The 26th FIBA Asia Champions Cup will be played from 22-30 September in Chenzhou, China featuring 10 clubs from all over Asia.

The drawing ceremony was help on the 25th of August in Beijing.
Teams were drawn based on geographical locations into two groups of five teams with defending champions, China Kashgar (Xinjiang Guanghui), having the option to chose which group they want to play in.
Here are the results of the draw:
Teams will play round-robin in their own groups to determine the top 4 teams. Those 8 teams (top 4 of each group) then advance to the quarterfinals where the 1st ranked team in one group faces the 4th ranked team in the other group and the 2nd ranked team faces the 3rd ranked team from a different group. Teams will then play in a knockout format from the quarterfinals onto the finals. (Check out for more details here)
FIBA Asia Champions Cup 2017: How did the teams get here?
As a random fan looking from the outside, the structure of the qualification system of the FIBA Asia Champions Cup might still look a bit flawed and random. Each of the six subzones get one qualifying team, the hosts nation gets one qualifying team, and the three other slots were allocated according to results from FIBA Asia Champions Cup 2016. We also got an opportunity to ask a FIBA representative about the qualification process for each team and we’ll help break it all down:
- The main team of interest in our readership is the Mono Vampires (Thailand). The Vampires “were named by SEABA to represent the sub-zone as no team from this region participated in the qualifier they were asked to.”
This coincides with a rumor and a schedule earlier issued by the Basketball Association of Thailand for a SEABA Champions Cup to be held in Thailand sometime near the end of April. Since no other team from the region participated in that tournament as the qualifier, it wouldn’t come as a surprise that SEABA would grant Thailand the quota as they were willing to host the event.
The SEABA sub-zone was previously represented by the champions of the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) in 2016 (Malaysia Dragons), but the representative of FIBA did not disclose why the qualification status changed this year. Speculations revolve around the ABL’s expansion to outside of the SEABA sub-zone factoring into them no longer being the qualifier for the FIBA Asia Champions Cup.

- East Asia then got two more qualifying slots for China Kashgar’s performance in 2016 as the defending champions and also their original East Asia auto-bid. The slots were given to teams from Japan and Chinese-Taipei (Dacin Tigers), who finished 2nd and 3rd in the EABA Champions Cup held earlier in August. The Hitachi Sunrockets represented Japan in the EABA Champions Cup, but it seems like their status on participating in the FIBA Asia Champions Cup is on hold.
- As winners of their sub-zones in National Team competition, India (South Asia) and Kazakhstan (Central Asia) earned the rights to name a team to represent the sub-zone. Kazakstan named BC Astana as their representative and India named ONGC who returns for a second straight year in FIBA Asia Champions Cup.
- West Asia got two additional slots after Al-Riyadi (Lebanon) and Petrochimi (Iran) finished 2nd and 3rd , respectively last year. The WABA Champions Cup resulted in the return of the two aforementioned teams and Sareyyet Ramallah (Palestine).
- Al Ahli (United Arab Emirates) won their slot by winning the GCC Club Basketball Championship earlier in May.
FIBA Asia Champions Cup 2017: Who can we expect to see?
FIBA already has an article listed on some stars that we might be able to see here, so go check that out. For the meanwhile, the focus here will be on the players from the Mono Vampires.

Again, we contacted a FIBA representative to help us clarify on the player eligibility regulations which would answer the questions we had after seeing that list:
- The main Thai man of the hour, Tyler Lamb, is on this list. After representing the Thailand National Team in the SEA Games 2017, the Mono Vampires probably wanted to get him to play in this tournament as a local player.
Unfortunately, FIBA replied to us saying that the FIBA Asia Champions Cup follows the same rules as other FIBA sanctioned tournaments where a player is considered a local only if he acquired specific documentations (passport) confirming his nationality before the age of 16.
Therefore, if Tyler Lamb were to play for the Mono Vampires in the FIBA Asia Champions Cup, it would be as an Import.

