Defending a Championship in the ASEAN Basketball League is a difficult task. So difficult that no team in the past 6 seasons has been able to do so, despite trying their hardest. Can the Westports Malaysia Dragons do it this season?

The ASEAN Basketball League starts in a few days, so I think that it’s time that we started discussing in details about all of the teams now that each team has started filling in their Imports quotas.
The league will consist of six teams from 6 countries this year (Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, and the Philippines). Each team will play each other 4 times to make a 20 game season. The top 4 teams advance to the Playoffs where they will play best out of 3 series to determine the champion.
Two slots in the roster can be used on “World Imports”. World Imports can basically be any player from anywhere in the world. Teams usually use this quota on American Imports who play close to the basket.
Another two slots in the roster can be allocated to Heritage Imports. Heritage Imports are players who have:
- full Nationality of a country represented in the ABL or in the ASEAN region that isn’t the country that the player plays in
or
- Has acquired the Nationality of a country represented in the ABL or in the ASEAN region for less than 3 years but has one parent that has full Nationality of a country represented in the ABL or in the ASEAN region
For example, the Singapore Slingers (the team that resides in Singapore) could have signed me (a Full Thai citizen) to play on their team as a Heritage Import. However, they decided to sign All Austria, a Filipino-American whose Mother is fully Filipino. Take note that the league now has Hong Kong and Taiwan in the league, which means team can sign players of Hong Kongese or Taiwanese heritage as well. This means that an ABL team can indeed sign Jeremy Lin (who has Taiwanese heritage) to play for them … if they can convince him to do so.
Let’s start the preview with the defending champions, Westports Malaysia Dragons!
ABL Season 6 Recap
Season 6 was a historical season for the Dragons. They were the highest scoring team ever in ABL history with 90.9 points per game. It helped that they had one of the best point guards to ever play in the ABL in Heritage Import Jason Brickman who set record for most assists per game in a season (9.8), most assists in a game (21), and most assists in a season (265). That also set pace for last season’s Dragonforce to also log the most assists per game (19.9) in one season as well.
The best thing about that for the Dragons is that it all actually mattered in the end since they went on to win the ASEAN Basketball League title (unlike some team that had the best regular season record ever only to lose in the Finals after leading the series 3-*gets tackled*). It was one of the most closely contested and memorable ABL finals ever and capped off a memorable season for the Dragons.
Brickman wasn’t alone in the Dragon’s historic conquest. Fellow Heritage Import Matthew Wright had his own solo record breaking season setting the ABL single game (10) and single season (85) high for three pointers made. World Import Reggie Johnson was a monster all season and probably holds the league record the unofficial statistic of broken rim dunks. Calvin Godfrey has one of the most unstoppable stretches by a player I had ever seen towards the end of the season.
Round that all up with the solid production and three point shooting of the Malaysian players and it results in former Head Coach Ariel Vanguardia sobbing up in tears while celebrating the elusive ABL title after waiting for 5 years.

ABL Season 7 Insights
What a rebuild it’s going to be for them in this season though if they are truly going to make a run at the title again.
No ABL team has ever defended a title. Ever. Even teams with pretty decent roster continuity like the Indonesia Warriors (returned 60.2% of their minutes from Season 3 championship squad) or even Hitech Bangkok City (returned 73.3% of their minutes from Season 5 championship team) could seal the deal.
While the Dragons will be returning 6 players from last year’s squad, those players only played a combined 26.6% of the total minutes played last season. That leaves a lot of room to fill this year.
The biggest change of all is probably going to be the Head Coach position. Coach Ariel Vanguardia heads to the wonderland that is the PBA so the Dragons went out and got American Head Coach, Christopher Thomas.
Local star Kuek Tian Yuan mentioned that the teams has been used to Coach Vanguadia’s system for the past 4-5 years, so adjusting to Coach Thomas’ game plans will take time. It certainly will be a challenging task for Coach Thomas, but his experience with so many teams at high levels (NBA scout, Assistant Coach for the Slovenia National Team) should make the progress a bit smoother.
Thomas’ first recruit was Skylar Spencer, who is the younger World Import in the ABL this year. As a fresh grad out of San Diego State University, Spencer will anchor the paint for the Dragons this year. He will be partnered with Marcus Melvin, who Thomas was quick to snatch up after seeing him play in the Merlion Cup. Melvin isn’t young anymore at 34 already, but his style of play doesn’t require much youth to be effective.
