Fans in Thailand better start getting used to the #BasketballNeverStops mantra because it seems like they are taking that quite literally in the Land of Smiles these days.
Brace yourselves, the TBL is coming.

Today was the initial press conference for the GSB Thailand Basketball League 2017, held at Stadium29.
I wasn’t able to attend the press conference due to personal issues, but thanks to the power of technology, I’ve been able to collect some interesting things worth pointing out.
- Same old, same old
Let’s point out the things that have not changed about the TBL.
The same 8 teams will be participating in the TBL this season (all teams are returning for the first time ever!!!) which is great for continuity. Mono Vampires, Hitech, Madgoat, OSK, Thai General Equipment, Mono Thewphaingarm, PEA, Dunkin Raptors. This is an underrated awesome thing for the league.
All games will be played at Stadium29 which is by far the best venue for basketball in Thailand. It’s no surprise that the TBL is returning here for a 2nd straight season. It does feels weird and a bit tedious that the entire league is playing on one team’s home court, but the fact that it’s the best stadium out there as of right now makes it understandable.
All teams will be playing on both Saturday and Sunday every week. While players and teams are probably used to the format by now, I personally still feel that this can cause some problems in performance consistencies. Playing back-to-back does have a toll on a players fatigue which is why you see leagues avoid have back-to-back games and NBA players taking “rests” on such occasions. Probably a lost cause to raise this up at this point with limitations of TV/livestream schedules, but someone’s got to say something at some point.
Teams will play double-round robin to determine the Top 4 teams that will make the Playoffs (this is not mentioned in the press released, but assumed from past format). The playoffs will be decided in a best of 3 series (it’s not mentioned if the same format will be used for the TBL Finals, but the past season was a Best of 3 series as well).
There will still be a window between the first leg and the second leg where teams are allowed to revamp their rosters. In the past season, ASEAN Imports could be changed at any moment but that exception was not mentioned in the press release so far.
- The Import Rule Roulette
One thing I’ve always found fascinating about the TBL is their ever-changing rule for Imports. The early years of the TBL saw multiple imports on the court at the same time before changing to a sign-2-play-1 rule three seasons ago. The league followed the steps of the ASEAN Basketball League an implemented an ASEAN Import rule limited to the bottom 3 teams from the previous season + new teams.
So it should come with no surprise that the league has a new import rule yet again!
The press release doesn’t mentioned the World Import rule, but I have confirmation from team managers that the rule stands at sign-2-play-1. Personally, I’ve never been a fan of a rule which means you are paying 2 players at an insane price for only 40 minutes of play where you can use that money to develop local players instead by just signing only one World Import. But no team is willing to be at a disadvantage by doing that so…
The main focus will be on the ASEAN Import rule which is back once again to entertain us Thai fans! The rule was an instant success last season with Avery Scharer (OSK), Patrick Cabahug (Raptors), Jeff Viernes (PEA), Lester Alvarez (TGE), Dominic Dar/Kevin Van Hook/AJ Mandani (Madgoat) who helped raise the level of their teams to make the league more competitive. The league still has a step-ladder format this season.

…but let’s take a step back and look at this from another angle.
Let’s look at the numbers.

Let’s look at how minutes were allocated in the previous two leagues: TBL 2016 and TBSL 2016-17.

Local minutes dropped by 20+% with only one roster spot given away to ASEAN Imports (on average). This was set by design. The league had made it clear that the purpose of the TBSL was for entertainment purposes and adding high level talents in form of ASEAN imports was supposed to do that. Local players were given a backseat in TBSL. By design, we were pretty much looking forward for more contribution from locals in the TBL.
…by the old import format, that would have been the case.
With the new format, this means that there will be 15 ASEAN Imports among 8 teams (if teams use all their quotas), which averages to 1.88 roster spots per team.
Let’s assume the trend that teams rely on ASEAN Imports from TBL to TBSL holds true. The Playing Time Rate of ASEAN Imports tripled along with how many roster spaces they averaged.
Since the World Import format goes back to Sign-2-Play-1, let’s assume the Playing Time Rate is the same as in TBL 2016.
Let’s take a look at a rough projection on what that does.

