This will be the third consecutive year that NBL Asia has hosted the Seri Mutiara Champions Cup and the cast of participating teams just seems to keep getting better and better as the years pass by.

Just to put in perspective how far the Seri Mutiara Champions Cup has come along:
In 2015, the inaugural tournament had 4 local Malaysian teams, 1 Indonesian Team, and 1 Philippines team.
In 2016, they went out and got a team from China, Chinese-Taipei, Syria, Austrailia, and Croatia in addition to a returning team from the Philippines and 2 local Malaysian squads. While the various nations were a nice touch an improvements, the quality of the teams might have not been as high as desired.
This year, the Seri Mutiara Champions Cup will be hosting 8 teams from China, Korea, Chinese-Taipei, Nigeria, and Japan as well as the lone local Malaysian team. And what a cast they have drawn up indeed.
Before we check out the teams, let’s brief on how the Seri Mutiara Champions Cup will actually go down.
The games will be held at MABA Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from September 12-17. This seems like a perfect timing with the basketball scene in Malaysia just coming off hosting the SEA Games (August 20-26). There will be on-court activities that fans can join in on, Slam Dunk and Three-Point shooting competitions, and a carnival for the whole family to enjoy!
Teams will be divided into two groups of 4 and the top two teams from each group will play the playoff round.
Good stuff.
Let’s move on to the participating teams.
NS Matrix (Malaysia)
NS Matrix is back this year (of course, they are) as the lone Malaysian representative in the pool. The team was only established back in 2015, but has risen up fast in the Malaysian basketball scene. The Agong Cup 2016 Champions were also the runner ups in last year’s Seri Mutiara Champions Cup.
According to the press release, NS Matrix will be featuring 5 National Team players (from the SEA Games squad) which most likely are Kuek Tian Yuan, Wong Yi Hou, Ivan Yeo, Teo Kok Hou, and Ting Chun Hong. In addition, they will also be bolstering the roster with 3 American Imports from the NBA G-League team, the Texas Legends.
Guangzhou Securities Long Lions (China)
The Long Lions are back to defend their Seri Mutiara Champions Cup title!
Last year they were led by Ryan Boatright, Alex Kirk, and Samad Nikkhah Bahrami along with young rising star Ziming Fan. Their success didn’t carry on to the CBA season however, where they finished 19th in the table with a 7-31 record.
In their quest to defend the Seri Mutiara Champions Cup title and improve their CBA record, the Long Lions have started by signing former North Carolina Tarheel star and NBA player Tyler Hansbrough. If anything, getting a chance to watch Psycho-T in action is definitely going to be worthwhile.
Beijing Fly Dragons (China)
The other Chinese team in the tournament will be packing quite some star power as well! The Beijing Fly Dragons managed to get the CBA legend, Stephon Marbury, to join their team after his break up with the Beijing Ducks. It’s hard to imagine a player of Marbury’s caliber playing in Malaysia, but we’ve seen Jimmer Fredette play in Singapore (and might see him again this year) so seems like anything’s possible nowadays.
According to the press release, Marbury will be joined by Shavlik Randolph who was the CBA scoring champion in 2013.
The Fly Dragons will need all the firepower they can get after finishing last CBA season with a 9-29 record (17th). A bright spot in their line up was probably 33-year-old, Chin-Min-Yang, who played in several squads of the Chinese-Taipei National Team.
Fubon Braves (Chinese-Taipei)
Speaking of Chinese-Taipei basketball, it will be the Fubon Braves taking the spot from the Dacin Tigers this year.
The Braves might not have any names in the current Chinese-Taipei National Team playing in FIBA Asia Championship 2017, but they do have so recognisable names nonetheless. Joseph Lin is widely known more as NBA star Jeremy Lin’s brother, but Joseph holds his own in the Taiwan SBL as well. Lin is a featured scorer on this team and was an All-Star last season.
Also on the team are Jet Chang (who played as an Asian Import in the PBA for Kia) and TJ Burke (an up-and-coming big man).
It was mentioned in the Press Release that the Braves will also have Earl Barron, a 35-year-old NBA veteran.
Link Tochigi Brex (Japan)
Link Tochigi Brex are certainly one of the top clubs in the Japanese B-League, most recently winning the title after a 50-15 record season.
The team has one of the most recognisable players in Japanese basketball history (aside from Sakuragi Hanamichi and all those other Manga characters) in Yuta Tabuse, the first Japanese player to ever play in the NBA.
For all of his stardom, aged-veteran Tabuse isn’t carrying Link Tochigi Brex alone. He has plenty of help from Japanese National Team regulars Kosuke Takeuchi and Takatoshi Furukawa, both of whom are playing for Japan in the FIBA Asia Cup 2017.
Changwon LG Sakers (Korea)
Wrapping up the oriental teams in the tournament are the LG Sakers from South Korea.
The Sakers finished the season in the bottom half of the table for the second straight year with 23-31 record.
While they have the services of Korean National Team star Kim Jongkyu, the Sakers might need more to keep up with the other teams in the tournament.
KK Split (Croatia)
Last year, the Seri Mutiara Champions Cup were able to draw in a Croatian team: Old Star Zagreb. But to be honest, that team was more “old” than “star” and couldn’t make their way to the Finals.
This year, it will be KK Split to hail from the Far North. KK Split finished in 2nd place of the Croatian A-1 Liga, but dropped out of the playoffs in the Semi-Finals.
Split has had their share of historical moments, most notably a Euroleague three-pear from 1988-1990. Those are days in the past and now KK Split has on recently began rising back to the top of the group once again.
The team is young, led by 4 rising prospects who highlight the team. Henrik Sirko (24) is a premier scorer on the team (12.4 PPG) who also starred on the U-20 Croatian National Team. Goran Filipovic (20) and Josip Jukic (20) are also key contributors to the team who played on youth teams in the international level. 19-year-old point guard Mate Kalajzic might even be the most interesting prospect in the group.
Kano Pillars (Nigeria)
I could try to write something as if I knew who the Kano Pillars actually are, but I’ll save us all some time and admit to knowing nothing.
According to the Press Release (thank god for the press release), the Pillars are known as the current champions of the Nigerian Premier Basketball League (NPBL) and finished 4th in the recent African Continental Club Championships. Abubakar Usman is a shooting guard for the team who is the ‘best 12 player’ in the whole of Africa. Another player is Stanley Gumut, a shooting guard who is one of two players in Nigeria to be called up for the 2016 Olympic team try-outs.
I seriously just copied all of that from the Press Release because I really don’t know a thing about African basketball. But hey! Getting a legit team from Africa to come over and play in the tournament should already be considered a success in itself already.