Photo Credit: Onvisa Thewphaingarm Unfortunately, the FIBA Asia Champions Cup doesn’t have a quota for Asian or ASEAN imports as the Vampires are used to having in local competitions. FIBA Asia Champions Cup allows only two foreign imports on the Final roster. Therefore, the Vampires will have to cut at least 4 of the 6 imports listed.
- Of course, the Mono Vampires will not be sending all the players listed to Chenzhou. FIBA requires teams to send in a preliminary list of players one month before the competition starts (August 22nd was the deadline for the preliminary roster). Teams are then required to cut down to 12 players for the Final roster 2 weeks (14 days) before the start of the tournament. Along with the minimum of 4 imports being cut from the list, we’ll be seeing at least 4 local players being cut as well.
So… that pretty much wraps up what we know about the FIBA Asia Champions Cup and the Mono Vampires participation in the FIBA Asia Champions Cup so far.

รายการแข่งขัน FIBA Asia Champions Cup ครั้งที่ 26 จะจัดขึ้นตั้งแต่ช่วงวันที่ 22-30 กันยายน ที่เมืองเฉิงโจว ประเทศจีน ซึ่งเป็นรายการแข่งที่มีสโมสรจากทั่วเอเชีย 10 ทีมมาแข่งขันกันวัดความเป็นจ้าวเอเซีย
เมื่อวันที่ 25 เดือนสิงหาคมที่ผ่านมานี้ ได้มีการทำการจับฉลากแบ่งสายการแข่งขันรายการ FIBA Asia Champions Cup ที่เมืองปักกิ่ง ประเทศจีน
ทีมแต่ละทีมได้ถูกจัดแบ่งเป็นโถตามตำแหน่งทางภูมิประเทศ ก่อนที่จะถูกจับฉลากเข้ากลุ่มสองกลุ่ม โดยมีกลุ่มละ 5 ทีม ซึ่งทีมแชมป์เก่า China Kashgar หรือ Xinjiang Guanghu จะได้โอกาสในการเลือกกลุ่มที่ตนต้องการอยู่ด้วย หลังจากการจับฉลากทั้งหมด
ซึ่งผลการจับฉลากมีดังนี้:

