After the withdrawal of the Japanese Club SunRockers Shibuya, Chooks-To-Go Pilipinas from the Philippines were awarded with the wildcard slot to fulfill the 10 teams to participate in the club competition in Chenzhou, China from 22-30 September.

It had been expected that a change of some sort was bound to happen when FIBA released the initial groups with the Japanese team noted as “TBD” or “to be decided”.
It was only a matter of time before changes were made and indeed there were changes to come.
The official announcement from FIBA reported that the SunRockers Shibuya “had to withdraw after extensive efforts to adjust the B.League schedule to fit the games is proved unsuccessful.” With the withdrawal of the Japanese club, FIBA granted the wildcard slot to… Chooks-To-Go Pilipinas!
It appears that Coach Chot Reyes was first to break the news of the participation.
While having a Philippines team in any basketball competition is fun news, this certain situation raised so questions… at least for me.
Disclaimer: Opinions and comments in this post are all my own and not associated with any other organization and/or teams involved or mentioned in the post.
Question No. 1: WHAT ARE CHOOKS-TO-GO PILIPINAS?
This is an important question that deserves an important answer. Here I present you with a video that should best define “Chooks-To-Go Pilipinas”:

On a more serious note, “CHOOKS-TO-GO PILIPINAS” is comprised of two important components: “Chook-To-Go” and “Pilipinas”.
Amazing right?
According to the ever reliable wikipedia, “Chooks-To-Go is a chain of stores owned by Bounty Agro Ventures, Inc. (BAVI), a privately owned company operating in the Philippines. It offers roast chicken and processed meats for off-premises consumption, and is the largest roasted chicken retail business in the country.”
Being the largest roasted chicken retail business in the country pretty much gives them the right to the tagline which they have gracefully used to name the jingle “Manok Ng Bayan” or loosely translated to “Bird of the Nation”.
“Pilipinas” is pretty straight forward in where it shows that this team will be representing the Philippines.
Chooks-To-Go is sponsoring the team that is representing the Philippines and thus, Chooks-To-Go Pilipnas was born. In fact, Chooks-To-Go has recently been the main sponsor of the Philippines National Team in international competitions as well.
The team is said to have already recruited Christian Standhardinger, Kiefer Ravena, Jeron Teng, Raymar Jose, Jett Manuel, Carl Bryan Cruz, and Bright Akhuetie for the team according to several sources. However, the final roster has yet to have been released yet.
Here’s the problem/issue/concern about Chooks-To-Go Pilipinas though: they aren’t actually a club team.
Question No. 2: Why is that a problem?
Good question.
First of all, the FIBA Asia Champions Cup presents itself as “Asia’s premier basketball club competition”. To be a premier basketball club competition and suddenly have a team that’s not actually 100% a club compete in sort of kills the “vibe” that the competition is trying to build up.
While it’s not a big deal since Chooks-To-Go Pilipinas will surely be competitive and will have a huge fan following, it might “set bad precedence and kills the authenticity of the FIBA Asia Champions Cup” as mentioned by an anonymous source.
In the recent years, FIBA seems to have been trying to push the FIBA Asia Champions Cup into a bigger event and it’s questionable moves like this that hinders the process.
One thing they could do to avoid such issues in the future is to clearly define what is a “club” according to FIBA terms as well as set a solid qualification process.
Question No. 3: What else could they have done?
“If you are such a genius, what would you have done if you were FIBA?” some of you might be asking.
I do understand that FIBA’s hands were tied up to a certain level, with the SunRockers pulling out of the tournament late in preparation time. They had to act fast to find a replacement team.
There was a video earlier (which I can’t find anymore) interviewing Philippines National Team Head Coach Chot Reyes having him mention that “FIBA reached out to SBP” for a team to participate in the FIBA Asia Champions Cup. Whether who reached out to who first or however the wildcard process was completed, I felt like FIBA has other directions which they could have went with.
Hear me out and tell me when you finish reading if you think they are crazy:
OPTION No.1: Get another Japanese Team
The original slot was for the SunRockers Shibuya and they withdrew. The SunRockers had finished in the top 3 of the EABA Champions Cup (I can’t find the results anywhere though) which was the qualifier for the FIBA Asia Champions Cup.
Was FIBA able to contact the Japanese Basketball Association (JBA) for a replacement team from Japan first after the SunRockers withdrawal?
