Though the Mono Vampire Basketball Club were finally able to end their 4-game losing streak and claim their first win of the season, the team still felt a need for change and have now formally announced the addition of three-season ABL veteran, Freddie Goldstein.

“Who the hell is Freddie Goldstein?”
30-year-old Freddie Goldstein (or Freddie Lish or whichever name he goes by now) is a pretty well-known commodity in the ASEAN Basketball community especially in Thailand. His yo-yo handles, laidback attitude, and pure showmanship have made him a fan favorite wherever he goes.
His first introduction to the region was as a Heritage Import for Hitech Bangkok City back in 2015-2016 where he averaged 17.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4.7 assists, and 2.4 steals in his rookie season and has been all over the place since. After an 8-game stint with the Westports Malaysia Dragons in 2016-2017, Goldstein returned to the ABL for a third season with the CLS Knights. While he was less productive than that of his spectacular rookie season, he still put up a solid 13.3 PPG, 3.5 RPG, and 3.2 APG line.
“How the hell did Mono Vampire get Freddie Goldstein?”
Goldstein is of Thai heritage from his mother who was born in Thailand. For the past few seasons, this has qualified him as a Heritage Import for his former ABL teams. However, with the changes to the Player Eligibility rules this season, Goldstein is able to be registered as a local player for Mono Vampire just like Moses Morgan. Therefore, Mono Vampire are able to add Goldstein to the roster without having to cut anyone out.
“What is a Freddie Goldstein?”
Freddie is a scoring guard in the purest form possible. He can pass and he can really whip up some crazy dimes, but his mentality once the team gets on offense is focused on the best way possible for himself to score. And it helps that Goldstein can score in so many ways. Goldstein has a wiry strong frame and is gifted with speed and athleticism. He can drop you with a crossover, blow by you from the perimeter, and finish in the paint after absorbing contact. He has the confidence to shoot, which makes him difficult to cover when he gets in his groove.
However, Goldstein’s gaudy scoring numbers in his rookie season (17.8) came at the expense of being labeled as a “trigger-happy” guard after attempting nearly 20 shots per game. His field goal shooting percentages were not easy on the eyes. Those numbers dropped even further in his second season with the Dragons and it was probably one of the reasons why he lasted only 8 games on a struggling team. He got a chance to redeem himself with the CLS Knights and upped his efficiency a bit to last the entire season in Indonesia.

Interestingly, Goldstein’s spike in efficiency in his recent season also coincides with him logging the least amount of playing time.

You might look at Goldstein’s raw numbers and sat that’s he’s declining. However, he’s actually producing at a similar or even higher rate with even more efficiency… just in lesser minutes played.
The volume of the shots he takes and the inconsistency in converting those shots into points usually cloaks the fact that, at his best, Goldstein is a high-level all-around guard capable of nearly doing anything. If he wants to, he can be a high quality creator for his teammates. When he wants to, he’s had stretches where he locks down opposing guards. The fact that he holds the ABL’s All-Time single game steals record (10) says a little about his defensive efforts.
There is no doubt about Goldstein’s level of talent and what sort of player he can be. The question lies more on how much of Freddie Goldstein you will get.
“Why Freddie Goldstein?”
Mono Vampire may have already gotten their first win and things are looking better, but whatever concerns they had during their season-starting losing streak lingered on even in their victory. They need more production outside of Mike Singletary. They need someone to be able to either give Jason Brickman a breather or help him out with running the offense.
On paper, Goldstein should be able to give Mono what they want. He can be a solid distributor if needed (4.0 assists per game over his career) and he’s not afraid to take off some of the offensive load from Singletary and/or Moses Morgan as well.
“How will Freddie Goldstein be used?”
The fun thing (for fans like me) about adding Goldstein is that he is as close to a direct opposite to Jason Brickman as it can get. One is a score-first guard, the other is a pure pass-first guard. You can therefore play both together at the same time or bring them in to relieve each other from time to time. Coach Douglas Marty can start off games with Brickman setting the tone and tempo before bringing in Goldstein to wreak havoc with the second unit. He can use both players on the court at the same time with Brickman setting things up for three versatile scorers in Goldstein, Morgan, and Singletary.
The not so fun part will be for the coaching staff to figure out which scenario is best. Would the team benefit more from Goldstein coming off the bench or Goldstein starting games? What does the team need from Goldstein? And maybe most importantly, will Goldstein be capable of adapting into the roles the team sets for him?
It’s never easy to bring in a player that will be expected of such a big role in the middle of the seasons to bring in instant results, but that’s exactly what we will be going on here. With that said, there is not much downside for Mono Vampire in getting this deal done. With Goldstein being classified as a local player, he doesn’t have to replace anyone on the registered roster and instead will be eating up so minutes here and there from Brickman/Morgan/Singletary to give those guys more rest. The potential upside is sky-high as Goldstein gives them a starter-level guard, adding more depth in the position.
“Final Thoughts on Freddie Goldstein?”
It’s a great move and one I would have already done since before the start of the season. As mentioned, it’s a low-risk, high-reward move that could potentially boot them up in contention for a Top-4 seed in this ABL season.
Most importantly, Freddie Goldstein is one of the most entertaining players to watch and it’s just good to see him back in action.

