ASEAN University Games 2016: Basketball

The ASEAN University games is a sporting event competed among university students throughout the ASEAN region representing their countries. One of those events are basketball. Thailand is in the ASEAN region.

That’s enough for me to consider at least some interest in this event.

The ASEAN University Games doesn’t hold much impact on the basketball scene as a whole. Your world rankings are effected by it. It isn’t a qualifier for any other tournament. It’s just…there.

This year’s version is held in Singapore. The event has barely gotten any recognition from the Thai sports media, even now that the Thai national team has played one game already (114-49 win over Laos), save for a few outlets like BasSociety. Even I overlooked this event for a long while.

But because basketball never stops…let’s dive in a little bit on why this event is actually quite interesting.

Basics of ASEAN University Games 2016 Men’s Basketball

Of the 10 nations in the ASEAN Region, 5 sent teams to participate in Men’s Basketball: Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Laos. Five nations also sent teams to represent in Women’s Basketball which are Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Philippines.

Right off the bat, it is interesting that a basketball crazed nation like the Philippines, have decided not to join. Of course, with the NCAA having already started and UAAP teams being able to get better competition tuning up against PBA teams, the Philippines might have seen it a bit pointless in sending a team here. So…moving on:

All 5 teams are to play a round-robin elimination round. The first and second place teams will play for the Gold Medal while the third and fourth place team play for Bronze. No playoffs. Just don’t screw up in the elimination round.

Note: I will not be covering Women’s Basketball purely because I have no idea whatsoever about the players on any team and I don’t want to be that guy who keeps on talking about something he doesn’t know.

ASEAN University Games 2016 Men’s Basketball: Laos

I’ll admit it straight up: I know nothing about this Laos National Team at all. I wish I did. But I don’t. If any Laos basketball fans would like to add up on who’s who and what’s what, feel free to share and comment.

ASEAN UNIVERSITY GAMES 2016 MEN’S BASKETBALL: Malaysia

There’s a couple of familiar faces here on the Malaysian squad. The two guys in the middle of the top row are Ivan Yeo (KL Dragons/SEA Games 2015/SEABA Stankovic Cup 2016) and another guy whose jersey read “Mei Mei” on the Malaysia Dragons squad in the Penang Tournament.

Again, my knowledge of this team is limited to those few tidbits.

I could make out Russel Low (Singapore Slingers/SEA Games 2015) and Shengyu Lim (Singapore Slingers/SEABA Stankovic Cup 2016), but that was pretty much it.

With that said, Russel Low and Shengyu Lim could a good duo…depending on how the rest of the team supports them. And I can’t recognize any of the other players. So…

ASEAN UNIVERSITY GAMES 2016 MEN’S BASKETBALL: INDONESIA

Indoensia ain’t playing around ya’ll. Here’s the roster:

The names you see in parenthesis are the Indonesia Basketball League team names that each player is associated with. All, I repeat, all of these players are already playing in the professional level. And this is not like the “professional level” team that Indonesia sent to the SEABA Stankovic Cup either. Each of these players are main role players on their teams, mostly playing at least 15 minutes per game.

Immediate standouts are Andakara Prastawa and Adhi Pratama, both of whom were on the Indonesia SEA Games silver medal squad in 2015. Prastawa is a jitterbug point guard who has been crowned Rookie of the Year and Sixth Man of the year (twice) in the domestic leagues. Adhi Pratama is the exact opposite of Praswata, as he is a giant of a center, but he himself was named MVP of the Indonesian domestic league only a year ago.

While those will probably be the two stars, the rest of the squad are certainly no pushovers. Kevin Yonas has played in the ABL as well as Mei Joni. The rest are key scorers for their teams.

Indonesia stands out so much talentwise that it’s a shame the organizers only have live feeds of the games only for the championship game. Which if everything goes according to predictions, Indonesia should be there playing for the gold alongside…

ASEAN UNIVERSITY GAMES 2016 MEN’S BASKETBALL: Thailand

This team could go all the way.

I’m a homer. What the hell were you guys expecting?