OPTION No.2: Get KGC Anyang or another South Korean Team
There were 4 teams in the EABA Champions Cup and KGC Anyang finished in 4th place. KGC Anyang might have finished last in the regional club tournament, but they were at least champions of the Korean Basketball League.
Again, you’d have to wonder if FIBA contacted the Korean Basketball Association (KBA) to get KGC Anyang who were next in line from the EABA Champions Cup or even a replacement South Korean team.
After all, this wildcard slot was still an East Asian slot.
OPTION No.3: Get the Hong Kong Eastern Long Lions
Speaking of East Asia, there’s another East Asian team that also happens to be a champion of a regional league that is recognized by FIBA!
The Hong Kong Eastern Long Lions had won the ASEAN Basketball League earlier in April so at least they qualified as a champion of something. And since it’s an East Asian slot that FIBA Asia Champions Cup were looking to fill in, it just seemed like a perfect fit to invite the Eastern Long Lions as the wildcard team.
OPTION No.4: Get Alab Pilipinas
So let’s say top three options didn’t go well for FIBA. Probably FIBA had already contacted JBA and KBA and the Eastern Long Lions and they were all unable to commit a team for the tournament.
Sticking with the ABL that used to be a qualifier, the Singapore Slingers would be second in line being the runner-ups. However, with the Slingers hosting and playing in the Merlion Cup which runs during 20-24 September, that isn’t possible.
So guess who’s finished in 3rd place!
It’s the Philippines representative team in the ASEAN Basketball League! Imagine that!
FIBA could have ended up with a team from the Philippines, while also having a decent case as to why they qualified to play in the tournament.
Question No. 4: Does any of this matter?
Not really.
The FIBA Asia Champions Cup 2017 now has 10 teams as they needed. Despite the surprise wildcard addition, life goes on. The tournament hasn’t gained enough prestige to a point where other club teams will come out crying for justice in the qualification process.
But that’s the thing. The FIBA Asia Champions Cup has so much potential.
It’s not that I’m against Chooks-To-Go Pilipinas being in the FIBA Asia Champions Cup. They are going to be a fun team and we’re going to get another Thailand vs. Philippines match up sooner than we ever expected. It’s all good.
But as a tournament that aims to be “Asia’s premier basketball club competition”, FIBA Asia Champions Cup should be more careful of moves like these that could water down the authenticity of the tournament.
Question No. 5: Should we be excited about the FIBA Asia Champions Cup 2017 anyways?
Yes.

แน่นอนว่า ไม่ว่าจะเป็นการแข่งขันบาสเกตบอลรูปแบบไหน การที่มีทีมฟิลิปปินส์อยู่ด้วย ย่อมเป็นสีสันที่เรียกได้ว่า แทบขาดไม่ได้ จึงเป็นข่าวที่ดี… แต่ในทางเดียวกัน กับสถานการณ์นี้ มันทำให้เกิดข้อสงสัยขึ้นมาหลายๆ อย่างตามมา

คำถามที่ 1: CHOOKS-TO-GO PILIPINAS คืออะไรฟะ?
นี่เป็นคำถามที่สำคัญมากที่ ผมรู้สึกว่าต้องมีการให้คำตอบที่เหมาะสมควรค่ากับการตอบอย่างจริงจัง เพราะฉะนั้น ผมอยากให้ทุกท่านได้ดูวีดีโออันนี้ ที่เรียกได้ว่า น่าจะบรรยายความเป็น “Chooks-To-Go Pilipinas” ที่ดีที่สุด:

แต่มาเข้าประเด็นจริงๆ จังๆ กันต่อดีกว่าชื่อ “CHOOKS-TO-GO PILIPINAS” มาจากส่วนประกอบสองส่วนสำคัญคือ “Chook-To-Go” และ “Pilipinas”
ไม่น่าเชื่อเนอะ… (ถุยยยยยยยย)
จากการอ้างอิงจาก wikipedia ที่เชื่อถือได้สุดๆ Chooks-To-Go (อ่านว่า ชูกส์ทูโก เป็นแฟรนไชส์ของกลุ่ม Bounty Agro Ventures, Inc. (BAVI) ในประเทศฟิลิปปินส์ โดยสินค้าที่มีคือ ไก่ย่าง และ เนื้อชนิดอื่นๆ เพื่อซื้อไปรับประทานนอกสถานที่ และเป็นกิจการขายไก่ย่างที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในประเทศฟิลิปปินส์ด้วย
“Pilipinas” (อ่านว่า พิลิพินาส) นั้น ก็ตรงๆ ตามเสียงที่อ่าน คือเป็นการบอกว่าทีมนี้คือตัวแทนของประเทศฟิลิปปินส์
ในที่นี่ Chooks-To-Go นั้นเป็นแบรนด์ที่สนับสนุนสปอนเซอร์ค่าใช้จ่ายของทีมชาติฟิลิปปินส์อยู่… ดังนั้น รวมกันทั้งหมด จึงได้ออกมาเป็นทีม Chooks-To-Go Pilipnas นั่นเอง!
