Nine-year NBA veteran Carl Landry recently signed on to play for the Hiroshima Dragonflies in the second division of the B.League in Japan. Despite being in the just the second division of the booming Japanese Basketball League, the Dragonflies really need Landry to rack up some wins for the club with the highly competitive nature of the competition.

Let’s recap Carl Landry’s career a bit.
Landry started off in junior college. It is not exactly the most conventional route to a path in professional basketball, but other NBA stars like Shawn Marion and Bob McAdoo had also played at Vincennes University like Landry. The 6’9″ forward did well enough before transferring to star at Purdue University to eventually be enshrined to the Junior College Hall of Fame later in 2012.
He was an early second round pick by the Seattle Supersonics and was traded to the Houston Rockets on draft night and against all odds, he stuck on to the Rockets roster before enjoying an 9-year career in the NBA for 5 teams including the Houston Rockets, Sacramento Kings, Golden State Warriors, New Orleans Hornets, and the Philadelphia 76ers. For 4 straight seasons, Landry was a solid efficient scorer who put up double-digit averages.
Landry was waived on August 31, 2016 by the Philadelphia 76ers and was suddenly out of the NBA. Exactly one year later, Landry signed to play in the CBA with an upstart Jilin Northeast Tigers team where he averaged 26.7 points and 11.2 rebounds.
At 35-years-old with as rich of a resume as Landry, where would you expect him to play next? Europe maybe? Maybe a return to the CBA? KBL? PBA?
Nope.
Landry signed to play in the second division of the Japanese B.League with the Hiroshima Dragonflies.
While the first division of the B.League is rapidly developing to be one of the better leagues in Asia, it’s interesting that a team in the second division to draw a player of Carl Landry’s caliber. In a way, this mid-season signing not only says about how far basketball has come but also says about how much the Hiroshima Dragonflies want to win in the B.League Division 2 (B2).
Why though?
B.League Relegation
There are 18 teams in Division 1 of the B.League (B1) who fight over the course of 60 games in the regular season to determine the top 8 teams to make it to the playoffs. That’s exciting and all that, but the point that is trying to be made here instead focuses on the fate of the worst 4 teams by winning record instead.
Similar to the English Premier League, the B.League has a relegation system where teams move up and down from the first and second division according to their records. In B1, the worst 4 teams will play in a playoff format of two rounds of two-game series. The losers in the first round are automatically relegated and will be replaced by the champions and runners-up of B2. The winners have to continue their first for survival by playing against each other in the second round. The victor of this game gets to stay in B1, while the loser then has to play in a do-or-die matchup against the third-placed team of B2. This ultimate showdown grants the winner to stay in/be promoted to B1 while the loser goes back to/gets relegated to B2.
“Promotion to B1 is our target and we have been aiming to strengthen the team to make it to the be among the top B1 clubs,” Hiroshima’s Chairman Takaki Sakamoto said in the team’s official announcement of Landry’s signing (roughly translated). “With the addition of Landry, we further enhance the possibility [of getting promoted].”
In the B.League, it’s not only a fight for a championship among the top tier. Even the teams at the bottom of the standings have to fight until the very end to avoid falling a step behind. For the teams in the second division, they have to go all in as well to make their way up top.
This is the Hiroshima Dragonflies’ third straight season in B2 and this move to sign Landry means that they are serious on not returning for a 4th year. More than that, they know how painful it can be to come so close to promotion and missing out. The Dragonflies had an impressive 46-14 regular season in 2016-2017 and finished in 3rd place to set up a do-or-die match against the Yokohama B-Corsairs from B1. They ended up losing the game 74-53 and had to return to the B2.
Two seasons later and the Dragonflies are looking like a team that has a good shot at making it to B1. They currently hold a 25-12 record which is good for 5th in B2. In the remaining 23 games, the Dragonflies need to keep on winning to either win their division outright or have the best record among teams that don’t win their division to make it to the playoffs.
Landry made his debut on February 3, 2019 and didn’t disappoint by putting up 33 points on 11-17 shooting and 10 rebounds. It was not enough for the Dragonflies to get a win over their opponents, the Ehime Orange Vikings (I love B.League team monikers), who got a bonkers 58-point game from their import player, Andrew Fitzgerald.
Signing Landry was a move that the Dragonflies felt they needed to make if they are serious about making it to B1 promotion this season. This is not a PR stunt to draw in more fans. The Dragonflies are dead serious about getting that promotion. That’s how serious things get in the B.League.
That’s how much this matters.

