Tim Lewis was fired from his role as the Thailand National Team Head Coach and we got a chance to talk to him to understand why.

I was shocked when I heard of the rumor, which says a lot about the magnitude of the topic. It seemed too out of the blue. Too sudden. There were no signs to warn us that this was about to happen.
Even as a rumor, it was so laughably preposterous.
So when I heard that Tim Lewis was out as the Head Coach of the Thailand National Team, I chuckled a little and decided to check up on how he was doing.
I was sort of expecting a “Weather really sucks right now” or “Looking forward to start practice soon”, but the actual answered caught me off guard.
Tim Lewis came into the Thailand Basketball Scene as the Head Coach of the Men’s National Team around April 2016. His track record was new to Thailand basketball. It was all worth looking forward to and, at the time, it looked like it might have sparked the next chapter of Thailand basketball.
He made quite an impression when we first got to meet before the first practice of the Thailand National Team in preparation for the upcoming SEABA Stankovic Cup 2016. He made it clear to the coaching staff what sort of team he was trying to build. He had a plan and he explained step by step what they would need to achieve their ultimate goal.
It was obvious from the start that Tim Lewis was good at building a foundation and setting up a program. He was detailed, he had principles, and he kept order. Ask anyone who had the chance to work with him and you will most likely get similar comments.
Under Lewis’ coaching, the Thailand National Team won Silver in the SEABA Stankovic Cup and qualified for the FIBA Asia Challenge 2016 in Iran. In the FIBA Asia Challenge, they were unable to secure a win after playing 5 games. The final major test for Lewis and the Thailand National Team together was at the SEABA Championship where they won the Bronze with a 4-2 record.
Even through some head-scratching moments, even through the relatively less successful campaigns on paper… the termination of Tim Lewis’ contract as the National Team Head Coach just seemed too irrational and out of the blue.
Even Lewis himself said that there were no signs leading up to the termination whatsoever. Despite ending up with only a Bronze at the SEABA Championship, he described that there was a mutual optimistic feeling from all sides involved. He left back to the United States shortly after the tournament and there were no updates pointing towards a possibility of him being fired.
That was up until only approximately 10 minutes before he was about to fly over to Thailand, when he got a call from Douglas Marty at the airport.
Marty is a good friend of Tim Lewis who was now coaching for the Mono Vampires in Thailand and was also Lewis’ assistance coach in the past tournament.
“I don’t know how to tell you this,” Lewis recalls Marty telling him. “but I think they are about to fire you.”
Lewis laughed it off considering how absurd the idea was and the lack of any signals leading to that conclusion but the thought lingered in his head.
“Imagine being on a 25-hour flight not being sure of what was waiting for you.”
When he landed, Lewis was picked up and then taken to a McDonald’s to meet a representative from the board of Mono Group. Even though Lewis’ contract was to be the Thailand National Team Head Coach, it was owned by Mono Group who were there to meet Lewis. The Mono Group is a large influential party in the Thailand Basketball scene owning two teams (Mono Vampires & Mono Thewphaingarm) and consistently funding the local leagues and Men’s National activities.
“What’s going on?” Lewis recalls asking.
“I’m firing you.”
Lewis then said that it was explained to him that this was “purely a chairman’s decision”. For him however, that was not going to cut it. There were no signs of any displeasure so far nor were there communications on any areas which they were unpleased at with him. It was only natural to ask for the criteria on which he was being terminated for. In his mind, it was a fair question that should be directly answered.
“Performance” was the first answer he received.
Lewis was told that they weren’t impressed with the team’s performance in the FIBA Asia Challenge in Iran. Then he was told that they weren’t impressed with the recent loss to Indonesia in the SEABA Championship.
Going winless in the FIBA Asia Challenge certainly wasn’t ideal, but it was the first time playing against Asian-level competition for most of the young squad. Despite being unable to log a win, many deemed it as a successful experience gainining trip for the group. There were many that were left impressed at how Thailand were able to push Japan for a half and how they almost beat Qatar.
The loss to Indonesia in the SEABA Championship surely hurt, but you can’t forget that Indonesia played the same core of players that had won Silver in the SEA Games in 2015. Was it really that disappointing that Thailand lost by only one point on a gutsy shot?
So when “Performance” was raised as the criterion for his contract termination, the inevitable question I had to ask was “What sort of performance were they expecting?”.
After the FIBA Asia Challenge 2016, Lewis recalls meetings with the Basketball Association of Thailand (BSAT) and Mono concerning the expectations of the upcoming events that the Men’s National Team would be participating in. Lewis claims that there was a mutual agreement among all sides that their main priority would be on the SEA Games and that they wouldn’t be too focused on the SEABA Championship. It was understood that in the SEABA Championship they would be holding out some cards for the SEA Games, that they would be trying out some newer and younger players, and that they wouldn’t be attempting to call up any of the Thai-American players yet.