ในปีนี้ รายการ Seri Mutiara Champions Cup ได้ยกระดับขึ้นไปอีก โดยมี 8 ทีมจากทั้ง จีน เกาหลี ไต้หวัน ไนจีเรียน ญี่ปุ่น และ มาเลเซีย เป็นกลุ่มทีมที่น่าสนใจจริงๆ

ปีนี้ ทีม NS Matrix ก็กลับมาอีกครั้ง (ก็แน่แหละ เจ้าของทีมก็เป็นเข้าภาพจัดการแข่งขันเช่นเดียวกัน) ซึ่งเป็นทีมเดียวจากมาเลเซียในการแข่งขันครั้งนี้ ทีมนี้เพิ่งจัดตั้งขึ้นเมื่อปี 2015 ก็จริง แต่ก็ก้าวขึ้นมาเป็นทีมชั้นนำของประเทศได้อย่างรวดเร็ว เป็นทั้งแชมป์ถ้วยอากง (รายการที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในมาเลเซีย) อีกทั้งยังเป็นทีมรองแชมป์รายการ Seri Mutiara Champions Cup ปีที่แล้วอีกด้วย
จากรายงานแถลงข่าว ทีม NS Matrix จะมีผู้เล่นจากชุดทีมชาติมาเลเซียทั้งหมด 5 คน ซึ่งก็ไม่น้าพ้น เคว็ก เทียน ยวน, หว่อง ยี ฮาว, ไอแวน โย, และ เทโอ ก๊ก ฮาว นอกจากนี้แล้ว ทีมนี้จะยังมีการเสริมทัพด้วย 3 อิมพอร์ทจากทีม Texas Legends จาก NBA G-League
Guangzhou Securities Long Lions (จีน)
ทีม ลอง ไลออนส์ จาก กว่างโจว จะกลับมาป้องกันแชมป์อีกครั้ง ใน Seri Mutiara Champions Cup!
ปีที่แล้ว กว่างโจว ขนสตาร์ดังมา ทั้ง ไรอัน โบทไรท์, อเล็กซ์ เคิร์ก, และ นิกกา บารามี่ (ทีมชาติอิหร่าน) อักทั้งดาวรุ่งทีมชาติจีนอย่าง ซีมิง ฟาน แม้จะได้แชมป์รายการนี้ แต่ ผลงานใน CBA กลับไม่สามารถประสบความสำเร็จคล้อยตามกันเท่าไหร่ โดยจบที่สถิติชนะ 7 แพ้ 31 เป็นอันดับที่ 19 ในตาราง