FIBA Asia Champions Cup 2017: แต่ละทีมมาจากไหน?
ในฐานะแฟนบาสธรรมดาที่มองจากภายนอกแล้ว ระบบการคัดเลือกของการแข่งขันครั้งนี้ ยังอาจจะดูงงๆ และ สุ่มๆ
อย่างแรก ในแต่ละ sub-zone จะมีโควตาอย่างน้อย 1 ตำแหน่งแล้ว ก็เป็น 6 ตำแหน่ง เจ้าภาพได้แน่ๆ แล้วอีก 1 ตำแหน่ง ส่วนอีก 3 ตำแหน่งสุดท้าย วัดจากผลงานของทีมในรอบการแข่งขันที่ผ่านมา (ทีมที่ได้อันดับที่ 1, 2, 3 ในรายการแข่งรอบที่ผ่านมา จะเพิ่มตำแหน่งให้กับ sub-zone ตัวเอง 1 ที่)
ทางเราได้สอบถามกับเจ้าหน้าที่ FIBA คนหนึ่ง เพื่อให้เข้าใจถึงขั้นตอนในการคัดเลือกของแต่ละทีม ในแต่ละ sub-zone มา เพื่อให้เข้าใจอย่างถ่องแท้มากขึ้น:
- แน่นอนว่า ทีมที่ผู้อ่านน่าจะเข้าสนใจมากที่สุด คงไม่พ้นทีม โมโน แวมไพร์ (ไทย) จากการที่ได้ถามมา ก็คือ ทีมโมโน แวมไพร์ นี้ ได้รับการแต่งตั้งจาก SEABA เป็นตัวแทนภูมิภาค เนื่องจากไม่มีทีมอื่นในภูมิภาคนี้ไปร่วมในการแข่งขันคัดเลือกประจำภูมิภาคตามที่กำหนดไว้
ตรงนี้ ก็ค่อนข้างสอดคล้องกับข่าวลือที่ได้ยินมา และ ตารางการแข่งขันที่ทางสมาคมบาสเกตบอลแห่งประเทศไทยได้มีการทำไว้เมื่อต้นปีที่ผ่าน โดยมีการกำหนดว่าประเทศไทยได้เป็นเจ้าภาพในการจัดการแข่งขัน SEABA Champions Cup ช่วงปลายเดือนเมษายน แต่เนื่องจากที่ไม่มีทีมอื่นๆ ในภูมิภาคมาร่วมการแข่งขันครั้งนั้น เลยน่าจะเป็นเหตุให้ SEABA ยกให้ไทยแต่งตั้งทีมที่จะเป็นตัวแทน sub-zone ไปแข่งในครั้งนี้
สำหรับรายการนี้ ในปีที่ผ่านมา ตัวแทนนั้น เป็นทีม มาเลเซีย ดรากอนส์ ที่ได้สิทธิจากการเป็นแชมป์รายการ ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) ในกรณีนี้ ทาง FIBA ไม่ได้แจ้งมาถึงสาเหตุที่มีการเปลี่ยนขั้นตอนในการได้ตำแหน่งตัวแทน sub-zone แต่คาดว่า เกี่ยวข้องกับการที่ ABL มีการขยายฐานการแข่งออกไปนอกภูมิภาคด้วยPhoto Credit: FIBA - ทีมแชมป์เก่า China Kashgar (หรือ Xinjiang Flying Tigers) กลับมาร่วมแข่งอีกครั้งในฐานะทีมจากชาติเจ้าภาพ ประเทศจีน
- สำหรับภูมิภาค เอเชีย ตะวันออกนั้น ได้ตำแหน่งเพิ่ม 2 ที่ โดย 1 ที่คือตำแหน่งประจำภูมิภาค แล้วเสริมด้วย ตำแหน่งที่ได้มาจากผลงานที่ China Kashgar คว้าแชมป์มาได้เมื่อปีที่ผ่านมา ตำแหน่งสองตำแหน่งนี้ ได้จัดไปให้กับ ทีมจากญี่ปุ่น และ ทีมจากไต้หวัน (Dacin Tigers) ซึ่งได้อันดับที่ 2 และ 3 ในรายการแข่งขันรอบคัดเลือกประจำภูมิภาค EABA Champions Cup เมื่อต้นเดือนสิงหาคมที่ผ่านมา ในรายการ EABA Champions Cup นั้น ทีมตัวแทนจาก ญี่ปุ่นเป็นทีม Hitachi Sunrockets แต่ตอนนี้สถานภาพในการมาเข้าร่วมแข่งขันครั้งนี้ ดูจะไม่ลงตัวเท่าไหร่นัก
- ในฐานะที่เป็นแชมป์ในการแข่งขันระดับทีมชาติของแต่ละภูมิภาคนั้น ประเทศอินเดีย (เอเชียใต้) และ คาซักสถาน (เอเชียกลาง) ได้สิทธิในการแต่งตั้งทีมสโมสรที่จะมาเป็นตัวแทนในรายการแข่งขันครั้งนี้ คาซีดสถานได้ส่งทีม BC Astana ส่วนทางอินเดียส่งทีม ONGC ซึ่งกลับมาร่วมแข่งรายการนี้ เป็นครั้งที่สองติดต่อกัน
- ส่วนของเอเชียตะวันตกนั้น นอกจาก 1 ตำแหน่งประจำภูมิภาค ก็ได้เพิ่มอีก 2 ตำแหน่ง จากผลงานของทีม Al-Riyadi (เลบานอน) และ Petrochimi (อิหร่าน) ที่คว้าอันดับที่ 2 และ 3 ในการแข่งขัน FIBA Asia Champions Cup เมื่อปีที่ผ่าน

จริงๆ ทาง FIBA ก็เริ่มมี บทความ ว่าด้วยผู้เล่นเด่นๆ ที่เราน่าจะได้เห็นในรายการนี้แล้ว ก็ลองไปอ่านดูได้ ระหว่างนี้ เรามาสนใจกับผู้เล่นของ โมโน แวมไพร์ กันดีกว่า
สำหรับรายชื่อผู้เล่นชุดเบื้องต้นของ โมโน แวมไพร์ นั้น มีการปล่อยหลุดออกมา โดยมี 20 คนดังนี้