With those understandings in place, Lewis had to question why performance was an issue when he hadn’t under-performed according to expectations. On the contrary, Lewis felt that the Thailand National Team had made much progress over the year. He cites the development of younger players in the national team program, the increased level of professionalism of the players, and he also refers to some FIBA officials that have expressed their pleasure at the improvement of the Thailand National Team.
After questioning the “Performance” criterion of his termination, Lewis recalls that he was then told that they felt he was “unprepared” going into the SEABA Championship.
Earlier this year, the Thailand Basketball Super League Finals (TBSL) went to 5 games and ended on the 5th of April. Players were then unavailable during the Thai New Years holiday for another week. By the time that the entire team was ready, the National Team was left with only about 2 weeks left to prepare for the tournament. That’s less than ideal time to prepare an international tournament contender, moreover one depending on a core of young players.
Lewis says that the National Team will be having trouble in the same situation again heading into the SEA Games. With the Thailand Basketball League (TBL) expected to drag on to 5 games once again, that should leave the National Team around one month to prepare.
Lewis points out that he could only prepare up to a certain point, but it would have to be a combined effort from all sides involved.
“If you really value the National Team, we have to sit down, settle a calendar, and figure it out.” He says.
While the domestic leagues do have their benefits of being a platform for players to gain experience, it has also gone in the way of National Team preparations as well. Not only in terms of scheduling, but in terms of putting players in the roles that they would be playing on the National Team.
Lewis mentions that the National Team has had two situations in close games where they weren’t able to convert, namely against Indonesia (SEABA Championship) and Qatar (FIBA Asia Challenge). Because of the way the league is set up, Thai players rarely get a chance to play a major role in crunch time for their teams. Therefore, when it comes time for them to play in clutch situations on the national team, it would be unfair to expect that they would be used to be in that scenario.
Lewis’ point was that he felt it was unfair to place the blame on how Thailand was unprepared going into these tournaments on him when it is in coordination between all sides (BSAT, TBL) that forced his hand into a limited amount of resources.
Lewis also says that the board viewed him taking a “vacation” after the SEABA Championship as unnecessary. According to him however, the trip was a part of his contract where he would get a certain amount of flights to return to the United States of America.
A couple of other issues were raised up as criteria for Lewis’ termination, but he felt that the one which offended him the most was the “handling of the bonus incentives” claiming that he was “trying to take up more of the bonus money”.
According to several sources, the Thailand National Team was awarded with a certain amount of bonus incentives after the SEABA Championship. It was then announced and agreed that as the Head Coach, Lewis would be the one to decide how the incentives would be allocated to whom.
According to Lewis, he distributed the bonus incentives based on how player’s and staff’s contribution to the National Team. He mentioned that he gave players with lesser roles on the team a smaller cut than players with bigger roles, not only to reward the stars but to push the other players to step up as well. Staffs that scarcely came into practice were given less than those who came in every day.
Lewis recalls being told that it was “not the Mono way”.
Over our phone call, Lewis told me that there were rumors going around that it was he who decided to resign and not that he was terminated.
“That’s the last thing I’d want to do with the players.” He continues. “We’ve made progress despite not having played the same team in two tournaments.”
“FIBA officials have been calling me and asking me about the situation.”
“I’ve always said that this was going to be 4-year to 5-year process at the very least.”
It had been approximately 2 weeks since he had been fired, but I could still feel the frustration in his voice. Maybe a part of it was the manner of how the situation had unraveled, but I think he also felt there was a lot more he could have contributed to the Thailand basketball program.
After going through all the details of how he was terminated and why, there was a silent pause between myself and Lewis over the phone.
“I feel bad but in the end, it’s not about me.” Lewis says. “Coaches come and coaches go. It’s normal.”
“But it’s the people and the players that are going to be losing out.”
We discussed a little more about the future ahead of Thailand basketball. Lewis hung up after our lengthy conversation and his words continued to ring in my head.
It’s certainly a big blow for Lewis’ coaching career after getting let go so suddenly, but it probably won’t be hard for him to get back into the game soon. As a matter of fact, he was calling me from the airport where he says he was on his way to discuss about potential options at the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. Not only that, sources say that he might take on a consulting role for the Talk N’ Text Katropa in the PBA later as well.
Coach come and coaches go.
It’s not a pretty situation for the Thailand National Team in the short term. They are currently without a National Team Head Coach for a tournament that is a month and a half away. It is speculated that Douglas Marty will be taking on the position, but that’s a complicated situation on itself. You have to remember that Lewis was a big reason that Marty came to coach in Thailand in the first place.