ทีม ฟลาย ดรากอนส์ จาก ปักกิ่ง นั้นไปคว้าตัวยอดตำนานบาสจีนอย่าง สเตฟอน มาร์บิวรี่ มาได้ หลังจากที่เข้าตัวแยกทางกับทีมที่อยู่ด้วยกันมานานอย่าง เบย์จิง ดั๊กส์ (หรือทีม เป็ดปักกิ่ง นั่นเอง…)
เอาจริงๆ ก็ไม่เคยนึกไม่เคยฝันว่าจะมีผู้เล่นระดับ สเตฟอน มาร์บิวรี่ มาแข่งขันจริงๆ จังๆ ที่มาเลเซีย แต่หลังๆ มานี้ เราก็ได้เห็นอย่าง จิมเมอร์ ฟรีเดด มาเล่นที่สิงคโปร์แล้ว (และปีนี้ก็น่าจะมาอีกครั้ง เพราะฉะนั้น อะไรก็เกิดขึ้นได้จริงๆ
จากการรายงานแถลงข่าวนั้น มาร์บิวรี่ จะร่วมทีมกับ แชฟลิก แรนดอล์ฟ อีกคน ซึ่งเคยเป็นคนที่ทำแต้มสูงสุดใน CBA เมื่อปี 2013
ทีมมังกรบินทีมนี้ ต้องเสริมทัพให้แกร่งที่สุดเท่าที่จะทำได้ ด้วยสถิติใน CBA เพียงชนะ 9 แพ้ 29 จบเป็นอันดับที่ 17 โดยมีคนที่เล่นได้อย่างโดดเด่น คือ ชิน มิน หยาง ที่ติดทีมชาติไต้หวันมาหลายครั้ง

ว่าแล้ว พูดถึงบาสไต้หวัน ปีนี้ ก็มีทีมจากไต้หวันมาร่วมแข่งอีกครั้ง โดยจะเป็นทีม ฟูบอน เบรฟส์ มาแทนที่ทีม ต้าฉิน ไทเกอร์ส จากปีที่ผ่านมา
ทีมฟูบอนนี้ อาจจะไม่มีผู้เล่นทีมชาติไต้หวันที่กำลังแข่งอยู่รายการ FIBA Asia Championship 2017 แต่ก็มีนักกีฬาชื่อดังหลายคนเหมือนกัน หนึ่งในนั้น คือ โจเซฟ ลิน ที่คนอาจจะรู้จักในฐานะน้องชายของสตาร์ดัง เจอรามี่ ลิน แต่ สำหรับโจเซฟ เองก็เป็นสตาร์ของทีมนี้ ถึงขั้นติดทีม ออลสตาร์ ลีกไต้หวันด้วย
ในทีมยังมี เจ็ท ชาง ที่เคยเล่นเป็นผู้เล่นเอเชียอิมพอร์ทใน PBA กับ ทีเจ เบิร์ก ที่เป็นตัววงในดาวรุ่งของไต้หวันอีกคน
ในรายงานแถลงข่าว ยังบอกอีกด้วยว่า ทีมนี้ จะมีเสริมทัพด้วยอดีตผู้เล่น NBA วัย 35 ปี เอิร์ล บารอน อีกคน