I’m a Thai writing a blog about Thailand Basketball. Of course, I would expect the Thai National Team to at least get to the Championship round. But it’s all with good reasoning though. Here’s the roster:

Similar to Indonesia, Thailand’s players are all listed on their respective clubs rosters. However, only a handful play major minutes for their teams right now. Players who have been exposed in major international tournaments will be Chantachon (SEA Games 2015 & SEABA Stankovic Cup 2016) and Patipan Klahan (SEABA Stankovic Cup 2016).

Chantachon has averaging 9.5 points and 5.3 rebounds for the 3rd placed Mono Vampires. Klahan just moved to Hitech and scored 16 points with 5 rebounds in his debut.

Another players to look out for is Anucha Langsui (10.8 points/4.9 rebounds) who has been tearing it up for new team OSK and looks like a big piece of the future for both his club and his nation.

ASEAN UNIVERSITY GAMES 2016 MEN’S BASKETBALL: Bold Prediction

You might have already guessed by the tone that I set up in the previews. Yes, I am predicting an Indonesia vs Thailand finals for the Gold Medal.

The question is: Who wins that game?

We’ll be getting to see a preview of that when the two teams play on July 13th at 3:00 PM (GMT +8). Here’s the thing, Indonesia has one thing that Thailand doesn’t have. Adhi Pratama is a true center with size…he should either have height or width advantage over anyone that Thailand throws at him.

However, Thailand has a bevy of long forwards who can do a little bit of everything. That should be a handful for the Indonesian wings.

If I’m going to go bold, I’ll choose Thailand to take the gold medal because of the wings of terror Klahan/Langsui.

And also because I am completely biased.

การแข่งขันกีฬามหาวิทยาลัย ASEAN เป็นการแข่งขันกีฬาระหว่างนักศึกษาในภูมิภาค ASEAN แต่ละประเทศ ซึ่งในรายการกีฬาทั้งหมดนี้ มีบาสเกตบอลด้วย
ไทยก็เป็นหนึ่งในชาติที่ส่งแข่งขันรายการ บาสเกตบอลชาย ด้วย

แค่สองสิ่งนี้ ก็มากเพียงพอแล้วแหละ ที่ผมจะเพ่งความสนใจไปที่นี้บ้าง

ปีนี้ จะทำการแข่งขันที่ประเทศ สิงคโปร์ การแข่งขันกีฬามหาวิทยาลัย ASEAN นั้น จริงๆ ก็ไม่ได้ส่งผลกระทบอะไรกับวงการบาสในวงกว้างมากเท่าไหร่หรอก ผลการแข่งไม่ได้ส่งผลต่อการจัดอันดับ FIBA และ ก็ไม่ได้เป็นการแข่งขันที่คัดเลือกเพื่อแข่งในรายการอื่นแต่อย่างใด
มันก็…แค่มีตัวตนของมันอยู่ตรงนี้นี่แหละ

รายการแข่งขันนี้ ยังไม่ค่อยได้รับความสนใจจากสื่อกีฬาในไทยเท่าไหร่นัก แม้ว่า ทีมชาติไทย จะเอาชนะทีมชาติ ลาวไปได้ในเกมแรกแล้ว 114-49 จะมีก็แต่เพจบาสไทยอย่าง BasSociety ที่มีการลงข่าวมาอย่างต่อเนื่อง
แย่างว่างั้นงี้เลย แม้แต่ผมเองก็เหมือนจะละเลยไปเหมือนกัน

เรามาดูกันในแต่ละทีมดีกว่า แล้วจะเริ่มเข้าใจว่า ทำไมผมอยากมาสนใจการแข่งขันบาสรายการนี้

พื้นฐานความเข้าใจคร่าวๆ ของ การแข่งขันบาสเกตบอลชาย ในรายการกีฬามหาวิทยาลัย ASEAN 2016

จากประเทศ 10 ประเทศในภูมิภาคนี้ มีเพียง 5 ประเทศที่ส่งทีมแข่งในรายการ บาสเกตบอลชาย คือ สิงคโปร์ อินโดนีเซีย ไทย มาเลเซีย และ ลาว ทางด้าน บาสเกตบอลหญิง ก็ส่งมา 5 ทีมเช่นเดียวกัน คือ สิงคโปร์ อินโดนีเซีย ไทย มาเลเซีย และ ฟิลิปปินส์

