The Vietnamese Basketball Association will be heading into its second season later this year and while there are many interesting things that will be going on (a new team, player movements, etc.), one of the most interesting things about the VBA will be their “VBA Draft”.

A “draft” is one of the most entertaining parts of a season in a basketball league, mostly because it happens during the off-season where nothing else is going on. It also sheds light on each team as in where they are headed (or even where they are not headed). In the brief moment of when it is announced that a certain team drafts a certain player, there is a glimpse of how that team looks with that player on board. How Player A and Player B will co-exist, how much Player A will help the team on defense, etc.
The draft gives “hope” to teams in the league, whether it’s false hope or not. Teams that are struggling with current situations can look forward to preparing for the future surrounding a certain draft situation.
Most importantly, it gives a sense of “parity” in the league.
That’s why the VBA Draft is such an intriguing aspect of the league.
Since they were starting from scratch, it was important for the VBA to maintain the parity in the league… which they managed to do (I guess?) with the bottom-ranked team in the League, the Danang Dragons, won the Championship.
However, one thing about the VBA that was left questionable was the signing of Viet-Kieu (Vietnamese Foreigners or as I will refer to from now on as VKs) on each team. Each team was allowed to sign 2 Vietnamese-Foreigners per team from a pool of VKs compiled by the VBA. But the process from how players were assigned to which team or who picked whom in which order was still unknown.
In the end, I supposed the VBA was the one who decided who to assign to which team to keep the level of talent in the league within the same range, along with some other factors like the birthplace of the player’s parents among others. The end product wasn’t disappointing, but the problem was how they were going to resolve this year’s crop of VK players.
Say Hello to the VBA Draft.
Let’s iron out the details of the VBA Draft (as provided from ASEAN Sports via the VBA):
The 5 original teams of the VBA (with the exception of the Danang Dragons) each had a quota of 2 VK players, as following:
Saigon Heat: David Arnold / Tran Dang Khoa
Hanoi Buffaloes:Ryan Arnold / Phuoc Anthony Phan
Cantho Catfish: Tam Dinh / Sang Dinh
Ho Chi Minh City Wings: Justin Young
Danang Dragons: Jimmy Kien / Horace Nguyen / Stefan Nguyen
Before going through the draft process this season, teams were able to retain one VK player on their team. Only 3 teams elected to retain their VK players:
Saigon Heat: David Arnold
Cantho Catfish: Tam Dinh
Danang Dragons: Horace Nguyen
It’s highly unlikely that the Wings wouldn’t like to retain Justin Young (who had won the Defensive Player of the Year award last season), so I’m guessing that the retention process had to be mutual between the player and the team. David Arnold and Tam Dinh were no-brainer choices for their respective teams and Horace Nguyen had the edge over Jimmy Kien for his performance with the Saigon Heat in the ABL.
With three teams already retaining one VK player, the remaining three teams (including the new Thang Long Warriors) would be given the priority of getting to pick in the first round of the VBA Draft. Those three teams are:
Thang Long Warriors (New Team)
Hanoi Buffaloes
Ho Chi Minh City Wings
The remaining 7 VK Players would be put in the VK player pool:
Justin Young
Jimmy Kien
Sang Dinh
Ryan Arnold
Phuoc Anthony Phan
Tran Dang Khoa (Most likely withdrawn this season)
Stefan Nguyen
In addition to these 7 players, the VBA searched all around the world for even more vietnamese heritage players. Some were recruited via the VBA US Tryout which was held in early May, while some I suppose were direct contact.
Here’s the list of all the players in the VBA draft this season.
Now that the VBA had a pool of players to draft from, it was time to figure out the order of selection.
The First Round of the draft would have only three teams selecting, which are the three teams that didn’t retain their heritage imports. In the Second Round, all teams get a pick. The order of each round is determined via a “lottery” where a team’s odd are based on their “Roster Ratings”. I can’t find an official confirmation on “who” determines the roster ratings, but a solid guess would be that team coaches in coordination with the VBA itself compile a rating based on the submitted local rosters. Teams with higher ratings get less ping pong balls in the ballot, hence getting less chance for a high pick.