เราได้ติดต่อไปทาง FIBA อีกครั้ง เพื่อช่วยให้เราเข้าใจเรื่องเงื่อนไขตัวผู้เล่นที่จะส่งแข่งในรายการนี้มากขึ้น โดยคำตอบก็ช่วยให้กระจ่างมากขึ้นดังนี้:
- หนุ่มสุดฮอตตอนนี้ ไทเลอร์ แลมป์ ก็มีชื่อติดโผมาแบบเหนือความคาดหมาย หลังจากที่ได้รับใช้ชาติในรายการ SEA Games 2017 มาแล้ว ทางโมโน แวมไพร์ คงอยากได้มาใช้งานเป็นผู้เล่นในทีมกับรายการ FIBA Asia Champions Cup ครั้งนี้
แต่ก็เป็นเรื่องน่าเสียดายที่ทาง FIBA ตอบเรามาว่า FIBA Asia Champions Cup ใช้กฏในการพิจารณาตัวผู้เล่น Local เหมือนกับรายการแข่งทีมชาติทั่วไป คือ ต้องมีเอกสารยืนยันสัญชาติ (ซึ่งตามปกติใช้หนังสือเดินทาง) ก่อนอายุ 16 ปี
เพราะฉะนั้น ถ้า ไทเลอร์ แลมป์ จะเล่นให้กับ โมโน แวมไพร์ ในรายการแข่งขันครั้งนี้จริงๆ ก็ต้องเล่นในบทของผู้เล่น ImportPhoto Credit: Onvisa Thewphaingarm (ABL) - นอกจาก แลมป์ แล้ว จะมีผู้เล่นอีก 5 คนที่ตกในเงื่อนไขเป็นผู้เล่น Import คือ เรจจี้ จอห์นสัน, ไมค์ ซิงเกิลแทรี่, แอนโธนี่ แมคเคลน, เจสัน บริกแมน, และ พอล ซามาร์
Photo Credit: Onvisa Thewphaingarm น่าเสียดายที่ FIBA Asia Champions Cup ไม่มีโควตาสำหรับ Asian/ASEAN Import ซึ่งเป็นระบบที่ โมโน แวมไพร์ ชินกับในการแข่งขันในประเทศที่แข่งในปีที่ผ่านๆ มา จากการสอบถามแล้ว รายการนี้มีโควตาให้ผู้เล่นต่างชาติเพียงทีมละ 2 คนเท่านั้น เพราะฉะนั้น จากผู้เล่นทั้งหมด 6 คนนี้ คงจะต้องตัดออกอย่างน้อยๆ ก็ 4 คน
- แน่นอนว่า ทาง โมโน แวมไพร์ เองก็คงไม่สามารถส่งผู้เล่นทั้ง 20 คนนี้ ไปแข่งที่ เฉิงโจว ได้แน่นอนอยู่แล้ว ทาง FIBA มีเงื่อนไขให้แต่ละทีมมีการส่งรายชื่อเบื้องต้น อย่างมาก 24 คนก่อนการแข่งขัน 1 เดือน (ซึ่งหมดเขตการส่งรายชื่อเมื่อวันที่ 22 สิงหาคมที่ผ่านมา) จากนั้น แต่ละทีมต้องไปตัดรายชื่อออกเหลือเพียง 12 คนเพื่อส่งรายชื่อสุดท้ายไปอีกครั้ง ก่อนแข่งขัน 2 สัปดาห์ หรือ 14 วัน ดังนั้น นอกจากรายชื่อผู้เล่นต่างชาติที่ต้องตัดอย่างน้อย 4 คนแล้ว ต้องมีการตัดผู้เล่นคนไทยอีก 4 คนเป็นอย่างน้อยด้วย
ก็… รู้กันแค่นี้แหละครับ สำหรับรายการ FIBA Asia Champions Cup ตอนนี้ และการเข้าร่วมแข่งขันของทางโมโน แวมไพร์