No matter who will be taking up the Head Coach position, the players will have to be adjusting on the fly within a limited timeframe. With contenders like the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore already ahead in preparations, it’s going to be an uphill battle for Thailand in the SEA Games.
Considering where Thailand was two years ago in SEA Games 2015, this all seems like quite a step back. All the momentum that was gained last year is now out of the window and Thailand is back at square one.
It’s the people and the players that are going to be losing out.

เมื่อเร็วๆ นี้ ทิม ลูอิส โค้ชทีมบาสเกตบอลชายทีมชาติไทยได้ถูกปลดประจำการอย่างกระทันหัน แล้วเราก็ได้โอกาสที่จะได้นั่งพูดคุยกับเขา เพื่อให้เข้าใจถึงเหตุผลในการไล่ออกครั้งนี้มากขึ้น
ตอนที่ผมได้ยินข่าวลือ ก็ยังช็อคพอสมควร ซึ่งนั่นก็แสดงให้เห็นว่า มันเป็นประเด็นที่ใหญ่โตขนาดไหน ที่แค่ข่าวลือก็ทำเอาสะท้านได้ มันดูเป็นเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นแบบไม่มีปี่ไม่มีขลุ่ยเกินไปหน่อย ที่ผ่านมา มันไม่มีสัญญาณใดๆ ทั้งสิ้นที่นำมาถึงจุดๆ นี้ได้
แม้ว่าจะเป็นแค่ข่าวลือ มันก็ยังเป็นข่าวลือที่โคตรจะไม่มีความน่าจะเป็นไปได้เลย
เพราะฉะนั้น ตอนที่ผมได้ยินข่าวว่า โค้ชทิม ลูอิส ได้โดนปลดประจำการจากการเป็นหัวหน้าผู้ฝึกสอนทีมชาติไทย ผมก็ได้แต่ขำในใจเบาๆ และ ตัดสินใจทักทายโค้ชทิมสอบถามสารทุกข์สุขดิบว่าเป็นยังไงบ้างช่วงนี้
ผม: เป็นไงบ้างโค้ช?
ทิม: ก็สบายที่สุด เท่าที่จะทำได้สำหรับคนที่โดนไล่ออกแล้วไม่เข้าใจเท่าไหร่ว่าทำไมอะนะ !!!
ตอนแรกก็กะว่าคงจะตอบมาประมาณว่า “ตอนนี้ อากาศมันแย่มากเลยนะ” หรือ “เออ อยากเริ่มซ้อมทีมชาติแล้ว” อะไรประมาณนี้ แต่เจอคำตอบจริงๆ เข้าไป ก็ทำเอาอึ้งกิมกี่พอสมควร
โค้ชทิม ลูอิส ได้เข้ามาเป็นหัวหน้าผู้ฝึกสอนทีมบาสเกตบอลชายทีมชาติไทยเมื่อประมาณช่วงเดือนเมษายนปี 2016 และก็เข้ามาด้วยประวัติการคุมทีมที่ถือว่า หรูหรา และ น่าสนใจ เป็นสิ่งแปลกใหม่สำหรับวงการบาสไทย ตอนนั้น ดูเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นยุคใหม่ของวงการบาสเกตบอลประเทศไทยที่สดใสและน่าติดตาม
ครั้งแรกที่ผมได้เจอกับทิม เขาก็สร้างความประทับใจพอสมควร ก่อนเริ่มทำการซ้อมคัดตัวทีมชาติชุด SEABA Stankovic Cup 2016 ครั้งแรก เขาได้เริ่มต้นด้วยการสื่อสารกับทีมงาน สต๊าฟโค้ช อย่างชัดเจนว่า เขาต้องการสร้างอะไรที่นี่ เขามีแผนที่จะทำอะไรบ้าง มีการอธิบายเป็นขั้นเป็นตอนว่าต้องทำอะไรบ้าง ถึงจะสามารถทำให้ทีมไปถึงจุดที่ตั้งเป้าหมายไว้ให้ได้
ตั้งแต่จุดเริ่มต้น ทิม ก็ได้แสดงให้เห็นว่า เขาทำได้ดีในการสร้างรากฐาน และ สร้างระบบ เขามีความละเอียด มีวินัย และ มีหลักการเสมอ ถ้าได้ลองไปถามใครที่ทำงานกับทิมมา ก็คงจะได้ความเห็นในทำนองเดียวกัน