Probably the most important recruit in the haul is Thai-American Heritage Import, Freddie Goldstein. The spitfire point guard was a crowd favorite for his Iverson-ish style of play, and he’ll look to continue his legacy here in Malaysia.
The Dragons are returning key contributors from the wing like Loh Shee Fai, Kuek Tian Yuan, Chee Khuen Ma, and Wong Yi Hou. All are expected to play in a lot more minutes than the past with the Dragons electing to sign only 3 imports this season. Ivan Yeo and Choo Wei Hong, had up and down rookies season and should get much more burn this year.
Rounding up the roster are rookies Chun Ting Hong, Teo Kok Hou, and Syahrul Ridzuan Bin Rosli. Keep an eye out for Teo Kok Hou who should slide into the backup point guard role as Chee Khuen moves to his more natural Shooting Guard position. Kok Hou played on the National Team in the 2016 SEABA Stankovic Cup and has been impressing in offseason runs.
Also make note that this is the first season ever that the Dragons will be playing their home games outside MABA Stadium (due to renovations to prepare for the 2017 SEA Games). They will be playing 2 games at Dewan Bola Keranjang In Melaka and another 2 games at the House of Champions in Cyber Jaya. MABA has hosted the most ABL games ever with a total of 66 games. The Dragons have won 45 games (68.1%) at MABA.
Westports Malaysia Dragons: Strengths
Youth
It would be easy to point at the Dragons’ average age of their current roster (24.6) and end this discussion here, but that doesn’t actually tell the whole tale. Not only do the Dragon’s have the youngest roster in the league, their projected major local contributors should still have plenty of miles left in their tank.
20-year-old Wong Yi Hou and 25-year-old Kuek Tian Yuan are primed for breakout seasons in a larger scoring role. 23-year-old Ivan Yeo and 22-year-old Kok Hou should also be logging plenty of minutes in their respected positions.
Couple with 22-year-old Skylar Spencer and it isn’t hard to imagine Coach Thomas pushing the pace once again for the Dragons with those fresh legs.
Long Bombs
The Dragons have finished in the top 3 of three point shots made in all prior 6 seasons, as well as leading the league in the category three times. They topped the league in three point percentage in 4 out of 6 seasons.
I know Vanguardia isn’t coaching the team anymore which means they won’t be playing the same game as they recently have in the past. However, the shooters are still their and I think a coach like Thomas wouldn’t neglect the strengths of the players he has.
Shee Fai is easily going to go down as one of the best shooters in ABL history with 117 made threes (all-time 5th) connecting on a ridiculous 39.7% of his long shots. Among players who have attempted 50 three point shots in their ABL careers, Shee Fai stands second only to Matthew Wright in the record books. Yi Hou is slowly headed in that direction. He shot 39.4% last year on 33 attempts and this year we’ll get to see if he can sustain that efficiency.
Adding in Freddie Goldstein can only assure us that the Dragons are going to be raining it from deep all day this season.
Westports Malaysia Dragons: Weaknesses
YOUTH
I think it’s a rule that when you mention a team’s youth as their strength, you also have to mention it as their weakness as well.
While it’s going to be fun watching the youngsters zip up and down the floor, fans will have to watch as they occasionally commit rookie mistakes from time to time. I still believe Kok Hou will be their go to back up guard, and despite all the faith I have in him, playing a point guard position in the ABL is not an easy job. Ivan Yeo, Choo Wei Hong, and Wong Yi Hou are still going to have to learn by making mistakes and there will be mistakes for sure. The veteran leadership of Kwaan Yoong Jing (who has unofficially decided to take a break) will most certainly be missed as well as his long frame.
Skylar Spencer himself will have to adjust into playing so far away from home for the first time in his life, a problem which former Dragons’ import Chris Eversley ran into as well during his first season two years ago.
Growing Pains
It takes time.
This could very well be the mantra of the Dragons this season. I understand the expectations of defending a title. but it’s going to be a process no matter how talented the individuals are.
Yes, I believe that Chris Thomas is going to be a great coach for the Dragons. However, no matter how good he is or will be, he’s only been with the team for 2 months.