Late Edit: Before this article could be published, the VBA had already released the Roster Ratings of each team and the respective odds in each draft round as per the following graphic:
The first column notes the roster rankings of each squad (not officially released how the rankings are determined). The second column notes the odds of winning the First Round Lottery and the final column notes the odds of the second round lottery.
Now with players in a pool to draft from and an order of selection, the VBA Draft would be set!
I love it.
First of all, the VBA Draft (if held true to it’s process without any shady business behind the curtains) gives each team a fair chance. With the local basketball talent level still in development, the main force of each team lies within their VK players. Giving a fair chance to each team to get their featured player sets up a balanced level of talent.
Parity in a sports league is important so holding this draft is a positive move forward.
The format that the VBA Draft is being held now might not hold up once the local talent catches up or the overseas talent pool dries up, but it’s a good start.
Another thing I love about the VBA Draft is the marketability of it. Without the draft, the VBA off-season just wouldn’t be as interesting as it is. Similar to the NBA Draft, you get a large chunk of the off-season where there isn’t any basketball being played, but the league is still in the conversation with talks of who will draft whom and whom will be drafted where. Instead of just popping up near opening day with a roster, there is build up and fans are able to get a better picture of which team they can be expecting to see.
The VBA Draft is an ideally brilliant move… if it is held without any twists and turns. As long as the VBA Draft doesn’t become a merely a display of pre-arranged compromises, it should turn out as a success.

ลีกบาสเกตบอลประจำประเทศเวียดนาม หรือ วีบีเอ กำลังจะเปิดศึกครั้งที่สองในช่วงปลายปีนี้ และ ถึงแม้ว่าจะมีประเด็นน่าสนใจหลายๆ อย่าง ท้ังทีมหน้าใหม่ หรือ การเคลื่อนย้ายตัวของผู้เล่น สิ่งที่โดดเด่นออกมา ก็คงไม่พ้น วีบีเอ ดราฟ