ภายใต้การคุมของโค้ชทิม ทีมชาติไทยได้เหรียญเงินจากรายการ SEABA Stankovic Cup ทำให้ได้สิทธิไปแข่งในรายการ FIBA Asia Challenge 2016 ที่อิหร่าน ในรายการแข่ง FIBA Asia Challenge ทีมชาติไทยไม่สามารถเอาชนะทีมไหนได้เลย บททดสอบสุดท้าย ก็เป็นรายการชิงแชมป์ SEABA Championship ที่ได้เหรียญทองแดงไปด้วยสถิติ ชนะ 4 แพ้ 2
ถึงแม้ว่าจะมีการตัดสินใจที่ขัดใจคนดูบ้าง หรือ ผลงานจากการแข่งที่อาจจะดูไม่สวยงาม… แต่การที่ปลดประจำการเขาออกจากตำแหน่งกลางคันแบบนี้ มันดูกระทันหันทันควันจนทำความเข้าใจได้ยากเกินไป
แม้แต่ทิมเองก็บอกว่าก่อนหน้านี้ ไม่มีสัญญาณใดๆ ที่บ่งชี้ว่า เขามีโอกาสที่จะถูกไล่ออก แม้ว่าเขาจะได้เพียงเหรียญทองแดงจากรายการชิงแชมป์ SEABA Championship แต่เขาก็เล่าว่า บรรยากาศหลังจากที่แข่งจบแล้ว ก็ดูทุกคนค่อนข้างจะมีผลตอบรับที่น่าพึงพอใจ หลังจากที่แข่งจบ เขาก็เดินทางกลับไปประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกาชั่วคราว โดยที่ตลอดเวลานั้น ไม่มีการอัพเดทใดๆ ที่เป็นเหตุสัญญาณว่า เขากำลังจะโดนไล่ออก
สัญญาณแรกที่ทิมได้รับ คือก่อนที่เขาจะออกเดินทางกลับมาประเทศไทยเพียง 10 นาที โดย ได้รับโทรศัพท์จาก โค้ชดั๊กกลาส มาร์ตี้ ตอนที่เขาอยู่ที่สนามบิน
มาร์ตี้ เป็นเพื่อนร่วมงานที่ดีคนหนึ่งของทิม ที่ตอนนี้ได้เข้ามาทำหน้าที่เป็นหัวหน้าผู้ฝึกสอนทีม โมโน แวมไพร์ ที่ประเทศไทย อีกทั้งยังเป็นผู้ช่วยผู้ฝึกสอนของทิมในทีมชาติไทยด้วย
“ผมก็ไม่รู้จะบอกคุณยังไงเหมือนกันนะ” มาร์ตี้บอกกับทิม จากการบอกเล่าของทิมให้ผมฟังผ่านการคุยโทรศัพท์ “แต่ผมคิดว่า พวกเขา กำลังจะไล่คุณออก”
ตอนนนั้น ทิม ก็ได้แต่หัวเราะออกมา ด้วยความบ้าบอของความเป็นไปได้ที่จะเกิดเหตุการณ์แบบนั้นขึ้นมา ที่ผ่านมา มันไม่มีสัญญาณอะไรเลย ที่จะชี้นำมาสู่จุดๆ นั้น
แต่มันก็กลายเป็นความคิดที่ติดหัวเขาตลอดขณะที่เดินทาง
“ลองจินตนาการดูสิ ว่าตลอดระยะเวลาที่บิน 25 ชั่วโมง ผมต้องมานั่งจมกับความกังวลโดยที่ไม่รู้ว่าอะไรกำลังรอผมอยู่ที่ปลายทาง”
หลังจากที่เขาลงจากเครื่อง ก็มีคนมารับทิม แล้วพาไปที่แมคโดนัลด์แห่งหนึ่ง เพื่อพบกับตัวแทนจากกลุ่มคณะกรรมการของ โมโนกรุ๊ป
ถึงแม้ว่า ทิม ลูอิส จะมีหน้าที่เป็นหัวหน้าผู้ฝึกสอนของทีมชาติไทย ก็จริง แต่เจ้าของสัญญาว่าจ้างดังกล่าวนี้ เป็นทาง โมโนกรุ๊ป จึงเป็นสาเหตุที่เขามาเจอกับทิมที่แมคโดนัลด์แห่งนั้น
โมโน กรุ๊ป ถือว่าเป็นกลุ่มอำนาจในวงการบาสไทยกลุ่มหนึ่งที่มีอิทธิพลมาก โดยควบคุมทั้งทีม โมโน แวมไพร์ และ โมโน ทิวไผ่งาม อีกทั้งยังมีการสนับสนุนเงินทุนในการทำลีก TBL/TBSL และ กิจกรรมต่างๆ ของบาสชายทีมชาติไทย
“เกิดอะไรขึ้นเนี่ย?” ทิมถามออกไปตอนที่เจอหน้ากัน
“ผมกำลังจะไล่คุณออก”
