Here’s the final roster for the Men’s Thailand National Team that will be participating in the SEABA Championship U-18, held at Medan, Indonesia during 23-28 April 2016.

Most of the Thai fans will have probably seen the roster by now, but since I just got the message…I’ll post it again.
The released roster is according to the leaks that went around last night and since there were various reactions to the announcement, I’d like to put in my two cents.
Obviously, the National Team roster was selected from a wide range of talented candidates. Because only 12 could be selected, there would be many who would have to be left disappointed.
The feedback of the announcement varied from “Why does this school have so many players on the roster?” or “Why aren’t there any players from other provinces?” and the most common “Is their favoritism involved in the selection process?”
I’ve never seen any of these kids play in person, so take my words with a grain of salt. However, while I feel sorry for the talented kids that didn’t get the “opportunity” to make the squad, I also pity the kids that have now been unfairly pegged as making the roster only because they are “favorites”.
From a fair point of perspective, the roster is selected by the Head Coach, who has evaluated that these are the 12 guys that he will be able to use efficiently to win.
We cannot forget that the “National Team” is not purely an assembly of the Nation’s top talent, but it is a collection of the Nation’s top talent THAT CAN WORK MOST EFFICIENTLY under the leader of the team or the Head Coach.
The Head Coach for this squad is Coach Sopon Pinijpatcharalert, who is also coaching at Assumption College Thonburi school. Therefore, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that we see one third of the players coming from a program that he has overlooked for the a majority of his time. Other than that, 4 of the 12 are also from the U-16 squad, which Coach Sopon also coached.
Is it favoritism? Of course it is. But it’s the same favoritism that we saw with Team USA when “Coach K” Mike Krzyzewski called up Mason Plumlee to the team, a player who he coached at Duke University.
If we have instilled our trust in a certain person, a certain coach, to lead our troops…I guess it is only fair to trust in the selection of his troops.
I hope that everyone understands the purpose of this post. I believe that everyone that was selected deserved to be shoulder the responsibility of representing the nation and it is only proper to congratulate them for that. But I also believe that there are plenty of more players with talent that are worthy of being selected that didn’t make the cut as well. For the those who missed out, I just want to encourage them to not give up, keep on working, and eventually the chance will come.
The SEABA Championship U18 for the Thailand National Team will start on the 23rd of April at 5.30PM. I’ll keep on updating on the situation as we go.
The Thailand National U-18 team has the following schedule for this tournament
23 April 5.00 PM vs Philippines
24 April 8.00 PM vs Malaysia
25 April 8.00 PM vs Indonesia
26 April 4.00 PM vs Laos
27 April 6.00 PM vs Singapore
After the elimination rounds, the seeding for 1st to 4th place will be held on the 28th which will have quite significance due to the fact that the top 3 teams will advance to play in the FIBA Asia U-18 tournament. That competition will be played in Iran during 15-24 July.
From the past 9 SEABA Championship U-18 tournaments, Thailand has secured second place twice and thrid place thrice.