สิ่งที่น่าตื่นตาขึ้นมาทันที คือ การที่ ทีมชาติฟิลิปปินส์ ไม่ส่งทีมเข้าร่วมในรายการบาสเกตบอลชายครั้งนี้ ทั้งที่เป็นประเทศที่บ้าคลั่งกีฬานี้เอามากๆ
ก็อาจจะเข้าใจได้บ้างว่า ลีก NCAA ที่ประเทศฟิลิปปินส์ เพิ่งเริ่มต้นขึ้น อีกทั้งลีก UAAP ก็มีโอกาสอุ่นเครื่องกับทีมในระดับ PBA…ซึ่ง ระดับการแข่งขันและความท้าทาย คงต่างกัน

ทั้ง 5 ทีมจะเล่นแบบพบกันหมดในรอบแรก และทีมอันดับที่ 1 และ 2 จะเข้าไปชิงเหรียญทอง ส่วนที่ 3 และที่ 4 จะชิงเหรียญทองแดง ไม่มีรอบเพลย์ออฟใดๆ ทั้งนั้น อย่าพลาดรอบคัดเลือกก็พอ

ยอมรับกันตรงๆ ว่า ผมไม่รู้ ห่าเหว อะไรเลยเกี่ยวกับทีมชาติลาวชุดนี้ บางทีก็คิดนะ ว่าควรจะรู้ไว้บ้าง…แต่ไม่รู้จริงๆ ถ้าแฟนบาสลาวคนไหน อยากเสริม อยากบอกว่าใครเป็นใคร ก็คอมเมนต์บอกได้เลยนะครับ

ในชุดนี้ ก็มีคนที่หน้าคุ้นอยู่เพียง 2 คนจริงๆ ซึ่งคือ สองคนแถวบนตรงกลาง ซึ่งก็มี ไอแวน โย (เคแอล ดรากอนส์/SEABA Stankovic Cup 2016) และ ก็มีไอ้หนุ่มผมหยิกที่มีชื่อติดหลังว่า “เมย์ เมย์” ในทีม มาเลเซีย ดรากอนส์ ในรายการแข่งขันที่ ปีนังเมื่อไม่นานมานี้

ก็อีกนั่นแหละ ไม่รู้จักคนอื่นมากมายเท่าไหร่นัก

ชื่อที่เห็นในวงเล็บนั้นคือ ชื่อทีมที่แต่ละคนสังกัดใน Indonesia Basketball League ซึ่งนั่นแปลว่า ผู้เล่นทุกคนในชุดนี้ นั้น เล่นในระดับ อาชีพของอินโดนีเซียแล้ว และ นี่ไม่ใช่ระดับเดียวกับที่ส่งแข่ง SEABA Stankovic Cup นะ แต่ละคนก็ถือว่าเป็นผู้เล่นหลักของแต่ละทีม โดยลงเล่นประมาณ 15 นาทีต่อเกม

คนที่โดดเด่นออกมาเหนือกว่าเพื่อน คือ สองคู่หู อานดาคารา ปราสตาวา และ อาห์ดี ปราตามา ซึ่งทั้งสองก็เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของทีมชาติอินโดนีเซีย ที่คว้าเหรียญเงินได้ที่ SEA Games 2015 ที่สิงคโปร์
ปราสตาวา นั้นเป็นการ์ดตัวจี๊ด ที่ได้ทั้งรางวัล Rookie of the Year และ Sixth Man of the Year (สองสมัย!!) มาจากลีกภายในประเทศมาแล้วด้วย
ส่วน อาห์ดี ปราตามา นั้นแทบจะตรงข้ามกันเลย เพราะว่า เขาเป็นเซนเตอร์ร่างยักษ์ และยังเคยเป็น ผู้เล่นทรงคุณค่า ของลีกอีก