… แต่แล้วสิ่งที่เหนือความคาดหมายก็เกิดขึ้น เมื่อชื่อของเขาไปโผล่กับการเซ็นในลีก ระดับดิวิชั่นสอง ของ B.League ในประเทศญี่ปุ่น กับทีม Hiroshima Dragonflies
ในขณะที่ลีกดิวิชั่นหนึ่งของ B.League ในญี่ปุ่นถือว่าก้าวขึ้นมาเป็นลีกแนวหน้าของเอเชียได้แล้ว แต่การที่ลีกในระดับชั้นรองลงมาในดิวิชั่น 2 หันมาทุ่มกำลังในการเซ็นผู้เล่นระดับ Carl Landry เป็นสิ่งที่น่าสนใจ ส่วนหนึ่งก็ทำให้เห็นว่าระดับการพัฒนาของบาสในลีกญี่ปุ่นก้าว แต่อีกมุมหนึ่งก็ทำให้เห็นว่าทีม Hiroshima Dragonflies นั้นมีความ “ต้องการ” ที่จะเอาชนะใน B.League ดิชิชั่นสอง หรือ B2 นี้มากขนาดไหน
แล้วทำไมมันเป็นอย่างนั้นละ?
การเลื่อนชั้นตกชั้นใน B.League
สำหรับ ดิวิชั่น 1 ของ B.League หรือ B1 นั้น จะมีทีมทั้งหมด 18 ทีมที่ต่อสู้กันอย่างดุเดือดทีมละ 60 เกม เพื่อตัดสินหา 8 ทีมที่ดีที่สุดสำหรับการเข้าไปแข่งขันหาแชมป์ในรอบเพลย์ออฟอีกที แน่นอนว่านี่คือจุดขายหลักของความสนุกและความตื่นเต้นของ B.League แต่ความมันส์นั้น ไม่ได้มีไว้สำหรับเพียงแค่ทีมระดับบนๆ เท่านั้น สิ่งที่จะน่าจับตามองอีกส่วนก็คือชะตากรรมของ 4 ทีมท้ายตารางที่ต้องต่อสู้กันต่อเมื่อจบช่วงฤดูกาลปกติเพื่อความอยู่รอดต่อไปใน B1
เป็นรูปแบบคล้ายๆ กับ English Premier League (EPL) ที่คนไทยคุ้นเคยกันอย่างดี คือ เมื่อสิ้นสุดการแข่งขันทุกๆ ฤดูกาลก็จะมีทีมที่ตกชั้น และ เลื่อนชั้นกันตามผลงาน แต่ก็มีจุดที่แตกต่างออกไปอยู่บ้าง
ใน B1 นั้น 4 ทีมที่มีสถิติที่แย่ที่สุดจะต้องไปแข่งขันในรอบ “เพลย์ออฟ” ของตัวเองเช่นเดียวกัน ด้วยการแบ่งเป็นการแข่งขันสองรอบ โดยแต่ละรอบเป็นซีรี่ย์สองเกม ระหว่าง 4 ทีม ในการแข่งขันรอบแรก สองทีมที่แพ้ ก็จะตกชั้นไปเล่นใน B2 ทันที และทีมที่เลื่อนชั้นขึ้นมาแทนก็จะเป็นแขมป์ กับ รองแชมป์ขอ B2 นั่นเอง
แต่!!! ทีมที่ชนะในรอบแรกก็ใช่ว่าจะอยู่รอดปลอดภัย เพราะต้องไขว้ไปเจอกันต่ออีกที ทีมที่เอาชนะได้ในรอบนี้ ก็จะได้อยู่ไปต่อ เล่นใน B1 อีกปี… ส่วนทีมที่พ่าย ก็จะต้องไปวัดในเกมชี้เป็นชี้ตายกับทีมอันดับ 3 จากการแข่งขัน B2 อีกทีเพื่อวัดอีกทีว่า ใครจะได้เล่นใน B1!
“การเลื่อนชั้นไปเล่น B1 คือเป้าหมายของทีมเรา และ เราทำมาทุกทางเพื่อที่จะเสริมแกร่งให้ทีมสามารถทำได้ตามเป้าหมาย” ประธานของทีม Hiroshima ทาคากิ ซากาโมโต้ กล่าวในงานแถลงเปิดตัวการเซ็น Carl Landry (แปลคร่าวๆ) “การที่เราเสริม Landry มาในทีมครั้งนี้ ก็หวังว่าจะช่วยเพิ่มโอกาสในการเลื่อนชั้นของทีมเราให้มากขึ้น”
ระบบตรงนี้ ทำให้ B.League จึงไม่ใช่เพียงแค่การต่อสู้กันของทีมที่ลุ้นแชมป์เท่านั้น แม้แต่ทีมที่อยู่ท้ายตารางก็จะไม่สามารถดับเครื่องของตัวเองได้ หากยังอยากอยู่รอดในการแข่งขันระดับสูงสุดของประเทศ เช่นเดียวกัน ทีมในระดับเพียง B2 เองก็สามารถที่จะมีฝันไกล มีเป้าหมายในการเลื่อนชั้นขึ้นสู่ B1 เพื่อยกระดับของสโมสรให้ก้าวข้ามไปอีกขั้น
