Hong Kong Eastern are known for their comeback rallies and was in full effect in their very first game of 2019 against the Mono Vampire. Down by nearly 20 points at one point, Hong Kong Eastern never backed down and overcame a shortage of personnel to win 95-88.

Everything was looking right for Mono Vampire early in the game… but the situation went south so quickly that it was so difficult to process, let alone resolve.
Mono Vampire held a whopping 17-point lead in the first quarter and Malcolm White was playing even better than expected, lifting the spirits of the struggling Thai squad in the opening interval. Things were looking bleak for home team Eastern with injuries to Jon Siu, an early disqualification on Adam Xu after picking up 5 fouls, and a late game injury to Wu Cheuk Pan.
Wait… how did Eastern even win this game?
Here are some key factors in this game.
Need that O’Darien Overdose
O’Darien Bassett didn’t have an explosive stat line but when he decided to take over, he took the f#*k over. He scored 7 straight points in a run to give Eastern their first lead of the game and they took it for good. Just for good measure, Bassett dropped his defender and dished a beautiful dime to Lee Ki for the three to seal the outcome of the game.

Malcolm not in the Middle
Malcolm White nearly had just as good a grand opening as Bassett after scoring 7 points in the very first quarter. He made sure to make an emphatic statement early, dropping a monstrous dunk near as the final minute of the first interval winded down.
Midway through the second quarter, it all came falling down. White went down hard after going up for a rebound and quickly clutched the back of his right thigh at the 4:20 mark. To the relief of Mono Vampire, he was able to get up and walk on his own to the bench but was visibly limping on his way.
White came back into the game multiple times, but seemed like he had to leave the court again each time in even worse pain. He would drop a big three late in the game but was far less impactful than he was projected to have been.
Mono Vampire actually did well for most of their part without White on the floor, especially Teerawat Chantachon who had 12 points and 6 rebounds. The 23-year-old had been struggling in the first 6 games of the season with only a total of 4 points, before breaking through for a gasp of fresh air in this game. He had a promising performance against old teammate, Samuel Deguara, getting a bulk of his points despite giving up nearly one foot in height.
It just wasn’t enough.
Eastern’s Patented Backcourt Pressure
A forgotten part of Eastern’s first ABL championship — hidden under the brilliance of Elliott, Lamb, and Boone — was just how punishing their halfcourt press can be. Last season’s team was a bit lacking with the absence of Chan Siu Wing, but now that Siu Wing is back they are ready to raise havoc on opposing guards.
Even one of the best guards in the ABL, Jason Brickman, struggled at times to run the Mono Vampire offense properly and committed 5 turnovers. 20-year-old Ricky Yang put in quality minutes of pressuring at midcourt, showing that Eastern might have depth this season.

Lee Ki was also a menace with his on-the-ball defence, getting 4 steals in crunch time situations in which some set up a couple of his 5 three-pointers in this game.
What is Wrong With Mono’s Offense?
Not having a consistent paint presence has surely affected one of the best offense in the ABL from last season, but it still is pretty baffling how limited Mono Vampire have been this year.
Michael Singletary is putting up herculean scoring performances after another and it’s obviously wearing him down. Contributions from Chantachon (before today), Darongphan Apiromvilaichai, Chitchai Ananti, and even Moses Morgan has been under par and inconsistent which doesn’t leave many options for Jason Brickman. Even Freddie Lish who was signed on to help improve the offensive firepower was unable to help in this game, putting up 0 points in 7 minutes of action. Things could (and should) get better once Mono finally gets White back to 100%, but their fans will have to hope that it won’t be too late.
Get Well Siu-n, Jon
This was supposed to be a breakout game for Jon Siu. His skill set and what he brought to the table overlapped a bit too much with Eric Ferguson and now with Ferguson out of the picture, it was expected that he would step up a bit. The ABL rookie had been performing well under the radar, putting up 6.9 points and 4.0 rebounds with 40 3P% shooting… before suffering an injury only 4 minutes into the game.

Eastern were able to win without Siu for the rest of the game, but he has been a big part of Coach Torres’ rotation so if they miss him for an extended period will obviously hurt.

Mono Vampire will have to regroup quickly before a rematch against the Saigon Heat on Sunday (January 6th). They lost their first encounter only 2 weeks prior and will now have to face the Heat again who are fuming after a last second loss to the Westports Malaysia Dragons.
Eastern will be starting what is dubbed “The Devil’s Schedule” also on Sunday when they visit the Dragons in Malaysia. The game will be the first of 4 away games in the span of 11 days which will include a home game against the Singapore Slingers.