ในขณะที่สองคนนี้ เป็นผู้เล่นสตาร์ของทีมแน่นอน ใช่ว่า ผู้เล่นที่เหลือจะกระจอกงอกง่อยซะทีเดียว เควิน โยนาส กับ เมย์ โจนี่ ต่างก็เคยวาดลวดลายในสนาม ABL มาแล้ว และที่เหลือก็เป็นตัวทำแต้มหลักๆ ของทีม

ระดับความสามารถของผู้เล่นทีมชาติอินโดนีเซียนั้นถือว่ามีระดับค่อนข้างสูง จึงน่าเสียดาย ที่ทางผู้จัดสามารถจัด Live feed ให้ได้แค่เพียงรอบชิงเท่านั้น ถ้าทุกอย่างเป็นไปตามที่คาดการณ์ไว้ เกมรอบชิงเกมนั้น ก็น่าจะเป็นระหว่าง อินโดนีเซีย และ…

ผมว่า ทีมนี้ ไปจนสุดทางได้แน่ๆ

แต่ก็แน่ละ ผมอาจจะมีลำเอียงอยู่บ้าง ก็ผมคนไทยนิ

รายชื่อผู้เล่นไทย ก็ถือว่าจัดจ้านไม่แพ้ อินโดนีเซียเลย เพราะว่าเป็นผู้เล่นที่มีสังกัดในทีมระดับสโมสรเมหือนกัน แต่ก็จะมีผู้เล่นเพียงหยิบมือเท่านั้น ที่ลงเล่นอย่างต่อเนื่องจริงๆ ผู้เล่นที่มีประสบการณ์ในระดับนานาชาติ ก็จะมี “บิ๊ก” ธีรวัฒน์ (SEA Games 2015 & SEABA Stankovic Cup 2016) และ ปฏิภาณ กล้าหาญ (SEABA Stankovic Cup 2016).

ธีรวัฒน์ตอนนี้ กำลังเล่นให้กับทีม โมโน แวมไพร์ (อันดับ 3 ใน TBL) และทำเฉลี่ย 9.5 แต้ม และ 5.3 รีบาวด์ ส่วน ปฏิภาณ เพิ่งย้ายไป ไฮเทค (ทีมอันดับ 1) และทำไป 16 แต้มกับ 5 รีบาวด์ในเกมเปิดตัว

ผู้เล่นที่น่าจับตามองอีกคนคือ “ตุ้ม” อนุชา ลังสุ่ย ที่กำลังมาแรงกับฟอร์มที่ OSK ด้วยการทำแต้ม 10.8 แต้มต่อเกม แถมอีก 4.8 รีบาวด์ต่อเกม ซึ่งน่าจะปั้นเป็นตัวหลักของทีม และ ของชาติได้ต่อไปในอนาคต

ASEAN UNIVERSITY GAMES 2016 MEN’S BASKETBALL: ฟันธง

ถ้าอ่านมาเรื่อยๆ ก็คงเดาได้ไม่ยากแหละ ว่าจะฟันธงว่าอย่างไรบ้าง

ผมคาดการณ์ไว้เลยว่า อินโดนีเซีย กับ ไทย จะเป็นคู่ชิงในรายการนี้

แต่คำถามที่สำคัญกว่าคือ แล้วใครจะเป็นผู้ชนะละ?

เราจะได้รู้ผลคร่าวๆ ของคู้ชิงในจินตนาการคู่นี้ เวลา 14.00 น. (เวลาไทย) ในวันที่ 13 กรกฎาคม ซึ่งจะเป็นการเจอกันของทั้งสองทีมในรอบแรกของการแข่งขัน
สิ่งที่น่าสนใจคือ อินโดนีเซีย มีสิ่งที่ ไทยไม่มี คือ เซนเตอร์แท้ตัวโตๆ ที่จะมาวัดกับ อาห์ดี ปราตามา
แต่ในทางกลับกัน เหล่าปีกยาวเฟื้อยของไทย ก็น่าจะสร้างความน่ารำคาญให้กับแนวรับของอินโดนีเซียค่อนข้างมาก

ถ้าจะให้ฟังธงจริงๆ ก็คงฟันว่า ไทยจะชนะครับ เพราะว่า คู่ปีกอย่าง ปฏิภาณ/อนุชา น่าจะรับมือไม่ไหวจริงๆ