It’s a very crude and elementary projection, but it’s a concerning trend.
Instead of local players getting more time as the lead players, teams will be using those spots for more talented ASEAN Imports instead. We aren’t even going to dive into the financial part where the money used to hire ASEAN Imports could be used to develop and increase the pay for local players instead.
I’m not going to doubt that this will raise the level of play in the TBL and that the experience of practicing with ASEAN Imports does have it’s benefits. Still, Thailand doesn’t have a solid platform where locals get to display their talents on a consistent basis yet and taking even more minutes from them in the TBL will not be good for player development. Needless to say that I’m not a big fan of the import increase.
But hey, that’s just me.
I know that this article might come off as a bit negative. I know that there will be people willing to point at me and ask me why I just can’t enjoy good things that happen in life.
I love Thailand Basketball. I love that the TBL has been able to sustain through it’s 6th season already.
And it’s with that love that inspires me to raise my concerns. I might be wrong about everything but I want to be proven that I’m wrong. I don’t want to let it go without letting my voice being heard and having to think to myself later what I might have been able to do.
With all of that said, it’s a joy to see the Thailand Basketball League back again.

วันนี้ได้มีการแถลงข่าวสำหรับรายการ GSB ไทยแลนด์บาสเกตบอลลีก 2017 โดยจัดขึ้นที่สนาม Stadium29
สำหรับตัวผมเองนั้น ไม่สะดวกที่จะไปเข้าร่วมงาน ด้วยเหตุธุระจำเป็น แต่ด้วยพลังวิเศษแห่งเทคโนโลยีสมัยนี้ ผมจึงสามารถที่จะรวบรวมข้อมูลต่างๆ ที่เกิดขึ้นมาซอยละเอียดให้ได้รับรู้กันอีกที
- เรื่องเก่าเล่าใหม่
มาชี้แจงกันก่อนในรายละเอียดที่ยังคงเดิมของรายการ TBL ก่อนดีกว่า
เปิดมาด้วยเรื่องโอโฮอลังการหรูเริดก่อนเลยละกัน ปีนี้ เป็นครั้งแรกที่ ทีมเดิมทั้งหมดจากฤดูกาลก่อนหน้า กลับมาเข้าร่วมการแข่งขันหมดเลย!!! กล่าวคือ ปีที่แล้วมี 8 ทีมยังไง ก็ยังคงมีแปดทีมอย่างนั้น น่าปรบมือให้กับการจัดการตรงนี้จริงๆ ครับ ทำให้ลีกดูมีความต่อเนื่องมากขึ้น
ซึ่งก็นั่นแหละ ทีมที่เข้าร่วมมี โมโน แวมไพร์, ไฮเทค, แมดโกท, โอเอสเค อาร์แอร์ไลน์, ไทยเครื่องสนาม, โมโน ทิวไผ่งาม, สโมสรการไฟฟ้า, ดังกิน แรพเตอร์ส
การแข่งขันทุกนัดจะแข่งกันที่สนาม Stadium29 ซึ่งเป็นสนามจัดการแข่งขันบาสเกตบอลที่เรียกได้ว่า ดีที่สุดในประเทศ จึงไม่ใช่เรื่องน่าแปลกใจที่จะแห่มาจัดกันที่นี่เป็นปีที่สองติดต่อกัน
อาจจะยังมีความรู้สึกแปลกๆ อยู่บ้างที่ทุกทีมต้องมาแข่งกันที่สนามเจ้าบ้านของทีมๆ เดียว แต่ก็ปฏิเสธไม่ได้จริงๆ ว่ามันคือสนามที่ดีที่สุดในประเทศตอนนี้ จะใช้เป็นสถานที่จัดการแข่งขันก็ไม่ใช่เรื่องที่น่าตกใจ
ทุกทีมจะแข่งขันกันทุกสุดสัปดาห์ เสาร์-อาทิตย์ วันละเกม มาจนถึงจุดนี้แล้ว แต่ละทีม กับ ผู้เล่นแต่ละคนก็คงชินกับระบบนี้กันไปแล้ว แต่ส่วนตัวแล้วผมยังมีความเป็นห่วงกับผลของการที่เล่นสองเกมติดๆ กัน