ตอนนี้มีข่าวว่าทีมได้มีการดึงเอา คริสเตียน สแตนฮาร์ดิงเกอร์, คีฟเฟอร์ ราเวน่า, เจรอน เตง, เจทท์ มานูเอล, คาร์ล ไบรอัน ครูซ, และ ไบร์ท อาคูเอตี้ มาร่วมทีมแล้วเรียบร้อย
แต่ปัญหา/ความข้องใจ ที่ตามมาตอนนี้คือ Chooks-To-Go Pilipinas นั่น… มันไม่ใช่ทีมสโมสรหน่ะสิ
คำถามที่ 2: แล้วมันเป็นปัญหายังไงละฟะ?
เป็นคำถามที่ดี
อย่างแรกเลยคือ รายการ FIBA Asia Champions Cup นั้น มีการตั้งเป้าหมายเป็น “รายการแข่งขันสโมสรบาสเกตบอลระดับสูงของทวีปเอเชีย” แล้วอยู่ๆ การที่มีทีมที่ไม่ได้มีสถานะเป็น “สโมสร” บาสเกตบอลเต็มตัวนั้น ทำให้ความขลังของรายการที่พยายามปลุกปั้นขึ้นมานั้นเจือจางลงมาหน่อยๆ
การที่ทีม Chooks-To-Go Pilipinas มาร่วมการแข่งขันครั้งนี้ก็ไม่ใช่เรื่องที่แย่หรอก ยังไงทีมที่จัดมาก็เป็นทีมที่แข็งแกร่งระดับหนึ่งแน่นอน และ มีแฟนๆ ติดตามมากมายอยู่แล้ว แต่มันอาจจะทำให้เกิดเป็นตัวอย่างที่ไม่ดี และ ทำให้ความน่าเชื่อถือของรายการ FIBA Asia Champions Cup ลดลงไป
ในช่วงหลังๆ มานี้ FIBA ดูเหมือนว่าจะพยายามดันรายการ FIBA Asia Champions Cup มากเป็นพิเศษ หวังปั้นให้เป็นรายการที่เด่นขึ้น… แต่ด้วยการตัดสินใจที่ครึ่งๆ กลางๆ แบบนี้ ทำให้มนต์ขลังลดลงไป
สิ่งหนึ่งที่พวกเขาทำได้ เพื่อหลีกเลี่ยงเหตุการณ์แบบนี้ในครั้งหน้าได้คือ การนิยามคำว่า “สโมสรบาสเกตบอล” ให้ชัดเจนกว่านี้ อีกทั้ง ตั้งกระบวนการในการคัดเลือกทีมเข้าไปแข่งขันให้ชัดเจน และ มีระบบมากกว่านี้
คำถามที่ 3: แล้วมันทำไงได้บ้างละฟะในสถานการณ์แบบนี้?