โอ้ O’Darien Basset ทำไมเจ้าทำเช่นนี้
จังหวะที่ O’Darien Bassett ตั้งใจที่จะเอาแต้มมาให้ได้ เขาทำได้และ ทำได้แย่างโคตรเท่ด้วย ในช่วงควอเตอร์ที่ 4 ช่วงที่เขาทำ 7 แต้มรวด เป็นจังหวะที่ทำให้ Eastern ขึ้นนำเป็นครั้งแรกของเกม และก็นำไปจนจบเกมอีกด้วย จังหวะหลังจากนั้น Basset จัดการล่อฝ่ายป้องกันทั้งหมดมาหาเขา เพื่อจัดฉากการยิงสามแต้มของ Lee Ki ตอกฝาโรงลงไป
เกือบดีแล้วนะนาย Malcolm White
เกือบไปแล้ว อีกนิดเดียวเท่านั้น… Malcolm White เปิดตัวอย่างดุดัน ทำไป 7 แต้มในควอเตอร์แรก แถมมีจังหวะดั๊งโหดๆ ในช่วงนาทีสุดท้ายของควอเตอร์
พอเข้าควอเตอร์ที่สองเท่านั้นแหละ พังครืนลงมาเกือบหมดเลย ในช่วงนาทีที่ 4 White กระโดดขึ้นเพื่อคว้ารีบาวด์ และ ทันทีลงพื้นมาก็คว้าช่วงหลังของขาขวาด้วยท่าทางที่แสดงออกถึงความเจ็บปวด ท้ายที่สุดแล้วเขาสามารถลุกขึ้นเพื่อเดินกลับไปที่ม้านั่งได้ด้วยตัวเอง ซึ่งเป็นสัญญาณที่ดี แต่ก็เห็นได้ชัดว่าเดินด้วยอาการกะเผลกเล็กน้อย
White กลับมาลงในสามอีกสองสามครั้งก็จริง แต่ลงทีไร ก็กลับต้องออกไปจากสนามอีกรอบ แต่ละครั้งดูเหมือนอาการบาดเจ็บจะรุนแรงขึ้นทุกที ช่วงท้ายเกมเขากลับมายิงสามแต้มลูกสำคัญได้ แต่นอกจากนั้นแล้ว บทบาทของเขาก็หายไปเกือบหมดในช่วงครึ่งหลัง
ในช่วงที่ White ไม่ได้ลงสนาม Mono Vampire ทำได้ดีในการประคับประคองเกม (อย่างน้อยก็จนถึงช่วงท้ายที่ถูกแซงขึ้นไป) โดยเฉพาะ “บิ๊ก” ธีรวัฒน์ จันทะจร ที่ทำไปได้ 12 แต้มและ 6 รีบาวด์ เกมนี้ ถือว่าเป็นเกมที่ดีที่สุดของบิ๊กในซีซั่นนี้ และอาจจะเหมือนได้ยกภูเขาออกจากอก หลังจากที่ทำได้เพียง 4 แต้มใน 6 เกมก่อนหน้านี้ เป็นจังหวะที่ดีที่ได้ปะทะกับเพื่อนร่วมทีมเก่า Samuel Deguara ซึ่งบิ๊กทำได้ดีในการทำแต้มข้ามเซนเตอร์ร่างยักษ์ที่สูงกว่าเขาเกือบ 1 ฟุตเต็มๆ
น่าเสียดายที่มันไม่มากพอที่จะทำให้คว้าชัยชนะมาได้
เกมป้องกันสุดเหนียวแนวหน้าของ Eastern
หลายๆ คนอาจจะลืมไปว่าในปีแรกที่ Eastern สามารถคว้าแชมป์ ABL ได้นั้น นอกจากความเทพของ Marcus Elliott, Tyler Lamb, และ Josh Boone สิ่งที่โดดเด่นออกมาก็คือการป้องกันแบบกดดันช่วงครึ่งสนามนั้นเอง ฟอร์มการป้องกันของปีที่แล้วอาจจะตกลงไปบ้าง เพราะขาด Chan Siu Wing ที่บาดเจ็บพักไปยาวๆ แต่ตอนนี้เขากลับมาแล้ว ทำให้สามารถคืนฟอร์มเกมป้องกันดีๆ ได้อีกครั้ง
แม้แต่การ์ดระดับท็อปของลีกอย่าง Jason Brickman ยังลำบากที่จะฝ่าแนวรับนี้ไปได้ และ เสียการครองบอลไปถึง 5 ครั้ง โดยมีการ์ดดาวรุ่งวัย 20 ปี Ricky Yang เป็นหนึ่งในแนวป้องกันความหวังของทีมที่ทำผลงานได้ดีในวันนี้