การแข่งขันในระดับอาชีพสองเกมติดๆ กัน แน่นอนว่ามันมีผลกับร่างกายมาก เพราะฉะนั้น เราจึงเห็นหลายๆ ครั้งที่ลีกบาสจะพยายามหลีกเลี่ยงการจัดการแข่งขันติดต่อกัน แม้แต่ในการแข่งขันระดับ NBA เรายังเห็นการที่ผู้เล่นดังๆ ต้องถึงจัดการพักด้วยการไม่ลงแข่งเป็นบางเกมเลยด้วยซ้ำ
แต่ก็ด้วยข้อจำกัดเพื่อจัดตารางการแข่งขันให้ตรงกับช่วงเวลาในการจัดการถ่ายทอด ก็ต้องมีได้อย่างเสียอย่างตามๆ กันไป
แต่ละทีมจะเจอกันทีมละสองครั้ง เพื่อแย่งชิง 4 อันดับที่ดีที่สุด ที่จะไปแข่งขันกันต่อในรอบเพลย์ออฟ (ตรงนี้ ไม่ได้ชี้แจงมาในใบแถลงข่าว แต่ ถือว่าเป็นการอนุมานจากการแข่งขันในปีที่ผ่านมา) สำหรับในรอบเพลย์ออฟนั้น จะแข่งกันแบบ ชนะ 2 ใน 3 เกม (ซึ่งในใบแถลงข่าว ไม่ได้มีการแจ้งว่าจะใช้รูปแบบนี้จนถึงรอบชิงหรือไม่ แต่ในปีที่ผ่านๆ มา ก็ใช้แบบชนะ 2 ใน 3 เกมเช่นเดียวกัน)
นอกจากนี้แล้ว ในช่วงระหว่าง เลกแรก และ เลกสอง นั้น จะมีโอกาสให้แต่ละทีมทำการเปลี่ยนรายชื่อผู้เล่นได้ ในปีที่ผ่านมา กฎนี้ จะไม่เกี่ยวกับผู้เล่น ASEAN Import ที่เปลี่ยนตัวได้ตลอดทั้งฤดูกาล ซึ่งในจุดนี้ ไม่ได้มีการแจ้งรายละเอียดมาในแถลงข่าว
- กฏ Import เก่าเอามาปรุงแต่งสีสันให้สดใสซาบซ่านมากขึ้น
สิ่งหนึ่งที่ตัวผมรู้สึกอัศจรรย์ใจมาตลอดสำหรับ TBL คือ กฏผู้เล่นต่างชาติ ในช่วงยุคแรกๆ นั้น เคยมีการอนุญาตให้มีผู้เล่นต่างชาติลงสนามมากกว่า 1 คน (หากว่าจำไม่ผิด…) แล้วในช่วงถัดมา มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงเป็นกฏ “สองลงหนึ่ง” หรือ เซ็นตัว World Import มาสองคน แต่ลงสนามได้เพียงทีละ 1 คน ในปีที่ผ่านมา ได้มีการเพิ่มสีสันเข้าไปอีกโดยอ้างอิงจาก ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) ซึ่งมีโควตาให้ทีมอันดบที่ 4-5-6 จากฤดูกาลก่อนหน้านั้น รวมถึง ทีมหน้าใหม่ ได้สิทธิในการเซ็นตัวต่างชาติในภูมิภาค ASEAN (ASEAN Import) ทีมละคน
มาในปีนี้ ก็มีการปรับเปลี่ยนกฏให้สนุกครื้นเครงกันอีกครั้ง!! วูฮู!
สำหรับในใบแถลงข่าวที่ได้มานั้น ไม่มีการชี้แจงถึงกฏตัวต่างชาติ World Import แต่ทางผมมีการติดต่อกับผู้จัดการทีมบางท่านมาแล้วว่า ยังคงมีการใช้กฏ “สองลงหนึ่ง” เหมือนเดิม
โดยส่วนตัวแล้ว…ผมไม่เคยเห็นด้วยกันกฏนี้เท่าไหร่นัก เพราะว่า มันหมายความว่า ทีมๆ หนึ่งกำลังจ้างผู้เล่นสองคนด้วยราคาเต็มเม็ดเต็มหน่วย แต่ต้องกลับมาแบ่งเวลากันลงเล่นรวมกันได้ไม่เกิน 40 นาที
มาคิดดูอีกทีแล้ว แต่ละทีมอาจจะเอาเงินที่ไปลงทุนกับการจ้างผู้เล่นต่างชาติคนที่สอง มาใส่กับการพัฒนาผู้เล่นชาวไทยเพิ่มขึ้นได้อีก…แต่มันก็จะทำให้เสียเปรียบกับทีมอื่นที่เซ็นมาสองตัว…แล้วก็วนไปวนมาในลูบเช่นนี้เรื่อยๆ
จบกันเรื่องผู้เล่นต่างชาติ World Import เราก็ต้องมาชี้แจงเรื่องที่น่าตื่นตาตื่นใจที่สุดสำหรับ TBL 2017 นั่นก็คือ การกลับอีกครั้งของกฏผู้เล่น ASEAN Import แถมยังกลับมาแบบไฉไลกว่าเดิมด้วย!! ในการแข่งปีที่ผ่านมานั้น ถือว่าเป็นการประสบความสำเร็จอย่างมหาศาลกับ เอเวอร์รี่ ชาเรอร์ (OSK), แพทริก คาบาฮุก (แรพเตอร์ส), เจฟฟ์ วีแอร์เนซ (ไฟฟ้า), เลซเตอร์ อัลวาเรซ (ไทยเครื่องสนาม), โดมินิค ดาร์/เควิน แวน ฮุก/เอเจ มานดานี่ (แมดโกท) ซึ่งช่วยยกระดับความสามารถของแต่ละทีมในลีก และ ทำให้ระดับการแข่งขันสูสีกันมากขึ้น
ในปีนี้ ก็จะยังมีการแบ่งระดับของแต่ละทีม เพื่อไกล่เกลี่ยอีกเช่นเคย