การ “ดราฟ” สำหรับผมแล้ว ถือว่าเป็นส่วนที่น่าตื่นเต้นที่สุดของการแข่งขันบาสเกตบอลฤดูกาลหนึ่ง ส่วนหนึ่งก็เพราะว่ามันเกิดขึ้นในช่วงปิดซีซั่นที่ไม่มีการแข่งขันใดๆ เกิดขึ้น มันทำให้เราได้เห็นภาพลางๆ ของทีมๆ หนึ่ง และเห็นภาพคร่าวๆ ของเส้นทางเดินทางผู้บริหารทีมวางไว้ ในช่วงพริบตาที่ประกาศชื่อผู้ที่ถูกดราฟไปนั้น มันทำให้เราสามารถใช้จินตนาการในการวาดฝันความเข้ากันได้ของผู้เล่น และ ระบบทีมปัจจุบัน
การที่มี “ดราฟ” มันก็เหมือนเป็นการสร้าง “ความหวัง” ให้กับแต่ละทีมในลีก… ซึ่งก็เป็นได้ทั้งความหวังจอมปลอมหรือ ความหวังของจริงก็ได้ ทีมที่กำลังอยู่ในสถานการณ์ที่ไม่ค่อยดีนักในปัจจุบัน ก็สามารถที่จะมองไปข้างหน้ากับอนาคตของการดราฟได้
และที่เหนือกว่าสิ่งอื่นใด การดราฟ ทำให้เกิดความรู้สึก “เท่าเทียม” ซึ่งกันและกัน ภายในลีก
และนั่น คือ สิ่งที่ทำให้ วีบีเอ ดราฟ เป็นสิ่งที่โคตรจะน่าสนใจ
ด้วยการที่เริ่มต้นจาก 0 การที่จะสร้างความเท่าเทียมในลีก เป็นสิ่งที่สำคัญ และ พวกเขาก็ทำได้ค่อนข้างดี โดยทีมบ๊วยตารางอย่าง ดานัง ดรากอนส์ สามารถล้มทุกทีมจนคว้าแชมป์ได้ในปีที่ผ่านมา
แต่ สิ่งที่ยังทำให้เกิดความคลางแคลงใจสำหรับผม คือ การเซ็นตัวผู้เล่น “ลูกครึ่ง” เข้ามาในแต่ละทีม ทุกทีมมีสิทธิที่จะเซ็นผู้เล่นลูกครึ่งที่ทางลีก VBA เป็นคนจัดหามาให้ได้ทีมละ 2 คน… หากแต่ว่า ขั้นตอนในการจัดสันทีมให้กับผู้เล่นแต่ละคน มีความคลุมเครือในปีที่แล้ว ทำให้เกิดคำถามว่า ทำไมคนนี้ ได้อยู่ทีมนี้ และ ทำไมคนนี้ ได้อยู่ทีมนี้
ท้ายที่สุดแล้ว ผมก็คาดว่า ทาง วีบีเอ คงตัดสินใจอย่างเป็นกลาง และกระจายผู้เล่นออกไปในแต่ละทีมให้เกิดความสมดุลย์ในลีก อีกทั้งยังมีการใส่ตัวแปรอื่นๆ เช่นสถานที่เกิดของพ่อหรือแม่ที่เป็นชาวเวียดนามเข้าไปด้วย ผลที่ออกมาก็ถือว่าไม่น่าผิดหวัง… แต่ปัญหาที่ตามมาในการเปิดซีซั่นที่สองคือ จะทำอย่างไรกับผู้เล่นลูกครึ่งชุดใหม่ที่จะเข้ามาปีนี้?
และนั่น ก็คือที่มาของ วีบีเอ ดราฟ
ทีนี้ เราก็ลองมาตีแผ่รายละเอียดของ วีบีเอ ดราฟ กันซักหน่อย ซึ่งเป็นรายละเอียดที่ทาง วีบีเอ ได้แจ้งกับทางเพื่อนบ้าน ASEAN Sports:
จากทีมปีที่แล้วทั้ง 5 ทีม แต่ละทีมจะมีผู้เล่น “ลูกครึ่ง” อย่างน้อย ทีมละ 2 คน (ยกเว้นทีม ดานัง ดรากอนส์) ตามนี้:
ไซ่ง่อน ฮีต: เดวิด อาร์โนล์ด / จัน ดัง กวา
ฮานอย บัฟฟาโลว์: ฟวก แอนโธนี่ ฟาน / ไรอัน อาร์โนล์ด
เกินเทอ แคทฟิช: ตัม ดิน / ซาง ดิน
โฮจิมินฮ์ซิตี้ วิงส์: จัสติน ยัง
ดานัง ดรากอนส์: จิมมี่ เคียน / ฮอเรส เหงียน / สเตฟาน เหงียน
ก่อนที่จะเข้ากระบวนการทั้งหมด แต่ละทีมมีสิทธิที่จะ “รั้ง” ผู้เล่นลูกครึ่งของตัวเองได้ 1 คน ซึ่งในปีแรกนี้ มีทีมที่ใช้สิทธินี้ 3 ทีม:
ไซ่ง่อน ฮีต: เดวิด อาร์โนล์ด
เกินเทอ แคทฟิช: ตัม ดิน
ดานัง ดรากอนส์: ฮอเรส เหงียน