หลังจากนั้น ทิม ก็เล่าให้ฟังว่า คำอธิบายแรกที่ได้มา คือ มันเป็น “การตัดสินใจจากฝ่ายประธานล้วนๆ” แต่สำหรับทิมแล้ว คำอธิบายแค่นั้น มันไม่พอ ที่ผ่านมา ไม่เคยมีการแสดงความไม่พอใจกับผลงานหรือตัวเขา หรือ และ ไม่มีแม้แต่การสื่อสารว่า มีใครไม่พอใจกับเขาในด้านไหน เขาจึงรู้สึกว่า เขาควรจะได้รับเหตุผล หรือ เกณฑ์ ในการไล่ออกครั้งนี้มากกว่านี้หน่อย เขาคิดว่าอย่างนั้น น่าจะยุติธรรมกว่า
“ผลงาน” คือคำตอบแรกที่เขาได้รับ
ทิมเล่าว่า มีความไม่พอใจ เกี่ยวกับผลงานของทีมในรายการ FIBA Asia Challenge ที่อิหร่าน นอกจากนั้นแล้ว ยังบอกว่า ไม่พอใจกับผลที่แพ้ให้กับทีมชาติอินโดนีเซียในรายการชิงแชมป์ SEABA ด้วย
แน่นอนว่า การที่แพ้รวดในรายการ FIBA Asia Challenge ก็ไม่ได้ถือว่าเป็นผลงานที่น่าประทับใจในอุดมคติ แต่รายการแข่งขันนั้น เป็นครั้งแรกสำหรับเด็กรุ่นใหม่หลายๆ คนในทีม สำหรับการแข่งขันระดับเอเชีย แม้ว่าจะไม่ชนะใครเลย แต่หลายๆ คนก็รู้สึกประทับใจที่สามารถไล่ต้อนทีมชาติญี่ปุ่นได้ครึ่งเกม อีกทั้งยังเกือบพลิกเอาชนะทีมชาติกาตาร์ได้อีกด้วย
แน่นอนอีก ว่าการที่แพ้ทีมชาติอินโดฯ ในชิงแชมป์ SEABA นั้นเจ็บปวด แต่ก็ต้องไม่ลืมว่า ทีมชาติอินโดฯ นั้น เกือบจะเป็นทีมเดียวกับทีมที่ได้เหรียญเงินใน SEA Games 2015 เลยนะ การที่แพ้แค่ 1 แต้ม แถมยังโดนพลิกจากลูกยิงใจใหญ่แบบนั้น… มันน่าผิดหวังขนาดนั้นเลยเรอะ?
เพราะฉะนั้น พอได้ยินว่า “ผลงาน” คือ เหตุผลหนึ่งที่ถูกยกมาสนับสนุนการไล่ออกโค้ชทิม ผมก็ต้องถามเขาต่อว่า “แล้วเขาคาดหวังผลงานแบบไหนหรอ”
หลังจากที่จบรายการ FIBA Asia Challenge 2016 ทิมระลึกกล่าวว่า ทั้งเขา สมาคมบาสเกตบอลแห่งประเทศไทย (BSAT) และ โมโน ต่างก็ได้มานั่งประชุมเพื่อพูดคุยเรื่องเป้าหมายของทีมชาติไทยในรายการที่จะส่งแข่งขันในปี 2017 ทิมบอกว่า ในที่ประชุมครั้งนั้น มีการตกลงกันระหว่างทุกฝ่ายว่า เป้าหมายหลักของทีมชาติไทยในปีนี้ คือ SEA Games และจะไม่หวังผลเท่าไหร่ กับ การชิงแชมป์ SEABA เป็นที่ทราบกันว่า ในรายการชิงแชมป์ SEABA นั้น จะมีการเก็บไพ่ไว้บางตัวสำหรับ SEA Games อีกทั้งจะยังจะมีการทดลองผู้เล่นหน้าใหม่ๆ ด้วย และจะยังไม่มีการเรียกตัวผู้เล่นลูกครึ่งเข้ามาเสริมทีมด้วย
ด้วยความเข้าใจเหล่านี้ ทิมก็ได้แต่ตั้งคำถามต่อว่า ทำไมเขาถึงโดนไล่ออกด้วยการอ้างถึงผลงาน ในเมื่อผลงานที่เขาทำมา มันก็ไม่ได้สวนทางกับเป้าหมายที่คุยกันไว้ ในทางกลับกัน ทิมรู้สึกว่า ทีมชาติไทยได้มีการพัฒนาขึ้นมาอย่างต่อเนื่องตลอดหนึ่งปีที่ผ่านมา เขาบอกว่ามีผู้เล่นอายุน้อยๆ หลายๆ คนที่พัฒนาขึ้นมาได้อย่างน่าพอใจภายใต้ระบบของทีมชาติ ความเป็นมืออาชีพก็สูงขึ้น อีกทั้งยังมีคณะกรรมการในองค์กร FIBA หลายๆ ท่านที่แสดงความพอใจกับพัฒนาการของวงการบาสไทยในปีที่ผ่านมา
ต่อจากเหตุผลเรื่อง “ผลงาน” ทิมเล่าว่า ได้มีการบอกว่า ทิม “เตรียมพร้อมมาไม่พอ” สำหรับรายการชิงแชมป์ SEABA Championship