การ์ดวัย 30 ขวบ Freddie Goldstein หรือ Freddie Lish หรือชื่ออะไรของเขานั่นแหละที่ใช้ตอนนี้ ถือว่าเป็นนักบาสที่ค่อนข้างเป็นที่รู้จักกันในแวดวงนี้ ด้วยความสามารถในการเลี้ยงบอลที่แพรวพราว นิสัยง่ายๆ สบายๆ และ ความที่เป็น Entertainer ที่ดี ทำให้มีแฟนๆ ติดตามผลงานอยู่อย่างต่อเนื่องเสมอ
ครั้งแรกที่เขาเล่นในภูมิภาคนี้ คือ กับทีม Hitech Bangkok City ใน ABL ปี 2015-2016 เป็นการเปิดตัวที่โคตรเท่ ทำไป 17.8 แต้ม 4.3 รีบาวด์ 4.7 แอสสิสต์ และ 2.4 สตีนต่อเกม ในปีถัดมาก็ได้ไปเล่นกับทีม KL Dragons (มาเลเซีย) แต่ก็ฟอร์มดรอปโดนปล่อยตัวหลังจากเล่นไปเพียง 8 เกม ก่อนที่จะได้เล่นกับทีม CLS Knights (อินโดนีเซีย) ในปีที่ผ่านมา แม้ว่าผลงานทางสถิติจะลดลงไปอยู่บ้าง แต่ก็ยังถือว่าเป็นตัวอันตรายด้วยผลงาน 13.3 แต้ม 3.5 รีบาวด์ และ 3.2 แอสสิสต์ต่อเกม
“Mono Vampire ไปเอา Freddie Goldstein มาได้ไงฟะ?”
คือ Freddie นี่ก็มีเชื้อสายไทยผ่านทางคุณแม่ที่เกิดที่ประเทศไทย ซึ่งตรงนี้ทำให้เขาสามารถเล่นเป็นตัว Heritage Import ในปีที่ผ่านๆ มากับทีมอื่นๆ แต่ด้วยความที่ปีนี้ กฏของตัวผู้เล่น Local ใน ABL มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงเงื่อนไขให้ไม่เข้มงวดเท่าเดิม ทำให้ Freddie สามารถส่งรายชื่อเป็นผู้เล่น Local ได้ เหมือน Moses Morgan นั่นแหละ
การที่ได้ Freddie มานี่ ก็แปลว่า ไม่ต้องไปเปลี่ยนเอาใครออกจากทีม เหมือนตอนที่เปลี่ยนเอา Marcus Keene ออก เพื่อเซ็น Chris Charles
“Freddie Goldstein คืออะไร เป็นผู้เล่นแบบไหน?”
ฟันธงกันตรงๆ ไม่มีอ้อมค้อม Freddie คือการ์ดทำแต้มจัดๆ แบบเพียวๆ เลยนี่แหละ ถึงแม้ว่าเขาจะมีทักษะการจ่ายบอลที่ดี และ สามารถจ่ายบอลได้สวยงามหลายๆ ครั้ง แต่เวลาลงสนามไปแล้ว ความมุ่งมั่นของเขาอยู่กับการคิดหาเส้นทางในการทำคะแนนด้วยตัวเองซะมากกว่า ซึ่งก็ไม่ได้เป็นเรื่องลบทั้งหมดซะทีเดียว เพราะ Freddie ก็ทำแต้มได้หลากหลายแนวทางและทำได้ดีด้วย
ด้วยร่างกายที่แข็งแรงโดยธรรมชาติ ทั้งเรื่องการกระโดด การปะทะ และ ความเร็ว Freddie สามารถที่จะครอสโอเวอร์ ข้ามพุ่งผ่านตัวประกบเข้าหาห่วง แล้วก็ทำแต้มแม้จะโดนปะทะแล้วก็ตามที ยิ่งกว่านั้นคือ “ความมั่นใจ” ในการทำคะแนนของตัวเอง ซึ่งทำให้เขาเป็นตัวที่ประกบยากขึ้นไปอีก เมื่อเขารู้สึกว่าตัวเองกำลังเข้าฝัก
แต่ภายใต้การทำแต้มระเบิดระเบ้อนั่นแหละ ทำให้เขากลายเป็นการ์ดที่คนส่วนใหญ่อาจจะมองว่า “ขี้ยิง” หรือ “หวงบอล” ก็ได้ในบางที ในการเล่นปีแรกที่ทำไปได้ 17.8 แต้มต่อเกมนั้น เขายิงไปทั้งหมดเกือบ 20 ครั้งต่อเกมด้วยซ้ำ ซึ่งทำให้ประสิทธิภาพในการทำคะแนนของ Freddie ไม่ค่อยน่าดูน่าชมเท่าไหร่นัก ยิ่งพอในฤดูกาลที่สองที่เล่นกับ Dragons ยิ่งเห็นชัดมากขึ้น และก็น่าจะเป็นอีกเหตุผลหนึ่งที่ทำให้เขาลงเล่นไปได้เพียงแค่ 8 เกมเท่านั้น
ในปีที่ผ่านมา เขาเริ่มกู้ชื่อได้บ้างกับทีม CLS Knights และก็มีประสิทธิภาพการทำแต้มที่ดีมากขึ้น ได้เล่นจนจบฤดูกาล