I believe that the Dragons’ locals could be one of the best local cores. But to go from playing 10-ish minutes per game to 20+ minutes per game (as possible Kuek and Yi Hou are projected to play) will be quite a struggle early on.
Not to mention the three imports who will be playing for their first time with the team.
It will take time and for a 20-game ABL season, you don’t have much time to take.
Westports Malaysia Dragons: Player To Watch
My hipster pick is Teo Kok Hou, but even I think he’ll need more time before making significant impact.
A lot of eyes will be on Kuek and Shee Fai already so … everyone should take a good long look at Wong Yi Hou. Two years ago, he was just an 18-year-old kid that played garbage minutes for the Dragons. Last season, he emerged as the main local in the star-studded 4 import line up along with Kuek. Over the offseason, he’s been showing a lot of good movements and it’s quite intriguing to see how it’ll work in the ABL.
All aboard the Yi Hou bandwagon.
Westports Malaysia Dragons: Prediction
For fun, let’s look at what I wrote last year:
Their raw talent alone will probably propel them into the playoffs. Getting 15 wins again might be too much to ask for, but I don’t see them winning less than 10 games. A trip to the Finals is still in the picture, but it’s not given.
I’m going to predict a 12-win season for the Dragons.
The Dragons ended up with 16 wins and won the ABL title. I wasn’t too far off … but it was still a pretty significant miss.
I have a similar vibe about the Dragons this season. Getting 16 wins again might be too much to ask for, but I don’t see them winning less than 10 games with the line up they have and the players they are returning. A return to the Finals is not too far-fetched, but can’t write them in at this point.
You know what? I’m predicting a 12-win season again for the Dragons. I’m guessing Dragons fans won’t mind with how that turned out for them last year.

ไม่เคยมีทีม ABL ทีมไหนที่สามารถป้องกันแชมป์ได้ไว้ แม้ แต่ ทีม เดียว