เมื่อช่วงต้นปีที่ผ่านมา การชิมแชมป์รายการแข่งขัน Thailand Basketball Super League ได้ลากยาวไปถึง 5 เกม และจบลงในวันที่ 5 เมษายน หลังจากนั้น ผู้เล่นทีมชาติส่วนใหญ่ก็ต้องการพักสำหรับช่วงเทศกาลสงกรานต์อีกสัปดาห์ กว่าที่ทั้งทีมจะกลับมาพร้อมหน้าพร้อมตา และ พร้อมซ้อมเป็นทีม ก็เหลือเวลาในการเตรียมทีมอีกแค่ 2 สัปดาห์ ซึ่งเป็นเวลาที่ถือว่าค่อนข้างน้อย สำหรับทีมคาดการณ์ว่าจะเป็นตัวเต็งของรายการ อีกทั้งยังเป็นทีมที่มีผู้เล่นอายุน้อยๆ เป็นหลักด้วย
ทิมบอกว่า ทีมชาติไทย น่าจะมีปัญหาเดียวกันอีกครั้งสำหรับรายการ SEA Games ค่อนข้างนะแน่นอน ด้วยรอบชิงของ TBL ที่น่าจะลากยาวไป 5 เกมอีกครั้ง ทำให้ทีมชาติไทย จะเหลือเวลาเตรียมทีมแค่ประมาณ 1 เดือน
ทิมบอกต่อว่า เขาเอง ก็เตรียมทีมได้ถึงแค่ระดับหนึ่ง แต่ ถ้าจะให้ที่สุด มันต้องเป็นความพยายามจากทุกๆ ฝ่ายที่เกี่ยวข้อง เพื่อให้ได้การเตรียมทีมที่สมบูรณ์แบบที่สุด
“ถ้าคุณคิดว่าคุณให้คุณค่ากับทีมชาติจริงๆ คุณต้องมานั่งประชุมร่วมกัน วางปฏิทินให้ชัดเจน และ ปฏิบัติตามให้ได้ซะ” ทิมกล่าวไว้
แน่นอนว่า ลีกแข่งภายในประเทศ มันเป็นเวทีสำหรับการเก็บเกี่ยวประสบการณ์ที่ดีสำหรับผู้เล่นชาวไทย แต่มันก็มีส่วนที่ไม่ตรงตามเป้าหมายของการเตรียมทีมชาติเช่นเดียวกัน ไม่ใช่เพียงแค่เรื่องตารางเวลา แต่ในเรื่องของบทบาทสำหรับผู้เล่นที่จะเล่นในทีมชาติอีกด้วย
ทิมเล่าว่า ทีมชาติไทยผ่านสองสถานการณ์ในช่วงท้ายเกม ที่ไม่สามารถทำเกมได้ตามที่คิดไว้ได้ คือในเกมที่เจอกับ อินโดนีเซีย (ชิงแชมป์ SEABA) และ กาตาร์ (FIBA Asia Challenge)
ด้วยรูปแบบของลีกที่แข่งในไทย ทำให้ผู้เล่นไทยไม่ค่อยได้มีบทบาทเป็นตัวเดินเกมในช่วงเกมสูสี เพราะฉะนั้น พอถึงเวลาที่พวกเขาต้องเล่นบทบาทนั้นในทีมชาติ การที่จะไปคาดหวังว่าเขาจะเล่นได้ด้วยประสิทธิภาพเต็ม 100% ได้ มันก็ดูไม่คอ่ยแฟร์เท่าไหร่
ทิมบอกว่า เขารู้สึกว่ามันไม่ยุติธรรมเท่าไหร่นักที่จะบอกว่า “เขา” เตรียมพร้อมมาไม่มาก ในเมื่อมันเป็นการทำงานร่วมกันระหว่างหลายๆ ฝ่าย (BSAT, TBL) ที่ทำให้มีเวลาหรือทรัพยากรเท่าที่เขาได้มา ในการเตรียมพร้อมการแข่งขัน
นอกจากนั้นทิมยังบอกว่า ทางบอร์ดบริหาร ไม่เห็นด้วยกับการที่ทิมบินกลับไป “พักร้อน” หลังจากจบรายการชิงแชมป์ SEABA โดยบอกว่า มันไม่มีความจำเป็น แต่จากที่ทิมเล่ามา คือ การที่บินกลับไปครั้งนั้น เป็นส่วนหนึ่งอยู่ในเงื่อนไขสัญญา ว่าเขาจะสามารถบินลับไปสหรัฐอเมริกาได้กี่ครั้งต่อปี
ยังมีกรณียิบย่อยนิดๆ หน่อยๆ ที่ทิมบอกว่า ถูกยกมาเป็นเหตุผลในการไล่ออก แต่ส่วนตัวแล้ว เขารู้สึกเหมือน “โดนดูถูก” ในกรณีของการ “จัดการเงินโบนัสอัดฉีด” ที่เขาถูกกล่าวหาว่า “พยายามแบ่งมาให้ตัวเองมากที่สุด”
จากแหล่งข้อมูลหลายๆ ที่นั้น ได้ความว่าทีมชาติไทยมีการอัดฉีดเงินจำนวนก้อนหนึ่งสำหรับผลงานในรายการแข่งขันชิงแชมป์ SEABA จากนั้น จึงมีการประกาศมอบหน้าที่ในการแบ่งส่วนของเงินอัดฉีดก้อนนั้นให้กับโค้ชทิม
