรอบรองชนะเลิศ และ รอบชิงชนะเลิศ
แต่ละทีมจะสามารถเซ็นผู้เล่น World Import ได้ 2 คน และ ASEAN Heritage Import ได้อีกสองคน โดยไม่มีจำกัดเวลาในการลงเล่น จะมีข้อแม้ก็เพียงแค่ทีมไฮเทค ที่จะส่งผู้เล่น ASEAN Heritage ลงสนามได้ครั้งละเพียง 1 คนเท่านั้น ในเกมที่เจอกับทีมจากไทย ซึ่งก็คือ สโมสรการไฟฟ้าฯ และ SWU
ทีมอื่นๆ จากภายนอกประเทศไทยจะสามารถเซ็นผู้เล่นคนไทยเป็น Local Player ได้ทั้งหมด 4 คน แต่จะสามารถลงสนามได้เพียงครั้งละ 2 คนเท่านั้น
นอกจากนี้แล้ว สนามในการแข่งขันปีนี้ จะเปลี่ยนจากสนาม GSB Stadium29 มาเป็นสนาม Sports Complex ของ มหาวิทยาลัยเทคโนโลยีราชมงคลรัตนโกสินทร์ ที่จังหวะนครปฐม แทน
ถือว่าเปลี่ยนไปเยอะเลยนะนั้นสำหรับ TBSL 2019 ปีนี้
สิ่งที่เรียกได้ว่าเปลี่ยนไปชัดเจนมากที่สุดก็คือการที่แชมป์เก่าสองสมัยอย่าง Mono Vampire Basketball Club ไม่กลับมาเข้าร่วมแข่งขัน อีกทั้งยังขาดทีม Mono Thewphaingarm และทีม Madgoats อีกด้วย กลายเป็นว่า ทีมที่เข้ารอบ 4 ทีมสุดท้ายในคราวที่แล้ว 3 ทีมจะไม่ได้กลับมาเล่นในปีนี้
…แต่ทีมที่เข้ามาร่วมใหม่ก็น่าสนุกดีนะ!
Malaysia Matrix หรืออาจจะคุ้นหูกันมากกว่ากับชื่อว่า NS Matrix น่าจะถือว่าเป็นทีมที่ดีที่สุดในมาเลเซียแล้วตอนนี้ โดยมีตัวเด่นของทีมชาติแทบทุกคนทั้ง Kuek Tian Yuan, Wong Yi Hou, Ting Chun Hong, และ Ivan Yeo อีกทีมที่น่าสนใจคือ Bulacan Kuyas ที่ตอนนี้ยังไม่มีการยืนยันว่าเป็นทีมเดียวกับที่แข่งใน Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) ที่ประเทศฟิลิปปินส์อยู่รึเปล่า แต่ถ้าใช่ก็แปลว่ามีโอกาสที่ขนทัพมาทั้ง James Martinez, Jerick Canada, Stephen Siruma, และ Jason Melano ซึ่งต่างก็เคยเล่นในไทยเป็น Import กันมาหมดแล้ว ทีมไทยหน้าใหม่ใน TBSL อย่าง SWU Basketball Club เองก็ถือว่าเป็นทีมที่รวมดาวรุ่งที่น่าจับตามองมากที่สุดในไทยหลายคนไว้ในที่เดียวกันอีกด้วย
แต่การที่ลีกเหลือช่วงเวลาในการแข่งขันเพียงเดือนเดียว อีกทั้งยังมีการย้ายสถานที่จัดแข่งนั้น ทำให้รู้สึกเหมือนกับว่า TBSL ครั้งนี้ ไม่เหมือนกับครั้งที่ผ่านๆ มาเลย
แล้วเบื้องต้นนี่คิดยังไงกับ TBSL 2019 บ้าง?
มันก็คงแปลกหน่อยๆ อะนะ ที่แข่งแค่เพียงเดือนเดียวเท่านั้น รวมถึงรอบเพลย์ออฟด้วย เพราะแฟนๆ เองกว่าจะสร้างอารมณ์กว่าจะได้รู้จักทีม ได้รู้จักผู้เล่น ก็กลายเป็นว่า กำลังจะจบการแข่งขันไปซะละ ตอนนี้ลีกก็กำลังจะเริ่มต้นในอีกเพียง 1 สัปดาห์เท่านั้น และ แทบจะยังไม่ค่อยมีกระแสเท่าไหร่ รู้ตัวอีกทีนี่ก็อาจจะเริ่มแข่งรอบชิงกันแล้วด้วยซ้ำ
แล้วพูดถึงรอบชิง… การที่แชมป์เก่าอย่าง Mono Vampire ไม่กลับมาแข่ง รวมไปถึงทีมที่เข้ารอบ 4 ทีมสุดท้ายอีกสองทีมก็ถือว่าเป็นความเสียหายพอสมควร ส่วนหนึ่งก็ขาดอารมณ์ของการป้องกันแชมป์ และ การที่ทีมอื่นๆ มีเป้าหมายในการล้มแชมป์ แต่อีกประเด็นสำคัญก็คือ การที่เสียฐานแฟนที่ไม่ใช่น้อยๆ ของทีม Mono Vampire อีกเช่นเดียวกัน ฐานแฟนของไฮเทค กับ SWU ก็ถือว่ามีอีกจำนวนหนึ่งที่ไม่น้อย แต่ก็ถือว่าหายไปก้อนใหญ่ๆ เลยกับการที่ไม่ได้ทีม Mono Vampire กลับมาในปีนี้
การที่ได้ทีมอย่าง Malaysia Matrix มาก็ช่วยในเรื่องของการขยายตลาดของลีกบ้าง เหมือนกับทีม Hanoi Buffaloes ที่มาเข้าร่วมในการแข่งขันปีแรก แต่ก็เช่นเดียวกัน การที่ทีมที่มาเล่น ไม่ได้เล่นต่อหน้าแฟนๆ ของตัวเอง ในสนามบ้านของตัวเอง มันก็เป็นอีกปัญหาที่แก้ยาก อย่างที่ Hanoi Buffaloes เองก็เผชิญในปีนั้น
การที่เปลี่ยนสนามการแข่งขันมาที่ Sports Complex ของมหาวิทยาลัยเทคโนโลยีราชมงคลรัตนโกสินทร์ จาก GSB Stadium29 ก็ทำให้เดินทางด้วยการเดินทางสาธารณะง่ายขึ้นมาบ้าง แต่ก็ยังถือว่าเป็นมีระยะทางที่ไกลพอสมควรอยู่ดี ก็ต้องติดตามกันอีกว่าทางลีกจะมีวิธีการอย่างไรเพิ่มเติมบ้างในการดึงดูดให้แฟนๆ มีความสนใจจะเดินทางมาดูที่สนามมากขึ้น
แต่ท้ายที่สุดแล้ว ก็ปฏิเสธไม่ได้หรอกว่า TBSL มันก็เป็นเวทีที่ดีสำหรับผู้เล่นคนไทยของ ไฮเทค/ไฟฟ้าฯ/SWU ที่จะได้เก็บประสบการณ์เพราะตอนนี้ก็ไม่มีรายการอื่นให้เล่นอยู่ดี แน่นอนว่ามันก็ขึ้นอยู่กับทีมด้วยว่าจะมีโอกาสสำหรับผู้เล่นคนไทยมากขนาดไหนอีกด้วย เพราะแต่ละทีมก็จะมี Import ถึง 4 คนเช่นเดียวกัน