สิ่งที่น่าสนใจอีกอย่างก็คือ ประสิทธิภาพการทำแต้มของ Freddie ที่พุ่งขึ้นมาในปีที่ผ่านมานั้น อาจจะมีผลเกี่ยวเนื่องกับจำนวนเวลาในการลงเล่นที่ลดลงด้วย

บางทีถ้าดูสถิติของ Freddie อาจจะรู้สึกว่าเขาอยู่ในช่วงถดถอยของอาชีพการเล่นแล้ว แต่ในความเป็นจริงคือ หากเทียบตามอัตราส่วนเวลาที่ลงเล่นแล้ว เขายังทำผลงานได้เท่าๆ เดิม หรือ ดีกว่าเดิมด้วยซ้ำ… แถมยังมีประสิทธิภาพในการเล่นสูงขึ้นอีก
ประเด็นเรื่องการทำแต้ม จำนวนครั้งในการยิงเหล่านี้ หลายๆ ครั้งก็ทำให้แฟนๆ มองข้ามไปว่า Freddie จริงนี่เป็นการ์ดที่ถือว่าครบเครื่องมากคนหนึ่งเลย แทบจะเรียกว่าทำได้ทุกอย่าง ถ้าเขาอยากปั้นเกมให้เพื่อนร่วมทีม เขาก็ทำได้ดี ถ้าเขาอยากหันมามุ่นมั่นกับการประกบตัวผู้เล่นตรงข้ามให้ทำแต้มได้ยาก เขาก็ทำมาแล้ว และการที่เขาเป็นคนเดียวในประวัติศาสตร์ ABL ที่เคยทำสตีลถึง 10 ครั้งในหนึ่งเกมก็น่าจะยืนยันความสามารถในการป้องกันได้บ้าง
ทั้งหมดนี้ คือ ไม่มีใครหรอก ที่สงสัยในระดับความสามารถของ Freddie หรือ สงสัยว่าเขาจะเก่งได้ขนาดไหน
สิ่งที่สงสัยก็มีเพียงแค่ว่า การลงเล่นแต่ละครั้งเนี่ย เขาจะมีความสนใจในการทำอะไรบ้างตอนที่ลงสนาม หรือ อยากเล่นแบบไหนมากกว่า
“ทำไมต้องเธอ Freddie Goldstein?”
ชัยชนะครั้งแรกของฤดูกาลมันหอมหวานแน่นอนแหละ อะไรๆ ก็ดูดีขึ้นมาทันตา แต่ สิ่งที่น่าเป็นห่วงในสองเกมแรกของฤดูกาลนั้น ก็ยังคงเป็นสิ่งที่น่าเป็นห่วงต่อไปสำหรับทีมนี้ พวกเขาต้องการผู้เล่นคนอื่นๆ ยกระดับผลงานของตัวเองมากขึ้นเพื่อช่วย Mike Singletary อีกทั้งยังต้องการผู้เล่นที่จะมาช่วยแบ่งเบาภาระการ์ดจ่ายของ Jason Brickman อีกด้วย ให้เขาได้พัก
ในทางทฤษฎี Freddie น่าจะตอบโจทย์ตรงนี้ได้ครบทั้งสองข้อ เขาสามารถเป็นคนเดินเกมบุกที่ (ด้วยสถิติ 4.0 แอสสิสต์ต่อเกมตลอดการเล่น ABL) อีกทั้งยังมีความมั่นใจในการแบ่งเบาภาระเกมบุกออกมาจาก Singletary และ Moses Morgan หากเขาต้องการ