จากที่ทิมเล่ามา เขาได้จัดการแบ่งเงินอัดฉีดก่อนนั้น โดยพิจารณาจาก บทบาทของแต่ละคนในทีมชาติ เขาบอกว่า ผู้เล่นที่มีบทบาทน้อยกว่า ก็จะได้ส่วนแบ่งที่น้อยกว่า ทั้งนี้ นอกจากเป็นการตอบแทนผู้เล่นระดับสตาร์แล้ว ยังเป็นการกระตุ้นผู้เล่นคนอื่นๆ ให้ยกระดับตัวเองตามด้วย สต๊าฟที่เจ้ามาซ้อมน้อยกว่า ก็จะได้ส่วนแบ่งที่น้อยกว่าคนที่เข้ามาทุกคน ตามลำดับ
จากที่ทิมเล่า เขาถูกบอกว่า “That is not the Mono way” หรือ นั่นไม่ใช่วิถีของโมโน
จากการคุยโทรศัพท์กับทิม เขายังเล่าเพิ่มอีกด้วยว่า ตอนนี้มีข่าวลือว่า เขาเป็นคนตัดสินใจลาออกเอง ไม่ใช่ว่าเขาถูกไล่ออก
“นั่นไม่ใช่สิ่งที่ผมอยากจะทำเลยแม้แต่นิดเดียว” เขากล่าวต่อ “พวกเราพัฒนากันมาไกล แม้ว่าจะยังไม่เคยได้ใช้ทีมเดียวต่อๆ กันสองรายการก็ตามที”
“มีคนในองค์กร FIBA หลายๆ คนติดต่อผมมา ถามว่าสถานการณ์คืออะไร เกิดอะไรขึ้นด้วยความมึนงง”
“ผมเคยพูดมาตลอดว่า สำหรับงานทีมชาติไทยงานนี้ มันเป็นกระบวนการที่ยาวอย่างน้อย 4 หรือ 5 ปีแน่ๆ”
ผมได้คุยกับเขาประมาณ 2 สัปดาห์หลังจากที่เขาถูกไล่ออก แต่ก็ยังรู้สึกได้ถึงความหงุดหงิดในน้ำเสียงของเขา บางทีก็คงเป็นความหงุดหงิดของคนที่อยู่ดีๆ ก็ตกงาน แถมยังได้เหตุผลที่ไม่ชัดเจน แต่อีกส่วนหนึ่ง ผมรู้สึกว่า เขาหงุดหงิดที่เขาน่าจะทำอะไรกับวงการบาสไทยได้มากกว่านี้
หลังจากที่ได้เล่ารายละเอียดทั้งหมดมาให้ผมฟัง ก็มีช่วงที่หยุดพักทั้งคู่ ให้ทุกสิ่งที่เพิ่งเล่ามา ได้ตกตะกอน
“ผมรู้สึกแย่นะ เอาจริงๆ แต่ท้ายสุดแล้ว มันก็ไม่ใช่เรื่องใหญ่สำหรับผมหรอก” ทิมกล่าว “โค้ชทุกคนมาแล้ว ซักพักก็ต้องผ่านไปทั้งนั้น มันเป็นเรื่องธรรมชาติ”
“แต่ท้ายสุดแล้ว คนที่จะมีผลกระทบมากที่สุด คือ ตัวผู้เล่นเอง และ ตัวแฟนๆ นั่นเอง”
หลังจากนั้น เราก็ได้คุยเรื่องอนาคตของทีมชาติไทยเล็กน้อย ก่อนที่ทิมจะวางสายไป ปล่อยให้คำพูดทิ้งท้ายของเขาก็ดังก้องอยู่ในหัวของผมต่อไป
สำหรับทิม การที่เขาถูกปลดกลางอากาศแบบนี้ มันไม่ใช่เรื่องที่ดีแน่ๆ แต่ เขาก็ไม่น่าจะหางานใหม่ได้ยาก จริงๆ แล้ว ตอนที่เขาโทรมา เขาโทรมาจากสนามบิน ก่อนที่กำลังจะเดินทางไป NBA Summer League ที่ ลาสเวกัส เพื่อคุยเรื่องโอกาสงานต่างๆ นอกจากนี้ ยังมีรายงานข้อมูลมาอีกว่า เขากำลังจะรับหน้าที่เป็นที่ปรึกษาสำหรับทีม Talk N’ Text Katropa ในลีก PBA อีกด้วย
โค้ชทุกคนมาแล้ว ซักพักก็ต้องผ่านไปทั้งนั้น
สถานการณ์สำหรับทีมชาติไทย อย่างน้อยในระยะสั้นๆ นี้ ดูไม่ค่อยดีเท่าไหร่นัก ตอนนี้ตำแหน่งหัวหน้าผู้ฝึกสอนทีมชาติยังถือว่าว่างอยู่ และกำลังจะแข่งขันรายการระดับนานาชาติในอีกเดือนครึ่งเท่านั้น
มีการคาดการณ์ว่า คงเป็นโค้ชดั๊กกลาส มาร์ตี้ ที่จะได้ขึ้นตำแหน่งนี้ แต่สถานการณ์นั้นก็มีความยุ่งยากในตัวเองเหมือนกัน สิ่งที่ต้องไม่ลืมคือ โค้ชดั๊กเอง ที่มาเมืองไทยส่วนหนึ่งก็เพราะทิมเช่นกัน