คงเป็นไปได้ยากที่ทีม วิงส์ จะไม่ใช้สิทธิรั้ง จัสติน ยัง ที่เป็นทั้งผู้เล่นเกมป้องกันยอดเยี่ยมปีที่แล้ว เพราะฉะนั้น คาดว่า การใช้สิทธินี้ น่าจะต้องมีการตกลงกันทั้งสองฝ่ายระหว่างทีมกับผู้เล่น
สำหรับ เดวิด อาร์โนล์ด (ไซ่ง่อน ฮีต) และ ตัม ดิน (เกินเทอ แคทฟิช) แน่นอนว่า จะต้องโดนรั่งอยู่แล้ว ส่วนทาง ฮอเรส ได้อยู่ต่อกับทีมแชมป์เก่า คาดว่าน่าจะด้วยผลงานที่โดดเด่นกับทีม ไซ่ง่อน ฮีตใน ABL
เพราะฉะนั้น หลังจากที่สามทีมรั้งผู้เล่นลูกครึ่งของตัวเองไว้ จึงเหลืออีกสามทีม (รวมทีมใหม่ คือ ทังลอม วอริเออร์ส) ที่จะยังไม่มีผู้เล่นลูกครึ่งในทีม และจึงมีโอกาสได้เลือกก่อนใน วีบีเอ ดราฟ ครั้งนี้ ซึ่งทั้งสามทีมมี:
ทังลอม วอริเออร์ส (ทีมใหม่)
ฮานอย บัฟฟาโลว์
โฮจิมินฮ์ซิตี้ วิงส์
ส่วนผู้เล่นลูกครึ่งที่เหลือทั้ง 7 คน ก็จะกลับเข้าไปเป็นรายชื่อผู้เล่นที่สามารถดราฟได้ในปีนี้:
จัสติน ยัง
จิมมี่ เคียน
ซาง ดิน
ไรอัน อาร์โนล์ด
ฟวก แอนโธนี่ ฟาน
จัน ดัง กวา (ซึ่งน่าจะถอนตัวจากการดราฟปีนี้)
สเตฟาน เหงียน
นอกจากผู้เล่นทั้ง 7 คนนี้ ทีมงานของ VBA ยังได้ออกตระเวนหาผู้เล่นลูกครึ่งเชื้อสายเวียดนามเพิ่มขึ้นจากทั่วทุกมุมโลก บางคนก็มาจากการคัดตัวที่ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกาเมื่อต้นเดือนพฤษภาคมที่ผ่านมา ส่วนอีกกลุ่มคาดว่าคงมาจากการติดต่อโดยตรงกับลีก
นี่คือรายชื่อผู้เล่นทั้งหมดที่มีสิทธิในการถูกดราฟใน วีบีเอ ปีนี้
ตอนนี้ มีกลุ่มผู้เล่นให้ดราฟละ สิ่งที่ต้องทำต่อมา คือ การจัดลำดับในการดราฟ
ในการดราฟรอบแรกจะมีเพียงแค่ 3 ทีม คือ ทีมที่ไม่ได้ใช้สิทธิในการรั้งตัวผู้เล่นลูกครึ่ง อย่างที่กล่าวข้างต้น ส่วนในรอบที่ 2 ทุกทีมจะมีโอกาสได้เลือก
ลำดับของการเลือกจะมาจากการ “สุ่มจับฉลาก” โดยอัตราที่จะได้อันดับสูงๆ จะอ้างอิงจากการคาดคะแนนความแข็งแกร่งของรายชื่อทีม ณ ตอนนี้ ยังหาแถลงการณ์อย่างทางการไม่ได้ ว่าใครคือผู้ที่กำหนด “ความแข็งแกร่งของรายชื่อทีม แต่ความว่าคงเป็นการให้คะแนนจากโค้ชแต่ละทีมรวมถึงคณะกรรมการ วีบีเอ บางคน
ทีมที่มีคะแนนความแข็งแกร่งสูง ก็จะมีโอกาสได้อันดับสูงน้อยลงตามลำดับ
ก่อนที่บทความนี้จะเขียนเสร็จ ทาง วีบีเอ ได้ประกาศ คะแนนความแข็งแกร่ง ของแต่ละทีมออกมาแล้ว (ตามรายชื่อผู้เล่น local ของแต่ละทีม) อีกทั้งยังมีคำนวณมาให้เสร็จศัพท์ว่ามีโอกาสได้ การดราฟอันดับ 1 ในแต่ละรอบเท่าไหร่
ตัวเลขในแถวแรกคือคะแนนความแข็งแกร่งของรายชื่อทีม ซึ่งไม่มีการประกาศว่าคำนวณอย่างไร ส่วนตัวเลขแถวที่สอง และ สาม คือ โอกาสร้อยละที่จะได้สิทธิดราฟอันดับ 1 ในรอบแรก และ รอบสอง ตามลำดับ
พอมีผู้เล่นให้ดราฟ และ มีลำดับในการดราฟ ทุกอย่างพร้อม ก็เริ่มต้นในการดราฟผู้เล่นเข้าทีมได้!!