“ถ้ามึงรู้เยอะนัก แล้วเป็นมึงจะทำยังไงละถ้ามึงเป็น FIBA” อาจจะเป็นคำถามที่หลายๆ คนถามอยู่
เอาจริงๆ ในสถานการณ์ตอนนั้น ก็คงมีความกดดันแล้วบีบเค้นสำหรับ FIBA พอสมควร ด้วยการที่ทีม SunRockers Shibuya ถอนตัวออกจากรายการในจังหวะแบบนี้ ทำให้ต้องเร่งรีบในการหาทีมมาทดแทน
มีวีดีโอการสัมภาษณ์โค้ชเรเยส (ที่หาไม่เจอแล้วตอนนี้) ซึ่งโค้ชเรเยสได้มีการบอกว่าทาง “FIBA ได้เป็นฝ่ายติดต่อมาหาสมาคมบาสฟิลิปปินส์เอง” เพื่อให้จัดทีมมาเล่นในรายการ FIBA Asia Champions Cup ให้ที
แต่ทั้งนี้ทั้งนั้น ไม่ว่าใครจะติดต่อใครก่อนและขั้นตอนในการตัดสินใจว่าตำแหน่ง wildcard ที่ว่างอยู่นั้นไปส่งมอบได้อย่างไรก็ช่างมันเถอะ แค่ผมรู้สึกว่า FIBA น่าจะมีทางออกที่ดีกว่านี้อยู่
ลองพิจารณาตามผมดู แล้วถ้ามันดูบ้าบอเวอร์วังอลังการ ก็เชิญคอมเมนต์แชร์ความเห็นได้หลังจากที่อ่านจบได้เลย:
ทางเลือกที่ 1: หาทีมจากญี่ปุ่นทีมอื่น
ทีมที่ถอนตัวออกไปคือทีม SunRockers Shibuya จากญี่ปุ่น ซึ่งได้โควต้ามาจากการที่ได้อันดับ 1 ใน 3 อันดับแรกจากรายการแข่ง EABA Champions Cup (ที่ตามหาผลการแข่งขันยากเหลือเกิน) ซึ่งเป็นการแข่งขันคัดเลือกเพื่อเล่นใน FIBA Asia Champions Cup
ต้องถามว่าทาง FIBA ได้ติดต่อไปกับสมาคมบาสเกตบอลญี่ปุ่นเพื่อหาทีมอื่นในประเทศมาแทนทีม SunRockers รึยัง?
ทางเลือกที่ 2: ติดต่อทีม KGC Anyang หรือหาทีมจากเกาหลีทีมอื่นๆ
ในการแข่ง EABA Champions Cup นั้น มีทั้งหมด 4 ทีม และ KGC Anyang จากเกาหลีนั้นเป็นทีมที่ได้อันดับที่ 4
KGC Anyang อาจจะเป็นบ๊วยในการแข่งขันก็จริง แต่อย่างน้อยก็เป็นถึงทีมแชมป์ลีกเกาหลี (Korean Basketball League)
ก็อีกนั้นแหละ ได้แต่สงสัยว่า ทาง FIBA ได้มีการติดต่อกับสมาคมบาสเกาหลีหรือยัง ว่า จะขอเชิญทีม KGC Anyang ที่เป็นทีมอันดับต่อไปใน EABA Champions Cup หรือถ้าไม่ได้ ก็ควรจะเป็นทีมอื่นจากประเทศเกาหลีรึเปล่า
อย่างไรก็ตาม ตำแหน่งโควตาที่หายไป มันก็ยังเป็นโควตาของทีมจาก เอเชียตะวันออก อยู่ดี
ทางเลือกที่ 3: ติดต่อทีม Hong Kong Eastern Long Lions
ว่าแต่ว่า ไหนๆ มันก็เป็นสิทธิโควตาของทีมจากเอเชียตะวันออกอยู่แล้ว… ทำไมไม่มุ่งไปสนใจอีกทีมจากเอเชียตะวันออกที่ได้แชมป์จากรายการที่ FIBA อุปถัมป์อยู่ละ?
ในช่วงเดือนเมษายน เมื่อต้นปีที่ผ่านมานั้น ทีม Hong Kong Eastern Long Lions คว้าแชมป์ในรายการ ABL ซึ่งอย่างน้อยๆ ก็แปลว่า พวกเขาก็เป็น แชมป์ อะไรซักอย่าง
ด้วยความที่รายการ FIBA Asia Champions Cup ขาดทีมจากภูมิภาคตะวันออก มันจึงดูเป็นความลงตัว ถ้าหากว่าได้ติดต่อเชิญทีม Eastern Long Lions มาเติมเต็มในส่วนนี้
ทางเลือกที่ 4: ติดต่อทีม Alab Pilipinas
อ่ะ สมมติว่าทาง FIBA ได้ลองติดต่อตาม 3 ทางเลือกตามข้างต้นแล้ว แต่ไม่ประสบผลสำเร็จ บางทีทั้งทีมจากญี่ปุ่น เกาหลี หรือ ฮ่องกง นั้น อาจจะมีเหตุผลที่ไม่สามารถส่งทีมมาร่วมแข่งขันได้เลยจริงๆ
ถ้ายังจะพยายามยึด ABL เป็นตัวเกณฑ์ในการคัดเลือก โผก็จะไปออกที่ทีมรองแชมป์ สิงคโปร์ สลิงเกอร์ส แต่ สลิงเกอร์สก็คงมาร่วมแข่งไม่ได้ เนื่องจากมีการแข่งรายการ Merlion Cup ที่จัดแข่งขันในช่วงเวลาเดียวกัน ช่วงวันที่ 20-24 กันยายน
แล้วถ้าโอกาสตกไปเป็นของอันดับที่ 3 ก็จะกลายเป็น… ทีม Alab Pilipinas จากฟิลิปปินส์ นั่นเอง!