ในทีมนี้ จะมีผู้เล่นที่ถือได้ว่า คุ้นชื่อมากที่สุดสำหรับวงการบาสญี่ปุ่น (ไม่นับ ซากุรางิ ฮานามิจิ หรือ พวกตัวละครในมังงะ อื่นๆ…) คือ ยูตะ ทาบูเซะ ผู้เล่นชาวญี่ปุ่นคนแรกที่ได้ก้าวไปเล่นใน NBA
แต่แม้จะเป็นสตาร์ดัง (ที่เริ่มโรยราแล้ว) อย่าง ทาบูเซะ ก็ไม่ได้แบกทีมคนเดียว โดยมีดารางดังจากทีมชาติทั้ง โคสุเกะ ทาเคอุจิ และ ทาคาโทชิ ฟุรุคาว่า ซึ่งทั้งสองคนก็เล่นอยู่ในรายการชิงแชมป์เอเชียตอนนี้ด้วย
Changwon LG Sakers (เกาหลี)
ทีมสุดท้ายจากกลุ่มประเทศในเอเชีย ก็คือ ทีม แอลจี เซเกอร์ส จาก เกาหลี
ปีที่ผ่านมา เซเกอร์ จบอยู่ในครึ่งล่างของตารางจัดอันดับใน KBL เป็นฤดูกาลที่สองติดต่อกันด้วยสถิติชนะ 23 แพ้ 31 เกม
ตอนนี้ทีมมีดาวเด่นของทีมชาติอย่าง คิม จอง คิว อยู่ก็จริง แต่คงต้องมีการเสริมทัพเพิ่ม หากจะต่อกรได้อย่างสูสีกับทีมอื่นๆ ในรายการนี้
KK Split (โครเอเชีย)
ในปีที่ผ่านมานั้น รายการ Seri Mutiara Champions Cup ก็ถือว่าสร้างความฮือฮาไม่น้อยด้วยการเอาทีมมาจากทวีปยูโรบ คือ Old Star Zagreb มาร่วมแข่งด้วย แต่ก็อาจจะน่าผิดหวังหน่อย ด้วยความที่ทีมออกจะดู โอล์ด (แก่) มากกว่า สตาร์…
ในปีนี้ จะเป็นทีม KK Split มาแทน ซึ่ง KK Split นี้ก็เป็นถึงทีมที่มีสถิติเป็นอันดับ 2 ในลีก A-1 Liga แต่ตกรอบเพลย์ออฟในการแข่งขันรอบรองชนะเลิศไปซะก่อน
Split เป็นทีมที่มีประวัติศาสตร์ที่รุ่งโรจน์อยู่ โดยเฉพาะช่วงที่คว้าแชมป์ Euroleague 3 สมัยติดในปี 1988-1990 ตอนนี้ วันเวลาเหล่านั้นเป็นเพียงแค่อดีต และ Split ก็เพิ่งเริ่มกลับขึ้นมาสู้จุดสูงสุดของวงการในประเทศเมื่อเร็วๆ นี้เท่านั้น

Kano Pillars (ไนจีเรีย)
จริงๆ ถ้าจะให้พยายาม ก็คงพอปั้นเขียนอะไรขึ้นมาให้เหมือนรู้ว่า คาโน่ พิลเลอร์ส คือทีมอะไรยังไงได้… แต่ไม่อยากหลอกลวงอะไรมากกว่านี้ แล้วยอมรับกันตรงๆ ว่า เออ ไม่รู้จักอะไรเลยเกี่ยวกับทีมนี้จริงๆ 55555
จากการรายงานแถงข่าว (ต้องขอบคุณที่มีรายงานแถลงข่าวจริงๆ) ทีมนี้เป็นแชมป์ล่าสุดประจำรายการแข่งขัน Nigerian Premier Basketball League (NPBL) และเป็นอันดับที่ 4 ในรายการแข่งขัน African Continental Club Championships อีกด้วย ผู้เล่นที่น่าจับตามองคือ อาบูบาการ์ อุสมาน ที่เป็นชูตติ้งการ์ดของทีม และเป็นหนึ่งในผู้เล่นที่ดีที่สุดในทวีปแอฟฟริกา นอกจากนี้ ยังมีผู้เล่นอีกคนคือ สแตนลี่ กามุต ที่ถูกเรียกไปคัดตัวทีมชาติไนจีเรีย สำหรับ ทีมโอลิมปิก 2016 ด้วย
…ทั้งนี้ แปลตรงๆ มาจากรายงานแถลงข่าวเลย เพราะ ไม่รู้อะไรเกี่ยวกับวงการบาสแอฟริกาเลยแม้แต่นิดเดียว 555 แต่การที่มีทีมจริงๆ จังๆ จากแอฟริกามาร่วมแข่งขันนี่ ก็ถือได้ว่า เป็นความสำเร็จของรายการนี้ พอสมควรแล้วแหละ