ขาประจำอย่าง Lee Ki ก็ฟอร์มดีขึ้นมาเช่นเดียวกัน ขโมยลูกแบบต่อหน้าต่อตาเนียนๆ ถึง 4 ครั้งซึ่งมีหลายจังหวะที่ปั้นลูกยิงสามแต้มของเขาที่ทำไปได้ 5 ครั้งในเกมนี้
เกมบุกของ Mono Vampire เป็นอะไรอะ?
การที่ไม่ีเซนเตอร์หรือผูเ้เล่นวงในที่ได้ลงสนามอย่างต่อเนื่อง แน่นอนว่าส่งผลต่อฟอร์มของเกมบุกที่ดีที่สุดใน ABL ทีมหนึ่งเมื่อปีที่ผ่านมา… แต่ถึงจะว่าอย่างนั้นก็เถอะ มันก็ไม่น่าจะตกลงมาได้ขนาดนี้อยู่ดี
ตอนนี้กลายเป็นว่าในทุกๆ เกม Michael Singletary จะต้องทำแต้มให้ได้เป็นกอบเป็นกำอย่างบ้าพลัง และ มันทำให้เขาล้าอย่างเห็นได้ชัด ผู้เล่น local ทั้งหลาย ทั้ง “บิ๊ก” ธีรวัฒน์ (ก่อนหน้าเกมนี้) “ปาล์ม” ดรงค์พันธ์ “เป้” ชิตชัย หรือแม้แต่ Moses Morgan เองก็ฟอร์มตกลงมาจากปีที่แล้วอย่างชัดเจน ทำให้ Jason Brickman เหลือตัวเลือกที่จะใช้งานน้อยลงไปอีก แม้แต่ Freddie Lish ที่เอาเข้ามาเพื่อหวังเสริมเกมบุกก็ได้ลงไปเพียง 7 นาทีในเกมนี้ และ ทำแต้มไม่ได้เลย
เชื่อว่าอะไรๆ ก็คงดีขึ้นเมื่อได้ White กลับมาในสภาพ 100%… แต่ก็ไม่แน่ใจว่าจะสายไปหรือไม่
หายไวๆ นะนาย Jon Siu
จริงๆ แล้วเกมนี้ น่าจะเป็นเกมที่ Jon Siu ได้ประกาศศักดาว่าเขาเป็นผู้เล่น Local ที่ดีที่สุดคนหนึ่งในลีกนี้ ที่ผ่านมารูปแบบการเล่น หรือ สิ่งที่เขาทำได้ ค่อนข้างทับซ้อมกับ Eric Ferguson มากไปหน่อย ซึ่งพอไม่มี Ferguson แล้วก็คาดการณ์ไว้ว่า Siu น่าจะก้าวขึ้นมาทดแทนส่วนที่หายไปนั้นได้อีกระดับ ในการเล่นปีแรกของเขาคน Siu ทำไปได้ 6.9 แต้ม 4.0 รีบาวสด์ และ ยิงสามแต้มที่ 40% อีกด้วย ก่อนที่จะลงเล่นในเกมนี้
…แล้วผ่านไปเพียง 4 นาทีในเกมนี้ เขาก็เจ็บจนต้องถึงหิ้วปีกออกไปจากสนาม

ในเกมนี้ Eastern สามารถเอาชนะไปได้ก็จริง แม้จะไม่มี Siu แต่เขาก้าวขึ้นมาเป็นส่วนสำคัญของแผนการเล่นในทีม ถ้าขาดเขาไปก็คงต้องวางกระบวนทัพใหม่ระดับฟนึ่งดเหมือนกัน
หลังจากเกมนี้ Mono Vampire มีเพียงพักเพียงหนึ่งวันก่อนที่ต้องเดินทางไปแข่งกับ Saigon Heat อีกครั้งในวันที่ 6 มกราคม เป็นครั้งที่สองในรอบสองสัปดาห์ อีกทั้งยังต้องเจอกับ Heat ที่กำลังหัวร้อนจากการที่แพ้ให้กับอริอย่าง Westports Malaysia Dragons วินาทีสุดท้าย
ทางด้านของ Eastern ก็จะเริ่มเข้าสู่ช่วงที่เขาเรียกว่า สัปดาห์นรก ซึ่งเริ่มต้นด้วยการเยือนทีม Dragons ในวันอาทิตย์ ซึ่งจะเป็นเกมเยือนเกมแรกจากทั้งหมด 4 เกมที่จะแข่งในรอบ 11 วัน และมีแถมคั่นด้วยหนึ่งเกมในบ้าน เจอกับ Singapore Slingers