ท้ายสุดแล้ว FIBA ก็จะได้ทีมที่มาจากฟิลิปปินส์ตามที่ต้องการ แถมยังได้ขั้นตอนการคัดเลือกที่ยังดูมีน้ำหนัก และ มีหลักการที่เชื่อถือได้
คำถามที่ 4: แล้วทั้งหมดนี้ มันส่งผลกระทบอะไรมากไหม?
ก็ไม่นะ เอาเข้าจริงๆ
ตอนนี้ FIBA Asia Champions Cup 2017 ก็มีครบ 10 ทีมตามที่ตั้งเป้าไว้แล้ว แม้ว่าการคัดเลือกทีมสุดท้ายในโควตา wildcard อาจจะดูพิสดารไปบ้าง… แต่มันก็ไม่ใช่ปัญหาที่ใหญ่โตขนาดนั้น รายการนี้ ยังไม่ได้ใหญ่โตถึงขั้นที่สโมสรอื่นๆ ที่โดนมองข้ามไปจะออกมาโวยเรื่องขั้นตอนการเลือกทีมเข้าแข่ง ณ ตอนนี้
แต่นั่นก็คือสิ่งที่ต้องระวัง เพราะรายการ FIBA Asia Champions Cup มันมีศักยภาพมากกว่านี้อีกมาก
ไม่ใช่ว่า ต่อต้านการเข้าร่วมของทีม Chooks-To-Go Pilipinas ในรายการ FIBA Asia Champions Cup หรืออะไรนะ ยังไงซะทีมนี้ต้องเป็นทีมที่ดูสนุกแน่นอน อีกทั้งยังทำให้เราได้ดูการดวลระหว่าง ฟิลิปปินส์ กับ ไทย เร็วกว่าที่คิดไว้ซะอีก มาแบบนี้ ก็เรียกได้ว่าแทบจะมีแต่ได้
แต่สำหรับรายการแข่งขันที่ตั้งเป้าเป็น”รายการแข่งขันสโมสรบาสเกตบอลระดับสูงของทวีปเอเชีย” บางที ก็อาจจะต้องระมัดระวังการตัดสินใจแบบนี้ ที่อาจจะทำให้ความน่าเชื่อถือของการแข่งขันลดลงมาบ้าง
คำถามที่ 5: แล้วรายการนี้มันยังน่าติดตามปะเนี่ย ถามจริงๆ?

Chooks to Go (sounds really stupid) should have joined the Super 8 tourney in Macau which is also happening this month. At least there you got a couple Chinese teams, TPE teams Fubon & Pauian, Chiba Jets, Seoul Thunders and SK Knights.
I agree that Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas is not a club per se, but a hastily made team that has not played in any league or tournament prior to the Champions Cup. Imagine if England were to build a “club” from various EPL teams to play in the UEFA Champions League. That isn’t exactly fair.
If the Philippines is determined to join the Champions Cup, why not send an actual club? Perhaps a PBA or PBA D-League team could join, maybe even the current champion from either league. Instead, we’re getting a selection of players, not a club. Even Thailand was decent enough to get a real club to join the Cup.
Couldn’t agree more with TK. If this tournament is meant to be participated by “actually-existing” clubs, so it is then imperative to strictly adhere to this requisite. It is very crucial to preserve the very essence of this CLUB tournament which is a hoops competition from among established professional clubs in Asia. The various options TK presented were reasonably the best discretions FIBA could have opted to. But the hoops governing body granted the wild card entry to the Philippines which in effect accorded the country a prerogative to exercise its option to choose which team it will send.
With PBA still on wraps and preparations and resources being constraining factors on club teams from other Philippine leagues like the D League, the Filsports Basketball Association, the soon-to-be inaugurated Countrywide Development League, and other commercial and semi-professional leagues, the Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas (SBP) was left with no choice but to answer the call from FIBA in lieu of Japan’s last minute withdrawal in sending a team by any means whatsoever. And the best SBP could do is to tap any of its major sponsors and, at the moment, “Chooks-to-Go” is in the best position to help out SBP’s cause.