มาดูกันหน่อยว่า ในรายการแข่งขัน สองรายการที่ผ่านมา เวลาการลงเล่นของผู้เล่นแบ่งกันอย่างไรบ้าง

จากสองรายการนี้ พบว่า เวลาในการลงเล่นของผู้เล่นคนไทยทั้งหมดนั้น ลดฮวบลงไปถึง 20%++ จากการเพิ่มสำแหน่งในทีมให้กับผู้เล่น ASEAN Import 1 คน (โดยเฉลี่ยทุกทีม)
ซึ่งตรงนี้ ก็เป็นไปตามเป้าหมายของการจัดการแข่งขัน TBSL อยู่แล้ว ซึ่งมีการแจ้งมาตั้งแต่แรกว่า เป็นรายการที่ต้องการจัดให้เป็นการแข่งขันระดับสูง จึงต้องมีการหว่านล้อมผู้เล่นระดับสูงๆ ตามมาอีกที ในรายการนั้น ก็มีการยอมรับกันโดยทั่วไปว่า ผู้เล่นไทยส่วนใหญ่ ก็มีการแบ่งเวลาการลงเล่นให้ผู้เล่นต่างชาติมากกว่าปกติ
แต่เพราะว่า เราได้เห็นการฟาดฟันกันในระดับสูงกับรายการ TBSL ไปแล้ว ตามปกติแล้ว แปลว่า รายการ TBL น่าจะมีการออกแบบให้ผู้เล่นคนไทย ลงเล่นกันมากกว่า ได้มีบทบาทมากขึ้น
…ซึ่งถ้าเป็นไปตามรูปแบบกฏเดิมก็คงเป็นแบบนั้น
สำหรับกฏใหม่นี้ ทำให้ทั้งลีก จะมีผู้เล่น ASEAN Import ทั้งหมด 15 คนจากทั้งหมด 8 ทีม ซึ่งเฉลี่ยแล้ว เป็น 1.88 คนต่อทีม
ถ้าเราอนุมานกันต่อว่า แต่ละทีม จะใช้ผู้เล่น ASEAN Import ในอัตราการเล่นเดียวกับ TBL/TBSL ที่ผ่านมา จะเป็นว่า อัตราการลงเล่นของผู้เล่น ASEAN Imports นั้นเพิ่มมากขึ้น 3 เท่า ประมาณๆ แล้วก็พอๆ กับ จำนวนผู้เล่น ASEAN Import ในแต่ละทีมโดยเฉลี่ย ที่เพิ่มขึ้นมา 3 เท่าเช่นเดียวกัน
ถ้าเราสมมติว่า อัตราการลงเล่นของ World Import จะคงที่กับใน TBL 2016 เรื่องด้วยกฏที่ไม่เปลี่ยนแปลง
เรามาลองดูกันว่า การลองคาดการณ์เวลาในการลงเล่นของผู้เล่นคนไทยจะเป็นอย่างไร