ขนาดทีมที่คงตัวผู้เล่นจากทีมชุดแชมป์ปีก่อนไว้ยังไม่สามารถป้องกันแชมป์ได้เลย ทั้ง อินโดนีเซีย วอริเออร์ส (ที่ได้ผู้เล่นที่เล่น 60.2% ของเวลาที่เล่นทั้งหมดในฤดูกาลที่ได้แชมป์) หรือ แม้แต่ ไฮเทค (ที่ได้ผู้เล่นที่เล่น 73.3% ของเวลาที่ลงเล่นทั้งหมดในฤดูกาลที่ได้ปแชมป์)
ดรากอนส์มีผู้เล่นที่เล่นในทีมชุดที่แล้วถึง 6 คนก็จริง แต่ผู้เล่นเหล่านั้นกลับลงเล่นแค่เพียง 26.6% ในปีที่แล้ว จึงมีช่องว่างที่ต้องมานั่งอุดกันใหม่เต็มไปหมด
การเปลี่ยนครั้งใหญ่ที่สุด ก็คงไม่พ้นจากการเปลี่ยนแปลงในตำแหน่งเฮดโค้ชของทีม ทาง แอเรี่ยล แวนการ์เดีย ไปได้ดิยได้ดีในดินแดนสรวงสวรรค์ PBA ของเขา และ ทางดรากอนส์ก็เลยไปตกลงปลงใจกับ โค้ชชาวอเมริกา คริสโตเฟอร์ โธมัส
ดาวเด่นประจำทีมอย่าง เคว็ก เทียน ยวน ได้กล่าวไว้เหมือนกันว่า หลังจากที่เล่นในระบบของโค้ชแวนการ์เดียมาตลอด 4-5 ปี การที่จะปรับตัวเข้ากับระบบของโค้ชโธมัส คงต้องใช้เวลาไม่น้อย แน่นอนว่ามันต้องเป็นสิ่งที่ท้าทายอย่างมาก แต่บทบาทในอดีตของโค้ชโธมัส (ทั้งการเป็นแมวมองของ NBA และผู้ช่วยโค้ชทีมชาติสโลเวเนีย) น่าจะทำให้อะไรต่ออะไรง่ายมากขึ้น

ตัวหลักๆ จากวงนอกของ เคแอล ดรากอนส์ ก็ยังอยู่กันครบ ทั้ง โลห์ ชี ฟาย, เคว็ก เทียน ยวน, หม่า ชี เคว็น, และ หว่อง ยี เฮา คาดว่า ทุกคนน่าจะได้ลงเล่นมากกว่าที่ผ่านมามาก เพราะดรากอนส์ตัดสินใจที่จะใช้ตัวต่างชาติเพียง 3 คนเท่านั้น นอกจากนี้แล้ว เด็กสดหน้าใหม่จากปีที่แล้วอย่าง ไอแวน โย กับ ชู เวย์ ฮอง ก็น่าจะพร้อมมากขึ้น และ พร้อมจะทำผลงานได้ดีขึ้น
ที่เหลือในรายชื่อผู้เล่นตอนนี้ ก็จะเป็นรุกกี้ น้องใหม่ร้ายบริสุทธิ ทั้ง ชุน ติง ฮอง, เทโอ ก๊ก เฮา, และ สยารุลห์ ริดซวน บิน รอสลี คนที่น่าจับตามองที่สุดในสามคน คือ ก๊ก เฮา การ์ดจ่ายที่น่าจะเบียดเข้ามาเป็นการ์ดตัวสำรองได้ไม่ยาก เพราะ หม่า ชี เคว็กน่าจะสะดวกใจกับการย้ายไปเล่นตำแหน่งการ์ดทำแต้มมากกว่า ช่วงหลายเดือนที่ผ่านมานี้ ก๊ก เฮา เล่นกับทีมชาติมาเลเซียมาแล้ว อีกทั้งยังโชว์ฟอร์มจัดจ้านในรายการต่างๆ ที่เล่นในช่วงปิดฤดูกาล
สิ่งสุดท้ายที่อย่างบอกคือ ปีนี้ จะเป็นปีแรก ที่ เคแอล ดรากอนส์ จะมีเกมในบ้าน ที่ไม่ได้เล่นที่สนาม MABA Stadium ที่ปิดปรับปรุงเพื่อเตรียมใช้งานในรายการ SEA Games ซึ่งจะไปเล่น 2 เกมที่ Dewan Bola Keranjang ที่เมืองมะละกา และอีกสองเกมที่ House of Champions ที่เมือง Cyber Jaya
ในหกฤดูกาลที่ผ่านมา สนาม MABA เป็รสนามที่มีการแข่งมากที่สุด คือ แข่งมาแล้ว 66 เกม ซึ่ง ดรากอนส์ชนะทั้งหมด 45 เกมส์ หรือ 68.1% ของการแข่งทั้งหมด.

ความเยาว์วัย