เฮ้ย ผมโคตรชอบเลยนะ พูดตรงๆ
อย่างแรก ถ้า วีบีเอ ดราฟ ครั้งนี้ จัดอย่างตรงไปตรงมา ไม่มีอะไรในกองไผ่ มันทำให้ทุกๆ ทีมมีโอกาสในการสร้างทีมที่แข็งแกร่งเท่าๆ กัน ด้วยความที่ผู้เล่น local ยังต้องพัฒนาฝีมือกันอยู่ กำลังหลักของแต่ละทีมจึงไปตกอยู่กับผู้เล่นลูกครึ่งซะเป็นส่วนมาก การที่ให้โอกาสเท่าๆ กันในการเลือกผู้เล่นที่จะเข้ามาเป็นแกนหลักของทีม ทำให้แต่ละทีมมีความเสมอภาคกันมากขึ้น
ความเท่าเทียม ในลีกกีฬา ไม่ว่าจะกีฬาอะไร คือ แกนหลักสำคัญ และการที่ตัดดราฟขึ้นมาครั้งนี้ ก็เป็นแนวทางที่ก้าวไปข้างหน้าได้อย่างดี
รูปแบบของการดราฟในตอนนี้ อาจจะไม่อยู่ยงคงกระพัน เมื่อถึงเวลาที่ผู้เล่นท้องถิ่นยกระดับฝีมือตัวเองขึ้นมา หรือ ผู้เล่นลูกครึ่งน้อยลง แต่มันก็ถือว่าเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นที่ดี
อีกมุมที่ผมชอบเกี่ยวกับ วีบีเอ ดราฟ คือ มันเป็นสิ่งที่ “ขายได้” ถ้าไม่มีการดราฟครั้งนี้ ช่วงปิดฤดูกาลของ วีบีเอ ก็จะค่อนข้างเงียบเหงา และไม่ครึกครื้นเท่าที่เป็นอยู่ เช่นเดียวกันกับการดราฟใน NBA แม้ว่าจะไม่มีการแข่งขันเกิดขึ้นในช่วงปิดฤดูกาล แต่ก็ยังมีการพูดถึงตัวลีกอยู่ดี ว่าทีมนี้จะดราฟใคร หรือ คนนี้จะถูกใครดราฟ ซึ่งจะต่างจากการที่อยู่ๆ โผล่มาการแข่งขันวันแรก แล้วมีรายชื่อผู้เล่นออกมาให้ตื่นเต้นตกใจกัน แฟนๆ ที่ติดตามแต่ลพคนก็จะเห็นภาพมากขึ้นว่า ทีมที่เราจะดูในซีซั่นนี้ มันจะมีรูปแบบอย่างไรบ้าง
วีบีเอ ดราฟ คือ สิ่งที่ดีและน่าชื่นชม… ถ้ามันสามารถที่จะคงความตรงไปตรงมาในการจัดการ ตราบเท่าที่ วีบีเอ ดราฟ ไม่กลายเป็นการจัดฉาก เพียงแค่เพื่อการแสดงการตัดสินใจกันเบื้องหลังที่ตกลงกันไปแล้ว มันก็จะกลายเป็นความสำเร็จในวงการบาสได้
อนาคตของผู้เล่น 9 คน และ ทีม 6 ทีม ใกล้จะได้ชี้ชะตากันแล้ว!