แน่นอนว่า มันเป็นการคาดการณ์ที่ทื่อ หยาบ และ ไม่ละเอียดเท่าที่ควรเอามาใช้ในการอ้างอิง แต่ก็ต้องยอมรับว่า มันทำให้เห็นภาพ และ แนวทางที่ค่อนข้างน่าเป็นห่วง
แทนที่ในรายการ TBL นี้ ผู้เล่นคนไทย จะได้มีบทบาทที่สูงขึ้น และ ได้ลงเล่นมากขึ้น แต่ละทีมกลับจะต้องให้เวลาในการลงเล่น และ ปรับบทบาท เพื่อให้กับ ผู้เล่น ASEAN Imports มากขึ้น
นี่ยังไม่เจาะไปกล่าวถึงเรื่องของเม็ดเงินในการจ้าง ASEAN Import ที่สามารถเอามาใช้ในการพัฒนาผู้เล่นชาวไทย หรือ ปรับอัตราการข้างผู้เล่นชาวไทยเพิ่มขึ้นอีก
ผมไม่ปฏิเสธ ว่า การมี ASEAN Import มากขึ้น จะยกระดับการแข่งขันให้สูงมากขึ้น อีกทั้งยังมีผลประโยชน์ที่ได้จากการร่วมซ้อมกับ ผู้เล่นเหล่านี้แน่นอน
เพียงแต่ผมรู้สึกว่า ประเทศไทย ยังไม่ค่อยมีเวทีที่มั่นคงที่ผู้เล่นชาวไทยจะได้ลงเล่นอย่างต่อเนื่อง ในบทบาทตัวชูโรงของทีมเท่าไหร่นัก และ ยิ่งไปลดบทบาท และ เวลาในการลงเล่นของแต่ละคนใน TBL อีก ก็ยิ่งเหมือนจะทำให้ชะลอในการพัฒนาลงไปอีก
พูดมาขนาดนี้แล้ว ก็ค่อนข้างชัดเจน ว่าผมไม่ค่อยเห็นด้วยกับกฏข้อนี้เท่าไหร่…แต่ก็อาจจะเป็นผมเพียงคนเดียวก็ได้ ที่คิดแบบนี้
ข้างต้นที่ผ่านมา ผมเข้าใจว่า อาจจะดูมีโทนการชี้แจงที่อาจจะมองว่า เป็นลบ อยู่มาก และ คาดได้ว่า คงมีหลายๆ คนที่พร้อมจะถามผมว่า ทำไมไม่รู้จักชื่นชม หรือ ดีใจกับสิ่งที่มันมีอยู่ตรงหน้าบ้าง
แต่เฮ้ย ผมรักบาสไทยว่ะ ผมรักที่ TBL มันมีการจัดกันต่อเนื่องมาจนถึงฤดูกาลที่ 6 ได้แล้ว
และด้วยความรักตรงนี้ ผมจึงได้ยกประเด็นที่น่าเป็นห่วงทั้งหลายข้างต้นขึ้นมา
แน่นอนว่า ผมอาจจะมองผิดทั้งหมดก็ได้ (เป็นไปได้สูงด้วย) แต่ผมอยากที่จะผิดแบบที่ได้แสดงความเห็นออกไปมากกว่า ผมไม่อยากให้เก็บไว้ในใจคนเดียว แล้วมาคิดทีหลังว่า เฮ้ย ถ้าวันนั้น เราได้แสดงความเห็นออกไปแล้วมันจะเป็นยังไงบ้าง
กล่าวมากันซะยาว ว่ากันตรงๆ ก็คือ ยินดีที่ได้เห็น ไทยแลนด์บาสเกตบอลลีก กลับมาอีกครั้งครับผม!!
ทั้ง 8 ทีมจะเริ่มทำการแข่งขันวันที่ 13 พฤษภาคมเป็นต้นไป โดยจะแข่งกันเพื่อแย่งชิงรางวัลกว่า 1.2 ล้านบาท โดยมี ธนาคารออมสิน เป็นผู้สนับสนุนหลักอย่างเป็นทางการ