PS. Of course, if we were able to implement a system with a neutral coach and a continuous program, it would mean that we would be able to scrap the same old selection process as well. But that’s for some other argument later on.

อาจจะเห็นการประกาศกันไปแล้ว ทางผมเพิ่งได้รับข่าวมาช้านิดหน่อย แต่ก็ เอาไปดูอีกรอบละกันนะครับ 555
ก็เป็นไปตามที่มีการโพสกันว่อนเมื่อคืน ว่าจะมีนักกีฬาจากแต่ละโรงเรียนตามที่คาดการณ์ไว้ และเนื่องจากมีกระแสตอบรับมาหลายแนวทาง ผมก็จะลองวิเคราะห์สถานการณ์อย่างเบาๆ ละกัน
แน่นอนว่า นักกีฬาที่คัดตัวทีมชาติชุดนี้ก็มีไม่น้อย และแน่นอนว่า แต่ละคนก็ต้องมากฝีมือแน่ๆ แต่เพราะคัดเลือกได้เพียง 12 คน…ก็ต้องมีคนที่ผิดหวัง เป็นธรรมดา
มีหลายๆ กระแส ที่ออกมาวิพากษ์วิจารณ์ ว่า ทำไมเด็กจากโรงเรียนนี้ มีจำนวนมาก? ทำไมเด็กจากจังหวัดอื่นๆ ถึงมีน้อย? และบางคนถึงขั้นส่ายหัวว่า ระบบคัดเลือกทีมชาติ มันต้องพึ่งพา “เส้น” เท่านั้น
ผมไม่เคยเห็นเด็กพวกนี้เล่นจริงๆ ผมก็คงพูดอะไรมากไม่ได้ แต่…ใจหนึ่ง ก็สงสารเด็กที่ไม่ติดจริงๆ คนที่อาจจะมีฝีมือมาก แต่ไม่มี “โอกาส” ที่จะได้แสดงตัวให้ถูกคัดเลือกได้ แต่อีกใจหนึ่ง ก็สงสารเด็กที่ติดทีมไป แล้วถูกตราประทับไว้ว่า ติดเพราะ “เส้น” เหมือนกัน
มองกันอย่าง ยุติธรรมว่า เด็กที่ถูกคัดเลือกไป คือเด็กที่ ผู้ฝึกสอนของทีม ได้คัดมา เพราะมองไว้แล้วว่า จะสามารถ “ใช้งาน” แต่ละคนได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพขนาดไหน
เราต้องไม่ลืมว่า “ทีมชาติ” ก็เหมือนกับการรวมพลกองทัพ มันไม่ใช่เพียงแค่ที่รวมยอดฝีมือ…หากแต่มันต้องรวมยอดฝีมือ ที่สามารถทำงานร่วมกันได้ ภายใต้บัญชาการของ “จอมพล” หรือ ผู้ฝึกสอน นั่นเอง
ซึ่ง ผู้ฝึกสอนชุดนี้ ก็คือ โค้ชโสภณ พินิจพัชรเลิศ ซึ่งเป็นผู้ฝึกสอนทีมโรงเรียน อัสสัมชัญธนบุรี จึงอาจจะไม่ใช่เรื่องแปลก ที่เห็น โค้ชโส คัดเลือกผู้เล่นที่เขาคุ้นเคย จากโรงเรียนที่เค้าฝึกสอนมาตลอด 4 คน นอกจากนี้ ใน 12 คนนี้ ยังมีคนที่เล่นภายใต้การควบคุมของ โค้ชโส อีก 4 คนจากทีมชุด U-16 อีกด้วย และต่างคนก็คงแสดงฝีไม้ลายมือที่จัดจ้านพอ ที่โค้ชโส จะวางใจเรียกตัวขึ้นมาอีกรอบ
มันคือการ “เส้น” หรือไม่? มันก็ใช่แหละครับ…แต่มันก็คือการ “เส้น” ในรูปแบบเดียวกับทีมชาติ อเมริกา ที่ “โค้ชเค” ไมเคิล เชเชสกี้ เรียกตัว เมสัน พลัมลี ไปในชุดก่อน ซึ่งเป็นคนที่เล่นภายใต้ โค้ชเค ที่มหาวิทยาลัย ดุ๊ค มาตลอด
ในเมื่อเราไว้ใจ ให้คนๆ หนึ่ง เป็น “จอมพล” ในการนำ “กองทัพ” ของเรา ผมว่า พวกเราก็ควรจะไว้ใจ ในการเลือก “กองทัพ” ของเขาเช่นกัน
ตรงนี้ ก็หวังว่าทุกคนจะเข้าใจจุดประสงค์ของบทความสั้นๆ ที่ผมเขียนไว้นะครับ ผมเชื่อมั่น ว่า คนที่ถูกคัดเลือกไป มีฝีมือที่เหมาะสมที่จะแบกธงชาติไว้ที่อกเหมือนกันหมด ก็ต้องแสดงความยินดีกับเด็กๆ เหล่านี้ และหวังว่า พวกเขาจะประสบความสำเร็จ ส่วนคนที่ไม่ได้ถูกคัดเลือก ผมว่าอีกหลายๆ คนก็มีความสามารถที่สมควรจะติดเช่นกัน แต่ผมอยากจะฝากบอกว่า ไม่ต้องเสียใจ โอกาสเรายังมี ตั้งใจฝึกซ้อมให้เก่งขึ้น และเดี๋ยวคนก็จะเห็นเองแหละครับ
อย่าลืม!!! การแข่งขัน SEABA Championship U18 จะเริ่มทำการแข่งขันในวันที่ 23 โดย ทีมชาติไทย จะแข่งเวลา 17.30 น. เป็นเกมแรก!! แล้วทางผมจะเอาข่าวสารมาให้ติดตามเรื่อยๆ นะครับ
สำหรับตารางการแข่งขันของทีมชาติไทย จะมีในวันที่
23 เมษายน เวลา 17.30 น. เจอกับ ทีมชาติฟิลิปปินส์
24 เมษายน เวลา 20.00 น. เจอกับ ทีมชาติ มาเลเซีย
25 เมษายน เวลา 20.00 น. เจอกับ ทีมชาติอินโดนีเซีย
26 เมษายน เวลา 16.00 น. เจอกับ ทีมชาติลาว
27 เมษายน เวลา 18.00 น. เจอกับ ทีมชาติสิงคโปร์
หลังกจากนั้น วันที่ 28 จะเป็นการแข่งขันเพื่อวางอันดับที่ 1-4 ที่มีนัยยะสำคัญ เพราะ จากการแข่งขันนี้ ทีมที่ได้อันดับที่ 1-3 จะได้แข่งต่อในการแข่งขัน FIBA Asia U-18 ที่ประเทศอิหร่าน ในช่วงวันที่ 15 กรกฎาคม – 24 กรกฎาคม
สำหรับการแข่งขัน SEABA Championship U-18 เก้าครั้งที่ผ่านมา ไทยได้เหรียญเงินมาแล้ว 2 ครั้ง และ ทองแดง 3 ครั้ง
ปล. แน่นอนว่า ถ้าหากระบบการบริหารจัดการโครงการของทีมชาติไทย โดยรวม พัฒนาขึ้นได้ ให้สามารถมีโค้ชกลาง และมีโปรแกรมทีมชาติต่อเนื่อง ที่ทำให้ไม่ต้องพึ่งพาความคุ้นเคยในการคัดเลือกตัวในรูปแบบเดิมๆ…ผมว่า ตรงนั้น น่าจะเป็นทางออกที่ดีที่สุด
