After using Joel Wright for the past two major tournaments, the Westports Malaysia Dragons have decided to replace him with Marcus Melvin.

The KL Dragons won the ABL title last season with World Imports Reggie Johnson and Calvin Godfrey, but both won’t be returning to defend the throne. Calvin Godfrey has moved to play in Ukraine and we’ve already seen Reggie Johnson play for the Mono Vampires in their TBL Championship campaign, which is where he’ll stay committed to during the ABL season.
The Merlion Cup this past September was a chance for the Dragons to test out their candidates for the upcoming season. They chose to sign Joel Wright, who was fresh off a stint with Star Hotshots in the PBA.
Wright had an up and down campaign in the Merlion Cup, but the Dragons were still hopeful as they put Wright on their roster for the FIBA Asia Champions Cup. Wright played the first two games before asking to nurse an injury for the remaining two games.
Once the FIBA Asia Champions Cup concluded, news was released (via ChinaPress) that the Dragons had signed Marcus Melvin to replace Joel Wright.
The Dragons got to scout Marcus Melvin first-handed when he played for the Kinmen Kaoliang Liquor (Taiwan) in the Merlion Cup. The two teams played against each other in the placement game for 5th place and Melvin’s 25 points and 17 rebounds impressed new Coach Chris Thomas to go out and get him.
Marcus Melvin is a different type of import than from what the KL Dragons fans might have come accustomed to. During the past two ABL seasons the Dragons have signed Chris Eversley, Justin Knox, Calvin Godfrey, and Reggie Johnson. All of these world imports played for the Dragons before they turned 26 and having only a couple of professional basketball seasons on their resumes. Melvin on the other hand is a 34-year-old bruising forward who has played in Argentina, Puerto Rico, Turkey, Italy, the Philippines, Romania, and Venezuela. He might not be as physically imposing or will be on fresh young legs, but his veteran leadership and experience should be perfect for a Dragons team that is reportedly looking to maximize the potential of their locals.
Melvin played for the NC State Wolfpack during his college days from 2000-2004. He was a solid stretch 4 who scored 10.7 points, grabbed 5.7 rebounds, and shot 37.8% from beyond the three-point line. At NC State, Melvin also played with ex-Saigon Heat import, Julius Hodge, and ex-PEA/Madgoats import, Jordan Collins.
The Dragons frontcourt will be shored by Melvin and Skylar Spencer, a 22-year-old rookie out of San Diego State who played with the Dragons in the FIBA Asia Champions Cup.
We’ll get to see more of Marcus Melvin, Skylar Spencer, and the Dragons when the ABL season kicks off late November!