สำหรับแฟนๆ อย่างเรา สิ่งน่าสนุกคือ การที่ Freddie แทบจะเรียกได้ว่าเป็นขั้วตรงข้ามกันของ Jason Brickman เลยก็ว่าได้ คนหนึ่งก็แทบจะจ่ายอย่างเดียวไม่สนใจโลกจนเพื่อนร่วมทีมต้องบ่นให้จ่ายบอล อีกคนบางทีก็ลั่นยิงเร็วซะจนเพื่อนร่วมทีมบ่นว่าส่งบอลให้ยิงบ้าง เพราะฉะนั้น มันจึงสนุกที่จะจินตนาการเอาว่า จะจัดการใช้งานการ์ดสองตัวนี้ยังไงดี จะใช้ทั้งสองคนพร้อมกัน หรือ จะให้มาแบ่งเบาภาระกัน ก็ได้ทั้งหมด บางทีอาจจะให้ Brickman เป็นตัวจริง เพื่อกำหนดจังหวะของเกมก่อน ถึงค่อยให้ Freddie ลงมาเป็นตัวทำแต้มหลักของชุดที่สอง หรือบางทีก็อาจจะเอาลงคู่กันไปเลยก็ได้ โดยให้ Goldstein เป็นการ์ดตัวยิง
ส่วนที่ไม่น่าสนุก ก็คือหน้าที่ของทีมงาน Mono Vampire ที่จะต้องเร่งเวลาในการตัดสินใจสถานการณ์แบบไหนที่เหมาะกับการใช้งาน Freddie มากที่สุด มันไม่ใช่เรื่องง่ายเลยแหละ ที่จะเอาผู้เล่นหน้าใหม่ที่บทบาทในทีมสูงเข้ามาในช่วงกลางฤดูกาล และ คาดหวังว่าผลงานจะราบรื่น ซึ่งนั่นคือสถานการณ์ตอนนี้ แต่ก็อย่างที่ว่า Mono Vampire แทบไม่ต้องเสี่ยงต้องลุ้นอะไรกับการเซ็นครั้งนี้ เพราะเป็นการเซ็นผู้เล่น Local เลยไม่มีต้องมีการตัดตัวใคร แถมยังมีโอกาสที่จะได้ผู้เล่นในระดับที่เป็นการ์ดตัวจริงๆ ในลีกระดับ ABL สามฤดูกาลที่ผ่านมา เพิ่มขึ้นอีก 1 คนเลยด้วยซ้ำ
“ขอสามคำกับการเซ็น Freddie Goldstein หน่อย”
คุ้ม-มันส์-(อะไรก็ได้อีกอย่าง คิดไม่ออกละ)
เป็นการเซ็นที่ดี มีเหตุผล เสี่ยงน้อย ผลตอบแทนสูง และเป็นการเซ็นที่น่าจะทำตั้งแต่ต้นซีซั่นซะด้วยซ้ำ ท้ายสุดแล้วการเซ็นครั้งนี้ อาจจะเป็นจุดเปลี่ยนที่ทำให้ Mono Vampire กลับมาลุ้น 4 อันดับสูงสุดในปีนี้ก็ได้
ที่สำคัญ Freddie เป็นคนที่เล่นบาสได้ “สนุก” และ “บันเทิง” กับคนดูได้มากจริงๆ การที่ได้เห็นเขากลับมาสู่สังเวียน ABL อีกรอบถึงเป็นอะไรที่น่าดีใจ น่าติดตาม
ทิ้งท้ายด้วยว่า ตอนนี้ เราได้เห็นผู้เล่นสองคนจาก ไฮเทคชุดปี 2015-2016 คือ Chris Charles กับ Freddie Goldstein แล้ว… คิดว่ามีโอกาสที่จะมีเสริมเพิ่มมาอีกคนหรือไม่!!!