ไม่ว่าใครจะขึ้นเป็นโค้ชทีมชาติก็ตาม ผู้เล่นก็ต้องมาปรับตัวกันใหม่หมด ในช่วงระยะเวลาที่จำกัด ตัวเต็งอื่นๆ อย่าง ฟิลิปปินส์ อินโดนีเซีย มาเลเซีย และ สิงคโปร์ ต่างก็นำหน้าในเรื่องการเตรียมทีมไปค่อนข้างไกลแล้ว เพราะฉะนั้น ศึกใน SEA Games ครั้งนี้ สำหรับทีมชาติไทย จะไม่ง่ายแน่นอน
มาลองพิจารณาว่าทีมชาติไทยอยู่ตรงไหน เมื่อ 2 ปีที่ผ่านมาใน SEA Games 2015 แล้ว ก็ได้แต่มองว่า ตอนนี้ เรากำลังเดินถอยหลังอยู่รึเปล่า ความต่อเนื่อง การพัฒนาที่สั่งสมมาตลอดหนึ่งที่ผ่านมา ตอนนี้มันถูกระงับชะงักไป และ เหมือนว่า กำลังกลับไปที่จุดเริ่มต้นใหม่อีกครั้งรึเปล่า?
ท้ายสุดแล้ว คนที่จะมีผลกระทบมากที่สุด คือ ตัวผู้เล่นเอง และ ตัวแฟนๆ นั่นเเอง
Tones and Definition 
Thailand seems to be on the verge of doing something special on the internationally scene. There is definitely talent in the country and the game seems to be growing. I’m not sure what the whole story is on coach Tim being fired but I’m guessing that at least in part there was not a lot of preparation time for some competitions. Local tournaments and leagues take up a lot of the players’ time.
There seems to be quite a few local tournaments around and money can be made from each one too, so it’s hard to fault the guys for playing locally. I’ve been told that sometimes players don’t have much of a choice either. It’s unfortunate for the national team if it is indeed the case that the coach doesn’t have adequate time to prepare. This happens in the TBSL and the TBL too. Often times players are not available for practices and/or games. Players in the military especially, often can’t make practices because of other commitments and tournaments. Then there is the university league which should also be mentioned because I hear talk of it being expanded. Some players want to play for their university, their province, a TBSL team, a TBL team and the national team or some combination of those.
I’m not sure what the priority is; national team first, followed by local tournaments, followed by the TBSL and then the TBL or is there another order? In any case there is a lot going on, and I know first hand that it’s not always easy for a coach.
It must be an awful feeling getting fired. Hopefully, Coach Tim will land another coaching job soon and Coach Doug will be able to stay around for longer and have adequate time to prepare going forward. I wish both coaches the best.