ถ้าจะอธิบายง่ายๆ ก็คงจิ้มไปที่อายุเฉลี่ยของทีม (24.6 ปี) แล้วจบๆ กันไป แต่แค่นั้นมันยังเล่าเรื่องไม่ได้ความทั้งหมด นอกจากดรากอนส์จะมีทีมที่อายุน้อยที่สุดในลีกแล้ว ตัวหลักๆ แต่ละคนของทีมยังถือว่าอยู่ในช่วงพีกๆ ของความเป้นวัยรุ่น พลังเหลือเฟือแน่นอน
หว่อง ยี เฮา (20 ปี) กับ เคว็ก เทียน ยวน (25 ปี) ต่างก็น่าจะมีบทบาทในการทำคะแนนมากขึ้น แถม ไอแวน โย (23 ปี) กับ เทโอ ก๊ก เฮา (22 ปี) ก็น่าจะได้รับบทบาทที่สำคัญพอสมควรในตำแหน่งที่เล่น
ยิ่งมี สกายลาร์ สเปนเซอร์ (22 ปี) อีกคนหนึ่งแล้ว คิดว่า โค้ชโธมัส น่าจะสั่งเด็กพวกนี้วิ่งเท้าเป็นไฟแน่นอน

ใน 6 ฤดูกาลที่ผ่านมา ทีมดรากอนส์ ทำสถิติยิงสามแต้มลงมากที่สุดในซีซั่นมาแล้ว 3 ฤดูกาล อีกทั้งยังไม่เคยตกต่ำกว่าอันดับ 3 อีกด้วย ตลอด 6 ฤดูกาล ดรากอนส์มีอัตราการยิงสามแต้มที่ดีที่สุดในลีกทั้งหมด 4 ครั้ง
แน่นอนว่า การที่ โค้ชแวนการ์เดีย ไม่ได้คุมทีมนี้แล้วคงทำให้รูปแบบการเล่นต่างออกไปจากเดิม … แต่มือปืนทั้งหลายทั้งปวงก็ยังอยู่กับทีมนี้อยู่ดี และก็คิดว่า โค้ชที่ฉลาดอย่างโค้ช โธมัสไม่น่าจะปล่อยอาวุธชั้นดีแต่ละคนให้เสียของไป
ชี ฟาย นั้นแทบจะตีตั๋วเข้า Hall of Fame ของ ABL ได้ เป็นมือปืนที่ดีที่สุดในประวัติศาสตร์ของลีกคนหนึ่ง ด้วยการยิงสามแต้มลงทั้งหมด 117 ลูกมาแล้ว (อันดับที่ 5 ตลอดกาล) ซึ่งยิงลงด้วยประสิทธิภาพสูง มีอัตราการยิงลงถึง 39.7% อัตราการยิงลงขนาดนี้ ในบรรดาทุกคนที่ยิงอย่างน้อง 50 ลูกนั้น มีเพียงแมทธิวไรท์ที่ทำได้ดีกว่า หว่อง ยี เฮา เองก็ดูเหมือนว่ากำลังคลำเจอความแม่นยำเช่นเดียวกัน ปีที่ผ่านมา เขายิงลงถึง 39.4% จากการยิง 33 ครั้ง และมาปีนี้ ก็จะได้ดูว่า เขาจะรักษาความแม่นยำไว้ได้หรือไม่

ถ้าความเยาว์วัย คือ จุดเด่นของทีมๆ หนึ่ง มันย่อมเป็นจุดด้อยเช่นเดียวกัน
แน่นอนว่าการที่ได้เห็นพลังหนุ่มโลดแล่นวิ่งไปมากระโดดโลดโผน มันก็สนุดอยู่ หรือ แต่แน่นอนว่า ระหว่างนั้น มันย่อมมีความผิดพลาดแบบที่ไม่ควรผิดพลาดแซมอยู่ มากกว่าปกติ ถึงแม้ว่าผมจะเชื่อมั่นว่า ก๊ก เฮา จะเป็นการ์ดจ่ายที่ดีได้ การที่จะเล่นในตำแหน่งนี้ ในลีกนี้ มันไม่ใช่เรื่องง่ายเลย เลย
ทั้ง ไอแวน โย, ชู เวย์ ฮอง, และ ยี่ เฮา ต่างยังต้องมีการเรียนรู้จากการทำพลาดอีกมาก เพราะฉะนั้นต้องทำใจไว้ก่อนซะ ตรงนี้ ก็ทำให้แอบคิดถึงประสบการณ์ของกัปตัน ควาน ยูง จิง ที่ไม่มีรายชื่อในปีนี้ ซึ่งเท่าที่ได้ยินมา คือ ของไปพักร่างกายซักช่วงหนึ่ง
สเปนเซอร์ เองก็ต้องปรับตัวกับอะไรหลายๆ อย่าง ไม่ว่าจะทั้งวัฒนธรรม หรือ การที่ตัวต้องห่างจากบ้านมาไกล ซึ่งความคิดถึงบ้านนี้ เราก็เคยเห็นเป็นปัญหาเบาๆ มาแล้วกับ อิมพอร์ตคนเก่าของ ดรากอน์ คริส เอเวอร์สลี่ เมื่อสองปีที่แล้ว
ทุกอย่างมันต้องใช้เวลา
นี่อาจจะเป็นคำพูดติดปากของดรากอนส์ปีนี้ก็เป็นไปได้ แน่นอนว่า การที่คว้าปแชมป์มาได้ในปีที่ผ่านมา ทำให้ทุกๆ คนต้องมีความหวังกับทีมนี้มากระดับหนึ่ง แต่ยังไงซะ การสร้างทีมขึ้นมาใหม่ขนาดนี้ ก็ต้องใช้เวลา ไม่ว่าแต่ละบุคคลจะมากความสามารถขนาดไหน
ผมเชื่อนะ ว่า โค้ชโธมัส สามารถที่จะเป็นยอดโค้ชของดรากอนส์ได้ แต่อย้างไรก็ตาม เขาเพิ่มอยู่กับทีมได้ประมาณ 2 เดือนเท่านั้น
ผมเชื่อนะ ว่า ผู้เล่นโลคัล ของดรากอนส์ชุดนี้ อาจจะเป็นชุดที่ดีที่สุดชุดหนึ่ง แต่การที่ปรับตัวจากการเล่นเล่นเกมละ 10 นาทีเศษๆ มาเป็น 20 นาทีกว่าๆ ต่อเกม มันเป็นเรื่องปรับตัวหลายๆ อย่าง และ มันจะทำให้ออกสตาร์ทลำบากแน่ๆ
นี่ยังไม่รวมถึงตัวต่างชาติทั้งสามคนที่เพิ่งเล่นกับทีมเป็นครั้แรกอีก
กระบวนการนี้ มันต้องใช่เวลา…และในฤดูกาลที่แข่งขันกัน 20 เกม เวลาก็ไม่ได้มีมากซะด้วย
เวสพอร์ต มาเลเซีย ดรากอนส์: ผู้เล่นที่น่าจับตามอง
ถ้าจะเลือกแบบเอาเท่ ก็คงเลือก เทโอ ก๊ก เฮา แต่ถึงผมจะเชื่อมั่นขนาดไหนก็เชื่อว่าเขาจะยังไม่ได้ลงสนามมากพอที่จะสร้างผลงานที่น่าประทับใจได้หรอก
สำหรับ เคว็ก และ ชี ฟาย คงมีคนจับตามองเป็นพิเศษอยู่แล้ว เพราะฉะนั้น ผมจึงอยากให้ทุกคนมุ่งมาสนใจ หว่อง ยี เฮา กันซักหน่อย สองปีที่แล้วเขายังเป็นรุกกี้หน้าใสอายุ 18 ปี จนเมื่อปีที่แล้ว เขาได้ถูกดันเป็นตัวหลักของทีมและได้ลงเล่นกับเหล่าตัวผู้เล่นต่างชาติ อย่างสม่ำเสมอ ดูเหมือนว่าช่วงปิดฤดูกาลที่ผ่านมา เขาจะไปเพิ่มอาวุธมากมากพอสมควร
ใครเชียร์ ไม่รู้แหละ แต่ผมเชียร์คนนี้แน่นอน

มาดูกันฮาๆ กับการทายผลเมื่อปีที่แล้วกัน:
ความสามารถเพียวๆ ของ ทีมนี้ น่าจะดันให้เข้า รอบเพลย์ออฟได้ ถ้าจะให้ชนะได้ 15 เกมเหมือนเดิม อาจจะยากเกินไปหน่อย แต่ให้ชนะน้อยกว่า 10 เกมคงไม่มีทาง ความเป็นไปได้ที่จะเข้ารอบชิงยังมีอยู่ แต่มันไม่ได้ง่ายเท่าไหร่นัก
ผมว่า ดรากอนส์ ปีนี้ น่าจะชนะได้ซัก 12 เกม
ผลออกมา ดรากอนส์ เอาชนะไปได้ตั้ง 16 เกม แถมยังได้แชม์อีกด้วย ก็ถือว่า ไม่ได้พลาดมาก…แต่ก็ยังพลาดอยู่ดี
ปีนี้ ผมแอบรู้สึกอะไรคล้ายปีที่แล้ว ถ้าจะให้ชนะได้ 16 เกมเหมือนเดิม อาจจะยากเกินไปหน่อย แต่ให้ชนะน้อยกว่า 10 เกมคงไม่มีทางเป็นไปได้ ความเป็นไปได้ที่จะเข้ารอบชิงยังมีอยู่ แต่มันไม่ได้ง่ายเท่าไหร่นัก
เอางี้นะ ผมว่า ดรากอนส์ น่าจะเอาชนะได้ 12 เกม .. เอาวะ ลองดูสิ คราวที่แล้วผมทายว่าจะชนะ 12 เกมแล้วเป็นไงละ เชื่อฝีมือไหมละ
